Saudi Energy, Vestas celebrates key project construction milestone
Arabian Business + NewBase
The Ministry of Energy of Saudi Arabia commemorated the mid-way mark of the construction of the
Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, the kingdom’s first utility-scale wind farm of more than 400MW capacity
and the largest in the Middle East.
Vestas, the energy industry’s global partner on sustainable energy solutions, is playing a vital role
in the project, having installed half of the 99 V150-4.2MW wind turbines for the project.
Located in the Al Jouf province, 900km north of Riyadh, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm project was
awarded to the consortium by the Renewable Energy Project Development Office (Repdo) of the
Saudi Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources (MEIM) in 2019.
As per the deal, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm will supply electricity under a 20-year purchase
agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), a subsidiary of the Saudi
Electricity Company (SEC), the Saudi power generation and distribution company.
Developed by a consortium led by renewable energy leaders in the region: EDF Renewables and
Masdar, the EPC order was awarded to Vestas in 2019.

The scope of work included the supply and installation of 99 V150-4.2MW wind turbines, as well as
a 20-year Active Output Management 4000 service agreement for the operation and maintenance
of the wind farm.
Vestas was one of the first companies to introduce wind power in the country in 2013. Since then,
Vestas has held several training programs and met-mast campaigns in the Kingdom, and is now
contributing to Saudi Arabia’s 16GW by 2030 through the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm.
Once completed and
commercially operational in
2022, the wind farm will
potentially supply clean
electricity to 70,000 Saudi
households and will displace
988,000 tonnes of carbon
emissions every year, in
support of the kingdom’s
climate change.
Minister of Energy Abdulaziz
Bin Salman along with Prince
Faisal bin Nawaf, Governor of
Al Jouf Province, Ole E.

Dumat Al Jandal construction
site to commemorate the
installation of the wind turbines
by Vestas.
Vestas Mena General Manager Muhamed Bou-Zeid said: "Our ambition as a sustainable energy
solutions provider with a technology leadership in wind power is to co-create a renewable energy
hub in Saudi Arabia and for the wider Middle East together with other sustainability leaders in the
region."
"We believe that the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm is the first step to diversifying not only the energy
sector but also the Renewable Energy sector by adding wind power into the energy mix and
ultimately creating three times more work opportunities for the local talent.
As we strive to complete this project with Quality and Safety as priority, we look forward to
accelerating Saudi Arabia’s clean energy transition and sustainability leadership journey," he added.

Economic Zone. Getty Images
Egypt signed a deal to construct a $7.5 billion petrochemical complex in Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of
Suez, the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
The deal, between the Red Sea National Refining and Petrochemicals Company and the Suez
Canal Economic Zone's development company, is part of the government’s plan to meet the needs
of the local market for petroleum and petrochemical products.
In addition to company representatives, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Tarek Al Mulla,
minister of petroleum and mineral resources, attended the signing ceremony. The project will have
an area of 3.56 million square metres, Mr Al Mulla said.
It will provide many direct and indirect employment opportunities, attract foreign investment and
help Egypt become a regional centre for oil and gas trading, he said. The industrial complex is being
built to reduce the volume of imports, as well as create export opportunities. Products to be made
at the site include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, ship fuel and other petroleum and
chemical products.
The Suez Canal Economic Zone's development arm is working to develop an area of over 20 square
kilometres in Ain Sokhna's industrial zone. In 2020, Egypt led the region in petrochemical sector
investment, followed by Iran and Saudi Arabia, according to a report by the Arab Petroleum
Investment Corporation. Egypt has more than $35bn worth of projects planned over the next five
years, according to Apicorp.
Earlier this year, Egypt signed nine oil and gas exploration deals worth $1bn with local and
international energy companies to conduct exploration along the eastern and western
Mediterranean as well as the Red Sea.

