Necrosis fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease, is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. It begins with symptoms of pain, swelling, and redness of the skin. If not treated quickly with antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue, the infection can spread rapidly and toxically through the fascia and fat layers under the skin.
