Essay about Expansion Of Nato
NATO starts the year 2000 with the issue of concern. The European Allies' defense capability,
stabilization efforts in the Balkans, and relations with Russia are at the top of a highly charged
agenda.
In 1999 NATO accomplished many tasks, which were reviewed in the December 15th Washington
Summit. They approved an updated Strategic Concept at the Washington Summit; admitted as new
members the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland; contributed decisively, in particular through the
conduct of their air campaign and the subsequent deployment of KFOR (NATO–led international
peace force), to the international community's objective of creating the basis for long–term peace and
stability in Kosovo.
What is NATO? NATO is the North Atlantic

This enables them to pursue, in different ways, cooperative programs on a wide range of practical
security–related issues of benefit to their countries and to Europe as a whole. Both countries are
members of the Euro–Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). NATO continues to attach importance
to discussions and practical co–operation with Russia. Their aim remains to establish a strong, stable
and enduring partnership within the framework of the NATO–Russia Founding Act.
NATO encourages Russia to resume co–operation on the broad range of issues foreseen in the
Founding Act and to engage actively in the EAPC and the Partnership for Peace. NATO also
emphasizes that the further development of their co–operation depends on Russia's respect for
international norms and obligations.
There are still concerns about the conflict in Chechnya. NATO condemns, in particular, Russian
threats against unarmed civilians, such as those in Grozny. They also condemn terrorism in all its
forms but believe that Russia's pursuit of a purely military solution to the conflict is undermining its
objectives. NATO urges Russia to exercise the fullest restraint, to refrain from the use of force
against civilians and protect their human rights, to facilitate the provision of humanitarian aid to
those in need, and to co–operate fully with international relief agencies and to ensure security for

In recent events, President Trump mocked the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) saying
that it is an alliance focused on old issues that are no longer relevant to our present–day problems
and that it's a burden that drains American resources with partners that do not contribute to the
economic costs. The issue with this is that President Trump has a major impact on the way other
countries view America and on the possibilities of us entering war, his recent comments had raised
questions about what his intentions are in terms of global affairs. However, the impacts Trump has
on our relationship with NATO is important to keep in mind because NATO is a very important
alliance that helps us and many other countries when it comes to wars...show more content...
The Warsaw Pact focused on the objective of creating a coordinated defense among its member
nations in order to deter an enemy attack. They began to exercise even tighter control over the other
Communist states in Eastern Europe. After the Cold war ended and communism fell, NATO remained
as an alliance and many other counties have been added to the organization since then.
Prior to the development of NATO, there were alliances between the world powers, specifically
before World War I, there used to be the Allied and Central Powers. Which created a similar
system that NATO operates on, the countries involved would all work together and join each
other in wars, but the alliance failed to stay until NATO was developed. Being a part of NATO is
very important to America because it gives us support if we were to enter war and we're a part of
a team of the most developed countries there are, which is very beneficial to us. It creates a
safeguard for the freedom and security of the involved countries through political and military
means. It keeps us safe from communism and terrorism, always knowing that we have someone to
back us up, and prevents world wars by making people compromise.
President Trump officially pronounced NATO rehabilitated, taking credit for transforming it into a
modern, cost–sharing, terrorism–fighting pillar of American and European security. Although,

