We innovate and employ semantic web, machine learning, NLP/IR, data mining, network science and highly scalable computing techniques. Our highly interdisciplinary research impacts health and clinical applications, biomedical and translational research, epidemiology, cognitive science, social good, policy, development, etc. A majority of our $12+ million in active funds come from the NSF and NIH. In this talk, I will provide an overview of some of our major research projects.
Kno.e.sis is highly successful in its primary mission of exceptional student outcomes: our students have exceptional publication and real-world impact and our PhDs compete with their counterparts from top 10 schools for initial jobs in research universities, top industry research labs, and highly competitive companies. A key reason for Kno.e.sis' success is its unique work culture involving teamwork to solve complex problems. Practically all our work involves real-world challenges, real-world data, interdisciplinary collaborators, path-breaking research to solve challenges, real-world deployments, real-world use, and measurable real-world impact.

Artificial intelligence and the future of global health

Concurrent advances in information technology infrastructure and mobile computing power in many low and
middle-income countries (LMICs) have raised hopes that artificial intelligence (AI) might help to address challenges
unique to the field of global health and accelerate achievement of the health-related sustainable development goals. A
series of fundamental questions have been raised about AI-driven health interventions, and whether the tools,
methods, and protections traditionally used to make ethical and evidence-based decisions about new technologies can
be applied to AI. Deployment of AI has already begun for a broad range of health issues common to LMICs, with
interventions focused primarily on communicable diseases, including tuberculosis and malaria. Types of AI vary, but
most use some form of machine learning or signal processing. Several types of machine learning methods are
frequently used together, as is machine learning with other approaches, most often signal processing. AI-driven
health interventions fit into four categories relevant to global health researchers: (1) diagnosis, (2) patient morbidity
or mortality risk assessment, (3) disease outbreak prediction and surveillance, and (4) health policy and planning.
However, much of the AI-driven intervention research in global health does not describe ethical, regulatory, or
practical considerations required for widespread use or deployment at scale. Despite the field remaining nascent,
AI-driven health interventions could lead to improved health outcomes in LMICs. Although some challenges of
developing and deploying these interventions might not be unique to these settings, the global health community will
need to work quickly to establish guidelines for development, testing, and use, and develop a user-driven research
agenda to facilitate equitable and ethical use.
Introduction
AI is changing how health services are delivered in many
high-income settings, particularly in specialty care
(eg, radiology and pathology).1–3 This development has
been facilitated by the growing availability of large
datasets and novel analytical methods that rely on such
datasets. Concurrent advances in information technology
(IT) infrastructure and mobile computing power have
raised hopes that AI might also provide opportunities to
address health challenges in LMICs.4 These challenges,
including acute health workforce shortages and weak
public health surveillance systems, undermine global
progress towards achieving the health-related sustainable
development goals (SDGs).5,6 Although not unique to
such countries, these challenges are particularly relevant
given their contribution to morbidity and mortality.7,8
AI-driven health technologies could be used to address
many of these and other system-related challenges.4

Both media and culture are connected and they are inseparable. Various levels of understanding influence the contents of the media; on the other hand, platforms and contents of the media have a big impact on the day to day and cultural practices. One of the practices influenced by the media is the health-related decisions of individuals (Georgiou, 2017). Therefore, media has measurable effects which come as a result of the messages given by the media. We can, therefore, say that media both reflects society and shapes the culture.
Media reflect culture
Taking legacy media for instance, for a magazine dealing with fashion, in determining what ladies should and should not dress, they need first of all to mirror the present-day society so that they will be able to establish what the women want. Without doing this, the magazine will be nothing than common sense within a typical mind of the woman. This, therefore, means that the media has to establish certain things to do or not do which means they are reflecting the society (Berger, 2017).
Secondly, Legacy media depend more on society than society depends on them. Even if without the mass media the society would struggle getting news broadcast and entertainment, the society will still be alive but without the society, the media will not be there. They, therefore, have to reflect what the culture of the society wants.
For instance, there is this radio show which conducted a publicity stunt which shocked the audience, what followed was unanimous public reactions of condemnation from the public. The culprits engineered the stunt which was to push the boundaries of acceptable decency, but the reactions of condemnation caught them by surprise. This is simply because they failed to realize that society is much more conservative than they expected. The stunt itself as something of a mirror, but the society did not like what they saw. They believed that the stunt crossed the lie and the society cried out. The line that marks out the acceptable and unacceptable things is still clear to society, and the media just reflects it.
Media create culture
In another sense, the media pushes the boundaries of values, therefore, contributing to the shaping of the culture. The media is capable of controlling a whole nation if the media barons or political parties manipulate it (Fiske, & Hancock, 2016). The media sometimes cannot be trusted in giving out facts without slanting them in one specific direction of interpretation. The reporting offered is based on some hid.
Mobile Health

