INTERNATIONALIZATION AT NORMANDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Internationalization at Normandale
• Internationalization is an approach that has been used in 4-yr higher ed. settings since the 1990s to
provide interdisciplinary, sustainable international education opportunities to students. NCC has one of
the only 2-yr internationalization models in the country.
• Our internationalization work began in 2016 with the first of two consecutive grants from the U.S.
Department of Education Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages Office awarded to
the NCC World Languages and Cultures Department:
• AGILE (Accessible Global Immersion Learning Experiences) 2016-2018
• Language and culture-focused study abroad, professional development, International Experience
Certificate
• CIRCLE (Customizing Internationalization to Reflect Community Learning Environments) 2018-2020
• Focus on diaspora, study away, Somali language and culture program

What does it mean to be global-ready?
Global-ready Normandale faculty, staff, and students demonstrate intercultural competence
and a commitment to collaboratively solving local and global problems. Intercultural
competence includes:
• an awareness of one's own cultural self
• an understanding of how culture shapes worldviews
• the knowledge that values are not universal and cultures are not static
• an understanding of how power functions locally and globally
• the ability to communicate effectively (verbally and non-verbally) with people from a variety
of cultural backgrounds.

NCC Internationalization: Resources for Teaching Local-Global Connections Across Disciplines

  • 2. Internationalization at Normandale • Internationalization is an approach that has been used in 4-yr higher ed. settings since the 1990s to provide interdisciplinary, sustainable international education opportunities to students. NCC has one of the only 2-yr internationalization models in the country. • Our internationalization work began in 2016 with the first of two consecutive grants from the U.S. Department of Education Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages Office awarded to the NCC World Languages and Cultures Department: • AGILE (Accessible Global Immersion Learning Experiences) 2016-2018 • Language and culture-focused study abroad, professional development, International Experience Certificate • CIRCLE (Customizing Internationalization to Reflect Community Learning Environments) 2018-2020 • Focus on diaspora, study away, Somali language and culture program

  • 4. What does it mean to be global-ready? Global-ready Normandale faculty, staff, and students demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to collaboratively solving local and global problems. Intercultural competence includes: • an awareness of one's own cultural self • an understanding of how culture shapes worldviews • the knowledge that values are not universal and cultures are not static • an understanding of how power functions locally and globally • the ability to communicate effectively (verbally and non-verbally) with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
