NASA High Lift Common Research Model (CRM-HL) Ecosystem
1. 14 WIND TUNNEL TESTS
High Lift Common Research Model (CRM-HL) Ecosystem
International collaboration expanding what we understand about aircraft aerodynamics
Challenge
- Need to improve how accurately we can predict
the aerodynamics of new aircraft
- Enable Certification by Analysis (CbA) where
aircraft can meet airworthiness requirements
through analytical means instead of time
consuming and expensive flight tests

model at NASA Langley Research Center
Expected Impacts
- Provide experimental data to assess the predictive
capabilities of computational tools
- Ensure we are getting accurate answers for the
right reasons
- Save millions in an aircraft development program
while also improving safety and performance
through CbA
Partners of CRM-HL Ecosystem
- NASA ARMD Transformational Tools and Technologies Project
- German Aerospace Center (DLR)
- National Office for Aerospace Studies and Research (ONERA)
- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
- European Transonic Wind Tunnel (ETW)
- Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI)
- Boeing
- Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI)
- QinetiQ
- Airbus
Solution
- Deliver community-sourced resources using computer simulations
and wind tunnel tests
- Build 8 different models of commercial aircraft, ranging in size from
2.7% to 10% of the full scale
- Test in 8 wind tunnels in 5 countries (U.S., UK, France, Germany, and
Japan) with flow conditions ranging from low-speed up to flight
Reynolds numbers
- Develop a cloud-based solution for each partner to access the data
Results
- Understand how the wind tunnel tests compare to the results of
computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods used in the computer
simulations
- Discover unknown impacts across wind tunnel tests and learn more about
how aspects, i.e., wind tunnel modeling, ice, acoustics, affect results
- Standard vocabulary and data sets to compare the results from these
various models and wind tunnel tests
Next Steps
- Conduct 14 wind tunnel tests in facilities worldwide
- Use data from the CRM-HL efforts to drive the High Lift Prediction

Astronautics (AIAA) Applied Aerodynamics Technical Committee
