BP Middle East inaugurated its new regional headquarters in Dubai under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. BP has been present in the Middle East for over 100 years and its regional HQ is responsible for sales in over 20 countries, employing 176 staff in Dubai. Qatar accounted for 45% of outbound M&A activity from the Middle East in the first 9 months of 2014, while UAE and Saudi Arabia accounted for 25% and 22% respectively. The oil and gas sector plays a key role in Oman's economy, accounting for about half of GDP, and will need to help address challenges of creating value, supporting SMEs, and fostering innovation and human resources
Qatar is expected to lead GCC economic growth in 2014 at 6% due to large infrastructure projects and domestic consumption. The IMF forecasts overall GCC growth of 4.4% in 2014 as governments increase spending on sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure to diversify economies and reduce reliance on oil. Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are expected to see the highest growth rates while Kuwait's growth will lag at 2.6% due to its oil reliance. Economic growth in the GCC will remain tied to oil prices and supply dynamics.
The document summarizes discussions from the 4th GCC-India Industrial Forum and the 10th Annual GPCA Forum. At the GCC-India forum, the Saudi commerce minister urged Gulf and Indian businesses to strengthen economic ties and pursue investment opportunities. An Indian official highlighted India's $1 trillion investment needs and opportunities in sectors like infrastructure. Speakers called for enhancing GCC-India business cooperation. The UAE energy minister said at the GPCA forum that GCC petrochemical producers must continue investing and innovating to ensure industry growth amid global economic challenges. ConocoPhillips Qatar opened a new regional office in The Gate Mall.

Saudi Arabia on the Move - An Aranca Special Report 2013Srinivas Macha
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), a completely oil-dependent economy until a few decades ago,
has now transformed into one of the most vibrant economies in the Middle East. Today, the country has
a diversified economic structure, strong international trade links, a stable political environment, strong
fiscal surplus and a vibrant financial services sector. Saudi Arabia’s increasing contribution to the global
economy has earned it a permanent seat at the G-20 -- the only OPEC member to get the honour. As the
exclusive knowledge partner for The Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference 2013, Aranca has compiled
a special report on Saudi Arabia’s journey till 2025, highlighting the Kingdom’s economic potential,
its influence on the region’s economy and opportunities available. Given Saudi Arabia’s tremendous
potential as an attractive investment destination, we foresee opportunities in the financial sector as
the Kingdom looks to fund its growth plans. We also delve into the challenges around fully exploiting
demographic dividends, reducing reliance on public funding, attracting foreign investors, and reforming
capital markets and financial institutions
Saudi Arabia is one of the top 20 economies in the world and the largest in the Middle East, relying heavily on oil exports which account for 90% of export earnings and 45% of GDP. Ruled by the House of Saud family since 1932, Saudi Arabia has used oil revenues to fund modernization and economic projects to diversify its economy. Under King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, who became ruler in 2005, the private sector has expanded and now accounts for 48% of GDP, with sectors like construction and telecommunications growing rapidly. Saudi Arabia is also working to develop renewable energy, health care, tourism, and infrastructure through large government investments to reduce reliance on oil over the long term.

Kuwait signed a contract to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to meet its energy needs through 2014. This will help satisfy rising air conditioning demand in Kuwait's hot summers. Kuwait began LNG imports in 2009 and typically signs deals with suppliers like Shell to provide LNG during peak summer demand. ROC Oil Company and Horizon Oil announced an all-scrip merger that would create an Asian-focused energy company with combined production of 5.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per year, net reserves of 36.9 million barrels, and net contingent resources of 120.7 million barrels. The merger is supported by both companies' boards and would position the combined company for growth in Asia.

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the International Renewable Energy Agency are seeking applications for their fourth round of funding for renewable energy projects in developing countries totaling $50 million. The loans provided have lower interest rates than traditional loans, ranging from 1-2% depending on the country. So far the partnership has funded $98 million in projects producing over 56 megawatts of renewable energy. Countries in the Middle East and North Africa are potential future recipients as about 28 million people in the region lack access to electricity. ExxonMobil plans to start drilling for oil offshore Liberia in 2016-2017 now that the country has been declared Ebola-free. Lundin Petroleum has received approval to drill exploration
The Zimbabwe government has nationalized the country's diamond mining industry by evicting all existing diamond mining companies from their concessions. The government informed the nine diamond mining firms operating in the country to immediately cease mining activities and vacate the concessions they were operating on. As a result, the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company will now become wholly government-owned, rather than the previous proposal of a joint venture between the government and private mining companies. The government took this decision because the mining companies did not agree to its proposal to consolidate the industry and had failed to renew their special grants.
You raise a valid point. For the manufacturing sector to thrive, the agricultural sector that feeds it must also be strong. Addressing challenges facing small-scale farmers, such as lack of access to funding due to collateral issues, is an important step. Providing permanent A1 permits will help farmers invest in their operations with more security, which could boost agricultural productivity and in turn support local manufacturing. Overall, a holistic approach that strengthens both sectors is needed for the economy to grow.
Saudi Arabia has embarked on a $350 billion economic development program with the goal of establishing itself as a global industrial force. A key part of this plan is building out infrastructure like transportation networks, ports, and telecommunications. The government is heavily investing in projects to upgrade infrastructure like water, healthcare, and transportation in order to support economic growth and meet the needs of its growing population. This infrastructure development is aimed at diversifying the economy beyond oil and establishing Saudi Arabia as a regional hub.

Oman is working to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues. It has seen success in growing non-oil sectors like manufacturing, transport, tourism and financial services, which together grew the economy by 5.2% in 2014. However, oil still accounts for around 60% of exports and the bulk of government revenues. Further development of non-oil industries and attracting foreign investment are seen as important to continue economic diversification.
