NASA ACERO (Advanced Capabilities for Emergency Response Operations) Enabling 24-hour remote wildland fire operation
1. Advanced Capabilities for Emergency Response Operations
Enabling 24-hour remote wildland fire operation
Challenge
Wildland fires are increasing in frequency
and severity. First responders are limited by
outdated technology and there is no clear
path for new technology to be integrated
into wildland fire operations. One significant
challenge is that aerial suppression is
limited to only daytime and clear visibility
conditions.
Expected Impacts
- Ability to suppress and monitor fires 24
hours a day
- Improved information sharing for more
efficient decision making
- Safe integration of uncrewed aircraft
systems (UAS) into wildland fire
operations
-Unified technology roadmap for the
wildland fire community
Partners and/or
Participants
U.S. Forest Service

Department of Interior
Solutions
- A ConOps to provide a unified vision and
roadmap for new technology to support wildland
fire management
-Improved situation awareness, communications,
airspace management, and digital information
sharing technologies to safely integrate
uncrewed aircraft systems into operations
-Successful demonstration of these tools through
field testing with partners
Results
We will test and develop new airspace and
aircraft autonomy technologies with industry.
We will help support the transfer of these new
technologies to the wildland fire community,
commercial industry and more. This will
improve aviation operations supporting
wildland fires, and ultimately help save
property and save lives.
Next Steps
We are working with the wildland fire
community to develop our roadmap for future
wildland fire technologies
We will engage the wildland fire community
and industry in technology development and
demonstrations