The rapid growth in the use of smartphones has opened a new world of opportunities for use in behavioral
health care. Mobile phone software applications (apps) are available for a variety of useful tasks to
include symptom assessment, psychoeducation, resource location, and tracking of treatment progress.
The latest two-way communication functionality of smartphones also brings new capabilities for
telemental health. There is very little information available, however, regarding the integration of
smartphone and other mobile technology into care. In this paper, we provide an overview of smartphone
use in behavioral health care and discuss options for integrating mobile technology into clinical practice.
We also discuss limitations, practical issues, and recommendations.

Smartphones are mobile telephones with computer functionality
that allow users to run software applications and connect to the
Internet or other data networks. This technology provides users
with the ability to engage in some activities on their phone much
in the same manner that they could with a traditional personal
computer except with the advantage and convenience of compact
size and mobility. In 2008, smartphones only made up 10% of
cellular phones used in the United States. Before the end of 2011,
however, smartphones will likely become the most commonly
used cellular phone device (Entner, 2010), and by 2013, smart-
phones are expected to overtake PCs as the most common Web
access device worldwide (“Gartner Highlights Key Predictions,”
2010). At least 300,000 software applications or apps have been
developed for smartphones (“Introducing the App,” 2010), and as
of November 2010, more than 8,000 health related apps were
available for users to download (Dolan, 2010).
Medical professionals have long been some of the earliest
adopters of personal mobile technology for assisting with the daily
routine of their practice. Portable electronic devices and special-
ized software have been utilized for health research, education,
communication, reference, and patient care from the very earliest
commercially marketed examples in the 1990s, such as the Apple
Newton (Schweitzer & Hardmeier, 1996; Stratton et al., 1998)
through the rise and decline of Palm Pilots and other personal
digital assistants (PDAs; Teall, 2009; Vishwanath, Brodsky, &
Shaha, 2009) to the current boom in multifunctional smartphones.

Our highly interdisciplinary research impacts health and clinical applications, biomedical and translational research, epidemiology, cognitive science, social good, policy, development, etc. A majority of our $12+ million in active funds come from the NSF and NIH. In this talk, I will provide an overview of some of our major research projects.
Kno.e.sis is highly successful in its primary mission of exceptional student outcomes: our students have exceptional publication and real-world impact and our PhDs compete with their counterparts from top 10 schools for initial jobs in research universities, top industry research labs, and highly competitive companies. A key reason for Kno.e.sis' success is its unique work culture involving teamwork to solve complex problems. Practically all our work involves real-world challenges, real-world data, interdisciplinary collaborators, path-breaking research to solve challenges, real-world deployments, real-world use, and measurable real-world impact.
In this talk, I will also seek to discuss our choice of research topics and our unique ecosystem that prepares our students for exceptional careers.

Artificial intelligence and the future of global health

Concurrent advances in information technology infrastructure and mobile computing power in many low and
middle-income countries (LMICs) have raised hopes that artificial intelligence (AI) might help to address challenges
unique to the field of global health and accelerate achievement of the health-related sustainable development goals. A
series of fundamental questions have been raised about AI-driven health interventions, and whether the tools,
methods, and protections traditionally used to make ethical and evidence-based decisions about new technologies can
be applied to AI. Deployment of AI has already begun for a broad range of health issues common to LMICs, with
interventions focused primarily on communicable diseases, including tuberculosis and malaria. Types of AI vary, but
most use some form of machine learning or signal processing. Several types of machine learning methods are
frequently used together, as is machine learning with other approaches, most often signal processing. AI-driven
health interventions fit into four categories relevant to global health researchers: (1) diagnosis, (2) patient morbidity
or mortality risk assessment, (3) disease outbreak prediction and surveillance, and (4) health policy and planning.
However, much of the AI-driven intervention research in global health does not describe ethical, regulatory, or
practical considerations required for widespread use or deployment at scale. Despite the field remaining nascent,
AI-driven health interventions could lead to improved health outcomes in LMICs. Although some challenges of
developing and deploying these interventions might not be unique to these settings, the global health community will
need to work quickly to establish guidelines for development, testing, and use, and develop a user-driven research
agenda to facilitate equitable and ethical use.
Introduction
AI is changing how health services are delivered in many
high-income settings, particularly in specialty care
(eg, radiology and pathology).1–3 This development has
been facilitated by the growing availability of large
datasets and novel analytical methods that rely on such
datasets. Concurrent advances in information technology
(IT) infrastructure and mobile computing power have
raised hopes that AI might also provide opportunities to
address health challenges in LMICs.4 These challenges,
including acute health workforce shortages and weak
public health surveillance systems, undermine global
progress towards achieving the health-related sustainable
development goals (SDGs).5,6 Although not unique to
such countries, these challenges are particularly relevant
given their contribution to morbidity and mortality.7,8

