The nervous system has two main divisions - the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord, which control and coordinate the activities in the body. The peripheral nervous system consists of nerves that connect the central nervous system to the limbs and organs. A nerve cell, or neuron, is the basic functional unit of the nervous system and transmits signals through electrical and chemical processes.
