Introduction to
evolution
01
You can enter a subtitle here if you need it
Definition of evolution
Mercury takes a little more than 58
days to complete its rotation, so
try to imagine how long days must
be there! Since the temperatures
are so extreme, albeit not as
extreme as on Venus, Mercury has
been deemed to be non-habitable
for humans
Mercury is the closest planet to
the Sun and the smallest one in
the entire Solar System. Contrary
to popular belief, this planet's
name has nothing to do with the
liquid metal. Mercury was, instead,
named after the famous Roman
messenger god Mercurius
Historical overview
Do you know what helps you make your point
crystal clear? Lists like this one:
● They’re simple
● You can organize your ideas clearly
● You’ll never forget to buy milk!
And the most important thing: the audience won’t
miss the point of your presentation

the Sun. It’s hot and has a

  • 5. Introduction to evolution 01 You can enter a subtitle here if you need it
  • 6. Definition of evolution Mercury takes a little more than 58 days to complete its rotation, so try to imagine how long days must be there! Since the temperatures are so extreme, albeit not as extreme as on Venus, Mercury has been deemed to be non-habitable for humans Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest one in the entire Solar System. Contrary to popular belief, this planet's name has nothing to do with the liquid metal. Mercury was, instead, named after the famous Roman messenger god Mercurius
  • 7. Historical overview Do you know what helps you make your point crystal clear? Lists like this one: ● They’re simple ● You can organize your ideas clearly ● You’ll never forget to buy milk! And the most important thing: the audience won’t miss the point of your presentation
  • 8. Early theories Venus has a beautiful name and is the second planet from the Sun. It’s hot and has a poisonous atmosphere Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest one in the Solar System—it’s only a bit larger than the Moon Charles Darwin Evolutionary biology
  • 9. Understanding natural selection Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest of them all Venus has a beautiful name and is the second planet from the Sun Despite being red, Mars is actually a cold place. It’s full of iron oxide dust Principles Variation Inheritance
  • 10. Mechanisms of evolution Mars is actually a very cold place Venus has extremely high temperatures Jupiter is the biggest planet of them all Saturn is a gas giant and has several rings Genetic drift Mutation Gene flow Adaptation

  • 14. A picture is worth a thousand words
  • 15. Evolutionary patterns in various species Images reveal large amounts of data, so remember: use an image instead of a long text. Your audience will appreciate it

Rubric Criteria Excellent Proficient Basic Limited Introduction Clearly and engaging Clear overview Basic thesis statement Lacks a clear introduction Content knowledge Thorough understanding of natural selection Solid understanding of natural selection Demonstrates a basic understanding Shows limited understanding Evidence Comprehensive and relevant evidence Includes sufficient evidence Presents some evidence and examples Provides limited or irrelevant evidence
  • 28. Multiple choice questions What is the primary driving force behind natural selection? Genetic mutation Environmental changes Selective breeding What evidence supports the theory of evolution? Observations of rapid, instantaneous changes in species The intentional creation of new species through selective breeding Fossil records showing a progression of life forms over time
  • 29. Short answer questions Explain the role of genetic variation in the process of natural selection Describe one piece of evidence supporting the theory of evolution, other than the fossil record
  • 30. Group discussion “Survival of the fittest in the classroom”: the objective of this group discussion is to deepen students' understanding of natural selection by applying these concepts to a hypothetical classroom scenario Introduction 10” Trait identification 15” Group discussion 20” Evidence analysis 15” Case studies 20” Conclusion 10”
  • 31. Practical application “Evolutionary survival game”: simulate the principles of natural selection and evolution through a hands-on game. This activity helps students understand how traits can affect an organism's survival and reproduction Materials ● Index cards ● Markers ● Timer Each student is assigned a trait 01 Move around the classroom and interact 02 Determine which traits would survive 03 Exchange traits for genetic variation 04
  • 32. Essay “Evolving perspectives : natural selection in the modern world”: Discuss Charles Darwin's groundbreaking ideas and how they revolutionized our understanding of life on Earth Paragraph 1 01 Principles of natural selection Paragraph 2 02 Human impact on evolution Paragraph 3 03 Evolutionary medicine Paragraph 4 04 Tech disruptions and evolution Conclusion 05 Conclude the essay by summarizing the key points discussed and emphasizing the importance of the topic