U.S. Oil production in Alaska reaches lowest level in more than 40 years
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Petroleum Supply Monthly
Crude oil production in Alaska averaged 448,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2020, the lowest level of
production since 1976. Last year's production was over 75% less than the state’s peak production
of more than 2 million b/d in 1988.
Production declined in 28 of the 32 years since Alaska’s oil production peak as the state’s oil fields
have matured. The 4% decrease in annual oil production in Alaska in 2020 was part of a larger
decline in U.S. oil production.
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System transports crude oil from the North Slope of Alaska to Valdez on
Alaska’s southern coast. Pipeline deliveries have decreased because of less production. Lower oil
volumes cause oil to move more slowly in the pipeline, and the travel time for oil from the North
Shore to Valdez has increased from 4.5 days in 1988 to 18 days in 2020.
Many areas of the state have not been explored for oil, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
(ANWR). Located in the northeastern part of the state, the ANWR likely holds 10.4 billion barrels of
crude oil, according to U.S. Geological Survey estimates. In January 2021, the Biden administration,
in an executive order, imposed a temporary moratorium on federal oil and natural gas leasing in the
ANWR.
The oil industry is the largest contributor to Alaska’s economy despite the decline in production.
Alaska has no state income or sales tax but relies instead on revenues from the oil and natural gas
industry. Oil revenues supplied more than two-thirds of the state's budget in 2020.
Although Alaska relies on the oil and natural gas industry for its revenue base, production in the
state makes up only 4% of all oil production in the United States. Since 1982, every eligible state

resident has received an annual dividend from the Alaska Permanent Fund, which manages
royalties the state receives from its mineral rights, primarily oil.
Alaska has the third-highest
petroleum demand per capita of
any state. In 2020, Alaska
consumed more petroleum for
electricity generation than any
state except Hawaii.
Petroleum accounted for 16% of
the state’s utility-scale
generation, the third most of any
generation source behind natural
gas (38%) and hydroelectric
power (31%). One-third of the
state’s households rely on
petroleum products such as fuel
oil, kerosene, or propane for
heating.
Biden policy puts 72% of Alaska’s remaining oil at risk,
but output won’t be affected until after 2030
Alaska’s oil days were already considered numbered by the energy industry, but the new
administration’s push for energy transition could hasten the process
The new energy policies brought forward by the Biden administration in the US are set to rock the
country’s oil and gas industry. There has been much discussion over the possible outcome for the
upstream activity of the prolific Gulf of Mexico, but one of the areas that will be affected the most in
relative terms is Alaska. Rystad Energy estimates that about 72% of the state’s remaining
recoverable oil resources could stay in the ground, although the effect on production will be felt only
after 2030.
Alaska’s oil days were already considered numbered by the energy industry, but the new
administration’s push for energy transition could hasten the process. Rystad Energy estimates
Alaska’s remaining recoverable oil reserves to be 23.3 billion barrels of oil and condensates. About
16.8 billion barrels of this may never see the light of day if the temporary bans on oil activity in the
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and on new lease sales on state-wide federal lands and
waters are here to stay.
It's safe to say that the previous administration’s rushed ANWR lease sale did not garner much
interest, but a halt to oil and gas activities would mean that any potential discoveries are taken off
the map. Based on our estimates, a permanent ban on new leases would remove 1.35 billion barrels
of oil resources that could be developed from the currently unawarded or open acreage in ANWR.
An end to new offshore leases in Alaska could result in the state losing out on up to 10 billion barrels
of oil resources from unawarded acreage, according to our research. The state could also miss out
on roughly 4.5 billion barrels of oil resources through unawarded onshore acreage in the National
Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPRA). The oil and gas industry provided about 80% of Alaska’s
state revenues in 2019 and removing oil volumes on this scale would clearly have an immense
impact on the state’s finances.

U.S. energy imports declined in 2020, while exports remained largely unchanged
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Petroleum Supply Monthly
Energy exports from the United States exceeded imports by 3.4 quadrillion British thermal
units (quads) in 2020, the largest margin on record, according to EIA’s Monthly Energy Review.
U.S. energy exports totaled 23.4 quads, nearly equaling the record high set in 2019, and
energy imports fell 13% to 20.0 quads, the lowest level since 1992. The United States exported
more energy than it imported for the second consecutive year.
Our Monthly Energy Review reports aggregate totals of energy data in different physical units
(barrels, cubic feet, etc.) by converting them into common units of heat, measured in British thermal
units. The aggregate heat contents of petroleum, natural gas, and coal vary based on the mix of
component products being consumed.
Decreases in crude oil and natural gas imports largely drove last year’s change in U.S. energy trade.
U.S. crude oil exports have increased every year since 2010 and reached another record high in
2020. In 2020, the United States exported more crude oil—3.2 million barrels per day (b/d)—than
any other petroleum product. U.S. crude oil imports fell to 5.9 million b/d, the lowest level since
1991.

