This document summarizes a presentation given at the International Rights of Nature conference in Paris in 2015. It discusses the environmental and human impacts of Shell's oil extraction operations in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, which has experienced widespread oil pollution, gas flaring, and violence between oil companies and local communities. The presentation argues that [1] the Niger Delta represents a crime scene of ecocide due to the extensive pollution and health impacts of oil spills and gas flaring, and [2] there are conflicts between how developed and developing countries view energy security, with developing countries experiencing dispossession and human rights violations at extraction sites. It calls for energy democracy, transitioning from fossil fuels, and compensation for communities from the UN Green Climate
