Orchids flower 1-2 times per year with flowers lasting days to weeks, require specialized growing medium, fertilizer, and pest control, and take 5+ years from seed to flower as they are difficult to propagate and grow. In contrast, Nepenthes pitchers last over 4 months all year, fertilize themselves, are easy to propagate from seed or cuttings, and take 5+ years to flower which is not necessary as they can be grown for their pitchers. Both orchids and Nepenthes come in a variety of colors and shapes but Nepenthes are generally hardier and easier to grow.