Gross exports of natural gas, which have increased every year since 2014, reached a record high
of 14.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2020. Gross imports of natural gas fell to 7.0 Bcf/d, the
lowest level since 1993.
Both U.S. imports and exports of petroleum products declined in 2020: imports by 15% and exports
by 5%. Propane surpassed distillate fuel oil as the country’s most-exported petroleum product.
Trade volumes of coal and other fuels account for relatively small portions of U.S. total energy trade.
U.S. coal exports, which had increased in 2017 and 2018, decreased in both 2019 and 2020. More
information about total energy consumption, production, trade, and emissions is available in
our Monthly Energy Review.

Oil Slumps With Recent Demand-Led Rally Taking a Breather
Bloomberg + NewBase
Oil declined as a recent rally in equities paused and the dollar firmed.
West Texas Intermediate fell $1.52 to $63.49 a barrel at 1:39 p.m. London time, Brent for June
settlement, which expires Friday, lost 1.9% to $67.29.
Futures in New York dropped 2.3% on Friday as raw materials cooled from a scorching rally, while
the dollar’s gain made commodities priced in the currency less attractive. Prices remain on track for
a weekly gain after topping $65 a barrel on Thursday for the first time since mid-March.
A resurgent coronavirus, most notably in India, is spurring some near-term caution over the demand
picture. But the prospects for higher fuel demand in locations including the U.S., China and the U.K.

continue to brighten the broader outlook with traders betting on a continued reopening of the global
economy.
Travel across China is expected to pick up over an extended Labor Day holiday. Major U.S. cities
are moving to fully reopen and much of Wall Street remains bullish about consumption over the
coming months. But that wasn’t enough to stop crude closing out the month with a whimper.
“There’s likely some profit-taking ahead of a long weekend in the U.K. and concern over Indian
demand,” said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS Group AG.
The short-term risks to the demand outlook have also been showing up in gauges of market health.
The structure of the Middle Eastern Dubai benchmark flipped to a slight contango on Thursday, an
indication that market tightness may be easing. Backwardation in the prompt time-spread for Brent
crude has also narrowed this week.
Commodities across the board have rallied in recent sessions, driven by optimism on the recovery
in key economies and tightening supplies of raw materials. That’s pushed the Bloomberg
Commodity Spot Index to the highest level since 2012 this week.
“This week saw an avalanche of strong data and reassuring developments in the U.S., but that may
have buried the rising global risk of more transmissible Covid variants,” said Vandana Hari, the
founder of energy consultant Vanda Insights in Singapore. “At six-week highs, crude was ripe for a
breather.”

The Energy world – April- 01- -2021
Global electric vehicle numbers set to hit 145 million by end of
the decade, IEA says
CNBC - Anmar Frangoul
The number of electric cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks on roads is expected to hit
145 million by 2030, the International Energy Agency said on Thursday.
KEY POINTS
 International Energy Agency says roughly three million new electric cars were registered last
year, a record amount.
 Around the world, authorities are looking to increase the number of low- and zero-emission
vehicles on their roads.
According to the IEA’s Global Electric Vehicle Outlook, if governments ramp up their efforts to meet
international energy and climate goals, the global electric vehicle fleet could increase further still,
hitting 230 million by the end of the decade. Both of these projections exclude two- and three-
wheeled electric vehicles.
The Paris-based organization said roughly three million new electric cars were registered last year,
a record amount and a 41% rise compared to 2019. This jump pushed the total number of electric
cars on the road to over 10 million, a figure supplemented by approximately 1 million electric buses,
vans and heavy trucks.

The rise in electric car sales in 2020 came even as the worldwide automobile market contracted by
16% due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. In the first quarter of 2021, electric car sales
were almost two and a half times higher than during the same period in 2020.
“While they can’t do the job alone, electric vehicles have an indispensable role to play in reaching
net-zero emissions worldwide,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said in a statement.
“Current sales trends are very encouraging, but our shared climate and energy goals call for even
faster market uptake,” he added.Birol urged governments to use Covid economic recovery
packages to “invest in battery manufacturing and the development of widespread and reliable
charging infrastructure.”
The IEA said consumer spending on electric cars in 2020 totaled $120 billion, a 50% increase
compared to 2019, with government support measures designed to encourage electric vehicle take-
up coming in at $14 billion.
With regards to the latter figure, the IEA said it was “the fifth year in a row in which they have fallen
as a share of total spending.”
“Even if government subsidies remain important for spurring the uptake of electric vehicles, this
suggests sales are increasingly being driven more by consumer choice,” it added.
Taking on Tesla
Around the world, authorities are looking to increase the number of low- and zero-emission vehicles
on their roads in a bid to tackle air pollution and move away from the internal combustion engine.
The U.K., for example, has announced plans to stop selling new diesel and petrol (gasoline) cars
and vans from 2030.