How Did Russia Respond To NATO Expansion?
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded in 1949 as a means of collective
security for the West to defend against the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. With the collapse of the
Soviet Union in 1991, NATO seemed to have lost a main reason for existing. As former Eastern Bloc
nations expressed interest in participating in NATOoperations or even joining, Russia became
steadily uneasy. When evaluating their response to NATO expansion in the 1990's, did Russia act
in an offensive or defensive manner? J.L. Black presents a plethora of primary accounts of the years
encompassing NATO expansion to give the reader an idea exactly what the Russian government was
thinking at the time. It seems clear that NATO expansion caused...show more content...
The trend that is common here is that Russia is constantly isolated. They consistently find
themselves in a compromising strategic position with insufficient allies. With NATO taking
advantage of the Soviet collapse, Russia lost a lot of influence with former Soviet states as they
joined NATO sub–organizations. This is a clear infringement on the Russian sphere of influence.
Russia has only one option: reach out to the non–Western world in an attempt to find a
counterbalance to NATO and the West. In 1955, the Warsaw Treaty Organization was formed,
seemingly as a counter balance to NATO. But Black points out that this collective security
agreement was not signed until 6 years after the formation of NATO, and was actually made in
reaction to West Germany's inclusion in NATO (119). This mimics Russia's reaching out to nations
such as China, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq following the NATO expansion of the 1990's. This
continuance of a policy of multi–polarity supports the claim that any strategic move Russia makes is
in reaction to NATO expansion eastward. Some may say that Russia went further than just gaining
security with these nations as it provided them with the assistance in developing nuclear energy
programs, provided weapons, and practiced join military tactics. But this is all necessary when one

NATO's degree of involvement is not limited to its member states as over 40 states, which are not
members of the organization, are involved in political and security issues concerning the
organization. Roping in other countries has facilitated improved exchange of information, enhanced
understanding of conflicts in regions where NATO seeks to intervene but does not have a presence.
Despite being an American–centric entity, NATO's functions have all the attributes of an
international organization working for the preservation of international peace.

by way of a United Nations Security Council, is perhaps the most prominent operation undertaken

The existence of Al–Qaeda was acknowledged and accepted by the United States during the final
years of Cold War era. In the contemporary world, labeling of organizations/regimes as 'dangerous
to global peace' is a popular way of building support for warranting a military intervention. An
attack on America was the standard applied to ascertain the status of an organization, (which had
been involved in terrorist activities in the past) as one which possessed threat to peace. The western
coalition's ouster of Taliban created a vacuum of power in Kabul. The Taliban's hardline system of
governance during its rule was also complimented by a stable security environment, which was
ravaged after the invasion in 2001. The war also took a massive toll on the civilian population,
resulting in thousands of civilian deaths which could be attributed directly or indirectly to operations
undertaken by the US–led mission. The destruction caused to civilian population deepened the
divide between the west and Afghan society as a lot of individuals, whose kin were killed in NATO
operations were driven towards radical ideology, which Al–Qaeda and Taliban tapped into.
Though most international troops deployed in Afghanistan have now departed the country, security
situation still remains uncertain. As Afghan security forces prepare to deal with the challenges
which are likely to emanate, the country faces a long road to recovery, as it

President Trump is not correct that this alliance is obsolete. NATO is incredibly relevant in society
today and implements policy and action across the globe. As recent as April 12, 2017 following a
meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the president affirmed the United States
commitment to the alliance. NATO is now doing more to combat terrorism and has made the
necessary changes to realign the United States with their collective interests according to Trump.
Then president–elect Donald Trump, stated that NATO did not even discuss terrorism, that the
organization was not designed for the ideal. Actually, NATO has been actively dealing with
terrorism since the 1980s. Yesterday's Soviet Union has been replaced with today's...show more

What NATO is doing now is simply not part of its original detail expected as the world has
changed since 1949. Jihadists have taken the stage as the new "Red Devil," and the evolving
alliance known as NATO wants to survive. The persistence of NATO proves that institutions adapt
to changing surroundings to survive rather than die. As Mearsheimer said about states, the key
incentive is to survive. States that do not act aggressively get overrun. The same can be said for
institutions, if NATO does not go on the advance on occasion, then it will fall into the ash heap of
history.
President Trump's initial remarks about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization did weaken the
alliance's credibility. NATO was rattled by Trump's accusation that NATO was obsolete, the alliance's
largest power seeming to disown the validity of the institution. With President Trump's words, the
world was reminded of the fragile system humanity created, government. There is nothing natural
about states nor the institutions that seem to organize the chaos. In a world of social constructs,
there is that reminder of what if the United States were to leave NATO? There is no international
police to stop the U.S. from leaving or protect the "free–loading" countries which depend on the
resources of the United States. The international arena is the state of anarchy. NATO would miss
