AppSphere 15 - Transforming the Business: The Role of DevOpsAppDynamics
DevOps practices are being used by an increasing number of IT executives and teams across development, application support, and operations to increase the speed and quality of application deployments. Besides technology and process benefits, DevOps can drive significant business outcomes, and lead a bottoms up approach for transforming culture and organizational structures. This session will answer the following questions:
- How do DevOps practices increase IT performance?
- What metrics should I use to gauge success, and how should they be defined?
- What role can application performance and analytics play in DevOps, and delivering business value?
- How does DevOps transform the security, compliance, and audit conversation?
This deck was originally presented at AppSphere 2015.
Every part of a business needs technology to deliver new products and services, to make use of data, or to provide better experiences for customers, partners, and employees. In order to deliver this, IT can no longer function as the sole technology to the business; it must transform into an adaptive, responsive and nimble organization that can keep up with the pace of the digital era.
This presentation will show you how to create that transformation, suggest roles and functions for the modern IT organization, and provide a real-world case study of one major company that made the shift.
IT leaders from across North America were invited to share their viewpoint and perspective on delivering Agile IT. The study reflects the responses and trends related to their ability to deliver on business demands and readiness of existing technology to support those needs. We aggregated the results into following major themes: Strategy vs Reality, Agility & Technology Readiness, and Culture, Structure & People.
With Industry 4.0 becoming more of a reality every day and new technologies and capabilities breaking onto the industrial scene regularly, there are more opportunities than ever to advance automation systems. System integrators are often the first to see and implement new technologies, as well as the first to learn of the common misconceptions and pitfalls that come with quickly changing trends.
What new technology is a fleeting fad, and what is here to stay? What are the best practices for securing and expanding industrial systems? Where does the industry appear to be headed in the coming years?
In this engaging roundtable webinar, expert system integrators from a diverse range of backgrounds will offer their insights, tips, and stories about their experiences on these questions and more, from the front lines of industrial integration.
Tech Mahindra and CollabNet have worked together on a number of mission-critical projects, and over the course of their partnership have developed unique expertise in lifecycle, development-to-production metrics. Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Companies struggle to reconcile
Consumerisation of IT and the IoT is driving speed
Which is why we need DevOps right? I’d like to take a look at what businesses really want
Great quote
Ever been asked to deliver “DevOps”?
CIO survey
“couldn’t go to board an ask for £500k for DevOps”
“Focus on high deployment numbers out of context. why do I want 50 deploys per day? Finance team don’t want that, they work on monthly cycles so improving to monthly deployments would be awesome.”
In this analogy is DevOps the drill (although it’s not a tool in the traditional sense) and business success/value the hole?
Let’s look at some of the research into successful companies
McKinsey has being maintaining this Organizational Health Index since 1964. Their index is built by surveying executives and employees at large size organizations on a variety of topic and scoring them relative to others
OHI has been a great predictor of success for many years,
since 2013 it also includes questions specifically around “agility” for both executive and employees again
Discuss Quadrants (Q4 2015 report). 161 leading companies with 365,000 employees.
X is stability, Y is speed
Would not expect sluggish companies to thrive or companies at break neck speed that do not stabilise processes and structures
Many assume speed & stability pull in opposite directions and are negatively correlated
How do those companies in Agile quadrant rank for OHI?
70% of the agile companies have top quartile OHI.
Myth of speed and stability being negatively correlated disproved
Big question is are all these companies doing DevOps? Did they buy a magic toolkit to give them this advantage or characteristic?
NO. But they share certain characteristics which differentiate them from the non-agile companies
Pick out a a few of these practices that you would not typically associate with DevOps.
Role Clarity. Not full stack developer as common in DevOps. This isn’t wrong but there a large group of successful companies that separate Dev and Ops yet motivate using role clarity.
Top down innovation / Inspirational leaders: again not typically associated with DevOps.
We’ve established businesses that want to succeed want Agility and this is achieved through Continuous Delivery.
Often confused with DevOps but in fact very well defined.
Few know more about DevOps and Agile and their associated benefits than Andrew Clay Shafer
Co Founder of Puppet, then worked at Cloudscaling, Rackspace, Openstack and now Pivotal
Focus on and select principles
Underpin with best practices and tools become interchangeable
Let’s look at the principle of Continuous Delivery
Martin Fowler defines very nicely how you know IF you’re doing CD
Remember CD has no lineage to DevOps
There is an emphasis on cultural elements. Priorities, fast feedback, knowledge sharing.
How important is culture to performance
Source - SODR 2015
Organisatonal Culture has a higher impact on performance than IT
Significant impact on burnout which is a key contributor to losing staff
Retention is important. Anyone hiring? If like us you are you won’t be surprised by this…
Source CIPD Resourcing & Talent planning report 2015
Professional body for HR and People Development
50% of CEOs have talent management as a top priority.
Over 75% find recruiting difficult with tech specialists the most difficult
Employment brand & Org values are key to attracting and retaining
Trying to establish passion for the company and a sense of ownership
We’ve discussed (1) Principles of Digital Org transformation, (2) Agile from a business perspective and how McKinsey measure it, (3) Martin Fowlers definition of CD
Begs question, why is there no DevOps manifesto?
Who owns culture? Everyone has a tool, who’s willing to us another teams instead of their favourite?
After everything I’ve said there is a DevOps movement
It’s massive, we’re part of it.
Our key takeaway for this talk is to focus on the target objective, your end goal rather the means to get there
Forest been helping to implement many of the principles we’ve discussed since 2003, long before DevOps was coined.
Spend last minute giving an example of a recent customer success story
Scale was their number 1 issue.
Performance number 2
Most important understanding business objectives to align scalable architecture to support the growing business!