The European Commission’s “Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy,” meanwhile, wants at least
30 million zero-emission cars on the road by 2030. Faced with these targets, major carmakers are
looking to increase their electric vehicle offering and challenge Elon Musk’s Tesla.
Last month, German automotive giant Volkswagen announced plans to establish six “gigafactories”
— which the firm says will be able to manufacture battery cells with a combined energy value of 240
gigawatt hours each year — in Europe by the end of the decade. It also pledged to expand its
charging infrastructure in Europe, North America and China.
March also saw the Volkswagen Group’s CEO, Herbert Diess, dismiss the notion that his firm could
join forces with Tesla, telling CNBC that the German automotive giant was looking to go its own
way.
Speaking to “Squawk Box Europe”, Diess was asked if he would rule out any future deal with Musk’s
electric car maker, in which VW could manufacture its cars, or if the Tesla and VW brands would
ever unite.
“No, we haven’t considered (that), we are going our own way,” he replied. “We want to get close
and then overtake.”
“We think that we can – we need our own software stack, our own technology,” he added. “And
also, I think Tesla, or Elon, is very much thinking ... (about) his way forward. So no, there are no
talks between Elon Musk and myself regarding joining forces.”

About EV:
New research from Canalys shows that global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020 increased by
39% year on year to 3.1 million units. This compares with a sales decline of 14% of the total
passenger car market in 2020. Canalys forecasts that the number of EVs sold will rise to 30 million
in 2028 and EVs will represent nearly half of all passenger cars sold globally by 2030.

In a new digital report, Electric vehicle outlook: 2021 and beyond, Canalys publishes detailed EV
sales data, forecasts and analysis on this fast-growing and fast-changing part of the car market.
“In a tough 2020 for the automotive industry, the strong demand for EVs has been a real bright spot.
This will continue around the world in 2021 and beyond, despite the economically adverse
conditions,” said Chris Jones, Chief Analyst for automotive at Canalys.
Electric vehicles represented almost 5% of all new car sales in 2020. EVs are forecast to reach over
7% of new car sales worldwide in 2021, a further 66% growth, to exceed 5 million units sold.
Approximately 1.3 million EVs were sold in both China and Europe in 2020, four times the EV sales
in the US.
“EV sales in the US represented just 2.4% of new cars sold there, despite it being home to Tesla,
the world’s leading EV manufacturer. Even policies from a more supportive US government won’t
change things overnight,” said Jones.
EV sales will continue to grow throughout the decade, with Canalys forecasting that EVs will
represent 48% of all new cars sold in 2030. “Rapid growth will continue as more electric vehicles
launch and governments set and maintain policies to stimulate EV production and sales.

Reducing ‘range anxiety’ with increases in performance and charging infrastructure will be vital to
entice more buyers,” said Sandy Fitzpatrick, VP at Canalys. “The automotive industry is currently
facing crippling semiconductor shortages, so managing future supply chains and production
systems to cope with the growth will be make or break for any electric vehicle strategies.”

Vestas, the energy industry’s global partner on sustainable energy solutions, is playing a vital role in the project, having installed half of the 99 V150-4.2MW wind turbines for the project. Located in the Al Jouf province, 900km north of Riyadh, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm project was awarded to the consortium by the Renewable Energy Project Development Office (Repdo) of the Saudi Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources (MEIM) in 2019. As per the deal, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm will supply electricity under a 20-year purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), the Saudi power generation and distribution company. Developed by a consortium led by renewable energy leaders in the region: EDF Renewables and Masdar, the EPC order was awarded to Vestas in 2019.