many of these and other system-related challenges.4

Both media and culture are connected and they are inseparable. Various levels of understanding influence the contents of the media; on the other hand, platforms and contents of the media have a big impact on the day to day and cultural practices. One of the practices influenced by the media is the health-related decisions of individuals (Georgiou, 2017). Therefore, media has measurable effects which come as a result of the messages given by the media. We can, therefore, say that media both reflects society and shapes the culture.
Media reflect culture
Taking legacy media for instance, for a magazine dealing with fashion, in determining what ladies should and should not dress, they need first of all to mirror the present-day society so that they will be able to establish what the women want. Without doing this, the magazine will be nothing than common sense within a typical mind of the woman. This, therefore, means that the media has to establish certain things to do or not do which means they are reflecting the society (Berger, 2017).
Secondly, Legacy media depend more on society than society depends on them. Even if without the mass media the society would struggle getting news broadcast and entertainment, the society will still be alive but without the society, the media will not be there. They, therefore, have to reflect what the culture of the society wants.
For instance, there is this radio show which conducted a publicity stunt which shocked the audience, what followed was unanimous public reactions of condemnation from the public. The culprits engineered the stunt which was to push the boundaries of acceptable decency, but the reactions of condemnation caught them by surprise. This is simply because they failed to realize that society is much more conservative than they expected. The stunt itself as something of a mirror, but the society did not like what they saw. They believed that the stunt crossed the lie and the society cried out. The line that marks out the acceptable and unacceptable things is still clear to society, and the media just reflects it.
Media create culture
In another sense, the media pushes the boundaries of values, therefore, contributing to the shaping of the culture. The media is capable of controlling a whole nation if the media barons or political parties manipulate it (Fiske, & Hancock, 2016). The media sometimes cannot be trusted in giving out facts without slanting them in one specific direction of interpretation. The reporting offered is based on some hid.
Mobile Health

size and mobility. In 2008, smartphones only made up 10% of
cellular phones used in the United States. Before the end of 2011,
however, smartphones will likely become the most commonly
used cellular phone device (Entner, 2010), and by 2013, smart-
phones are expected to overtake PCs as the most common Web
access device worldwide (“Gartner Highlights Key Predictions,”
2010). At least 300,000 software applications or apps have been
developed for smartphones (“Introducing the App,” 2010), and as
of November 2010, more than 8,000 health related apps were
available for users to download (Dolan, 2010).
Medical professionals have long been some of the earliest
adopters of personal mobile technology for assisting with the daily
routine of their practice. Portable electronic devices and special-
ized software have been utilized for health research, education,
communication, reference, and patient care from the very earliest
commercially marketed examples in the 1990s, such as the Apple
Newton (Schweitzer & Hardmeier, 1996; Stratton et al., 1998)
through the rise and decline of Palm Pilots and other personal
digital assistants (PDAs; Teall, 2009; Vishwanath, Brodsky, &
Shaha, 2009) to the current boom in multifunctional smartphones.

Introduction:
As we look to the future, nurses focused on population health concerns will
continue
to play an essential role in improving the health of our nation and the world. Increased emphasis on health promotion and illness prevention will help to build a culture of health. Technology can play an important role in this effort. "Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice" (American Nurses Association, 2014, para. 1).
Community health nurses have been pioneers in the use of information systems. Long ago, they recognized the value of electronic health records to store, transport, and report data online. The need to collect and report aggregate data has spurred the digitization of community and public health records. Also, community health nurses have understood the value of handheld computing devices that allow them to access and document information while on the go, thus freeing them from the need to tote paper records or go to the office to chart. Information technology has influenced the way that community health nurses carry out their daily functions in profound ways.

Challenges associated with ageing from a public health perspective
Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapy
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.