Page 2 The scope of work included the supply and installation of 99 V150-4.2MW wind turbines, as well as a 20-year Active Output Management 4000 service agreement for the operation and maintenance of the wind farm. Vestas was one of the first companies to introduce wind power in the country in 2013. Since then, Vestas has held several training programs and met-mast campaigns in the Kingdom, and is now contributing to Saudi Arabia’s 16GW by 2030 through the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm. Once completed and commercially operational in 2022, the wind farm will potentially supply clean electricity to 70,000 Saudi households and will displace 988,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, in support of the kingdom’s climate change. Minister of Energy Abdulaziz Bin Salman along with Prince Faisal bin Nawaf, Governor of Al Jouf Province, Ole E. Moesby, Ambassador of Denmark to Saudi Arabia, Ludovic Pouille, Ambassador of France to Saudi Arabia, Bruno Bensasson, Group Senior Executive VP Renewable Energies, and CEO of EDF Renewables and Fawaz Al Muharrami, Acting Executive Director, Clean Energy, Masdar, visited the Dumat Al Jandal construction site to commemorate the installation of the wind turbines by Vestas. Vestas Mena General Manager Muhamed Bou-Zeid said: "Our ambition as a sustainable energy solutions provider with a technology leadership in wind power is to co-create a renewable energy hub in Saudi Arabia and for the wider Middle East together with other sustainability leaders in the region." "We believe that the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm is the first step to diversifying not only the energy sector but also the Renewable Energy sector by adding wind power into the energy mix and ultimately creating three times more work opportunities for the local talent. As we strive to complete this project with Quality and Safety as priority, we look forward to accelerating Saudi Arabia’s clean energy transition and sustainability leadership journey," he added.

Egypt is proposing a $7.5bn petrochemicals project across a 3.56 million sq m site at Ain Sokhna, within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Getty Images Egypt signed a deal to construct a $7.5 billion petrochemical complex in Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of Suez, the government said in a statement on Wednesday. The deal, between the Red Sea National Refining and Petrochemicals Company and the Suez Canal Economic Zone's development company, is part of the government’s plan to meet the needs of the local market for petroleum and petrochemical products. In addition to company representatives, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Tarek Al Mulla, minister of petroleum and mineral resources, attended the signing ceremony. The project will have an area of 3.56 million square metres, Mr Al Mulla said. It will provide many direct and indirect employment opportunities, attract foreign investment and help Egypt become a regional centre for oil and gas trading, he said. The industrial complex is being built to reduce the volume of imports, as well as create export opportunities. Products to be made at the site include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, ship fuel and other petroleum and chemical products. The Suez Canal Economic Zone's development arm is working to develop an area of over 20 square kilometres in Ain Sokhna's industrial zone. In 2020, Egypt led the region in petrochemical sector investment, followed by Iran and Saudi Arabia, according to a report by the Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation. Egypt has more than $35bn worth of projects planned over the next five years, according to Apicorp. Earlier this year, Egypt signed nine oil and gas exploration deals worth $1bn with local and international energy companies to conduct exploration along the eastern and western Mediterranean as well as the Red Sea.

Page 4 U.S. Oil production in Alaska reaches lowest level in more than 40 years Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Petroleum Supply Monthly Crude oil production in Alaska averaged 448,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2020, the lowest level of production since 1976. Last year's production was over 75% less than the state’s peak production of more than 2 million b/d in 1988. Production declined in 28 of the 32 years since Alaska’s oil production peak as the state’s oil fields have matured. The 4% decrease in annual oil production in Alaska in 2020 was part of a larger decline in U.S. oil production. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System transports crude oil from the North Slope of Alaska to Valdez on Alaska’s southern coast. Pipeline deliveries have decreased because of less production. Lower oil volumes cause oil to move more slowly in the pipeline, and the travel time for oil from the North Shore to Valdez has increased from 4.5 days in 1988 to 18 days in 2020. Many areas of the state have not been explored for oil, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Located in the northeastern part of the state, the ANWR likely holds 10.4 billion barrels of crude oil, according to U.S. Geological Survey estimates. In January 2021, the Biden administration, in an executive order, imposed a temporary moratorium on federal oil and natural gas leasing in the ANWR. The oil industry is the largest contributor to Alaska’s economy despite the decline in production. Alaska has no state income or sales tax but relies instead on revenues from the oil and natural gas industry. Oil revenues supplied more than two-thirds of the state's budget in 2020. Although Alaska relies on the oil and natural gas industry for its revenue base, production in the state makes up only 4% of all oil production in the United States. Since 1982, every eligible state

Page 5 resident has received an annual dividend from the Alaska Permanent Fund, which manages royalties the state receives from its mineral rights, primarily oil. Alaska has the third-highest petroleum demand per capita of any state. In 2020, Alaska consumed more petroleum for electricity generation than any state except Hawaii. Petroleum accounted for 16% of the state’s utility-scale generation, the third most of any generation source behind natural gas (38%) and hydroelectric power (31%). One-third of the state’s households rely on petroleum products such as fuel oil, kerosene, or propane for heating. Biden policy puts 72% of Alaska’s remaining oil at risk, but output won’t be affected until after 2030 Alaska’s oil days were already considered numbered by the energy industry, but the new administration’s push for energy transition could hasten the process The new energy policies brought forward by the Biden administration in the US are set to rock the country’s oil and gas industry. There has been much discussion over the possible outcome for the upstream activity of the prolific Gulf of Mexico, but one of the areas that will be affected the most in relative terms is Alaska. Rystad Energy estimates that about 72% of the state’s remaining recoverable oil resources could stay in the ground, although the effect on production will be felt only after 2030. Alaska’s oil days were already considered numbered by the energy industry, but the new administration’s push for energy transition could hasten the process. Rystad Energy estimates Alaska’s remaining recoverable oil reserves to be 23.3 billion barrels of oil and condensates. About 16.8 billion barrels of this may never see the light of day if the temporary bans on oil activity in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and on new lease sales on state-wide federal lands and waters are here to stay. It's safe to say that the previous administration’s rushed ANWR lease sale did not garner much interest, but a halt to oil and gas activities would mean that any potential discoveries are taken off the map. Based on our estimates, a permanent ban on new leases would remove 1.35 billion barrels of oil resources that could be developed from the currently unawarded or open acreage in ANWR. An end to new offshore leases in Alaska could result in the state losing out on up to 10 billion barrels of oil resources from unawarded acreage, according to our research. The state could also miss out on roughly 4.5 billion barrels of oil resources through unawarded onshore acreage in the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPRA). The oil and gas industry provided about 80% of Alaska’s state revenues in 2019 and removing oil volumes on this scale would clearly have an immense impact on the state’s finances.

Page 6 U.S. energy imports declined in 2020, while exports remained largely unchanged Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Petroleum Supply Monthly Energy exports from the United States exceeded imports by 3.4 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in 2020, the largest margin on record, according to EIA’s Monthly Energy Review. U.S. energy exports totaled 23.4 quads, nearly equaling the record high set in 2019, and energy imports fell 13% to 20.0 quads, the lowest level since 1992. The United States exported more energy than it imported for the second consecutive year. Our Monthly Energy Review reports aggregate totals of energy data in different physical units (barrels, cubic feet, etc.) by converting them into common units of heat, measured in British thermal units. The aggregate heat contents of petroleum, natural gas, and coal vary based on the mix of component products being consumed. Decreases in crude oil and natural gas imports largely drove last year’s change in U.S. energy trade. U.S. crude oil exports have increased every year since 2010 and reached another record high in 2020. In 2020, the United States exported more crude oil—3.2 million barrels per day (b/d)—than any other petroleum product. U.S. crude oil imports fell to 5.9 million b/d, the lowest level since 1991.

Gross imports of natural gas fell to 7.0 Bcf/d, the lowest level since 1993. Both U.S. imports and exports of petroleum products declined in 2020: imports by 15% and exports by 5%. More information about total energy consumption, production, trade, and emissions is available in our Monthly Energy Review.

Page 9 continue to brighten the broader outlook with traders betting on a continued reopening of the global economy. Travel across China is expected to pick up over an extended Labor Day holiday. Major U.S. cities are moving to fully reopen and much of Wall Street remains bullish about consumption over the coming months. But that wasn’t enough to stop crude closing out the month with a whimper. “There’s likely some profit-taking ahead of a long weekend in the U.K. and concern over Indian demand,” said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS Group AG. The short-term risks to the demand outlook have also been showing up in gauges of market health. The structure of the Middle Eastern Dubai benchmark flipped to a slight contango on Thursday, an indication that market tightness may be easing. Backwardation in the prompt time-spread for Brent crude has also narrowed this week. Commodities across the board have rallied in recent sessions, driven by optimism on the recovery in key economies and tightening supplies of raw materials. That’s pushed the Bloomberg Commodity Spot Index to the highest level since 2012 this week. “This week saw an avalanche of strong data and reassuring developments in the U.S., but that may have buried the rising global risk of more transmissible Covid variants,” said Vandana Hari, the founder of energy consultant Vanda Insights in Singapore. “At six-week highs, crude was ripe for a breather.”

Page 10 NewBase Special Coverage The Energy world – April- 01- -2021 Global electric vehicle numbers set to hit 145 million by end of the decade, IEA says CNBC - Anmar Frangoul The number of electric cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks on roads is expected to hit 145 million by 2030, the International Energy Agency said on Thursday. KEY POINTS  International Energy Agency says roughly three million new electric cars were registered last year, a record amount.  Around the world, authorities are looking to increase the number of low- and zero-emission vehicles on their roads. According to the IEA’s Global Electric Vehicle Outlook, if governments ramp up their efforts to meet international energy and climate goals, the global electric vehicle fleet could increase further still, hitting 230 million by the end of the decade. Both of these projections exclude two- and three- wheeled electric vehicles. The Paris-based organization said roughly three million new electric cars were registered last year, a record amount and a 41% rise compared to 2019. This jump pushed the total number of electric cars on the road to over 10 million, a figure supplemented by approximately 1 million electric buses, vans and heavy trucks.

Page 11 The rise in electric car sales in 2020 came even as the worldwide automobile market contracted by 16% due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. In the first quarter of 2021, electric car sales were almost two and a half times higher than during the same period in 2020. “While they can’t do the job alone, electric vehicles have an indispensable role to play in reaching net-zero emissions worldwide,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said in a statement. “Current sales trends are very encouraging, but our shared climate and energy goals call for even faster market uptake,” he added.Birol urged governments to use Covid economic recovery packages to “invest in battery manufacturing and the development of widespread and reliable charging infrastructure.” The IEA said consumer spending on electric cars in 2020 totaled $120 billion, a 50% increase compared to 2019, with government support measures designed to encourage electric vehicle take- up coming in at $14 billion. With regards to the latter figure, the IEA said it was “the fifth year in a row in which they have fallen as a share of total spending.” “Even if government subsidies remain important for spurring the uptake of electric vehicles, this suggests sales are increasingly being driven more by consumer choice,” it added. Taking on Tesla Around the world, authorities are looking to increase the number of low- and zero-emission vehicles on their roads in a bid to tackle air pollution and move away from the internal combustion engine. The U.K., for example, has announced plans to stop selling new diesel and petrol (gasoline) cars and vans from 2030.

Page 12 The European Commission’s “Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy,” meanwhile, wants at least 30 million zero-emission cars on the road by 2030. Faced with these targets, major carmakers are looking to increase their electric vehicle offering and challenge Elon Musk’s Tesla. Last month, German automotive giant Volkswagen announced plans to establish six “gigafactories” — which the firm says will be able to manufacture battery cells with a combined energy value of 240 gigawatt hours each year — in Europe by the end of the decade. It also pledged to expand its charging infrastructure in Europe, North America and China. March also saw the Volkswagen Group’s CEO, Herbert Diess, dismiss the notion that his firm could join forces with Tesla, telling CNBC that the German automotive giant was looking to go its own way. Speaking to “Squawk Box Europe”, Diess was asked if he would rule out any future deal with Musk’s electric car maker, in which VW could manufacture its cars, or if the Tesla and VW brands would ever unite. “No, we haven’t considered (that), we are going our own way,” he replied. “We want to get close and then overtake.” “We think that we can – we need our own software stack, our own technology,” he added. “And also, I think Tesla, or Elon, is very much thinking ... (about) his way forward. So no, there are no talks between Elon Musk and myself regarding joining forces.”

In a new digital report, Electric vehicle outlook: 2021 and beyond, Canalys publishes detailed EV sales data, forecasts and analysis on this fast-growing and fast-changing part of the car market. “In a tough 2020 for the automotive industry, the strong demand for EVs has been a real bright spot. This will continue around the world in 2021 and beyond, despite the economically adverse conditions,” said Chris Jones, Chief Analyst for automotive at Canalys. Electric vehicles represented almost 5% of all new car sales in 2020. EVs are forecast to reach over 7% of new car sales worldwide in 2021, a further 66% growth, to exceed 5 million units sold. Approximately 1.3 million EVs were sold in both China and Europe in 2020, four times the EV sales in the US. “EV sales in the US represented just 2.4% of new cars sold there, despite it being home to Tesla, the world’s leading EV manufacturer. Even policies from a more supportive US government won’t change things overnight,” said Jones. EV sales will continue to grow throughout the decade, with Canalys forecasting that EVs will represent 48% of all new cars sold in 2030. “Rapid growth will continue as more electric vehicles launch and governments set and maintain policies to stimulate EV production and sales.
