Overview
Challenge
- Data in the form of electronic documents,
pictures, audio recordings, video and more are
lost or effectively unavailable through the
following:
• The use of personal, organization, and a variety
of cloud data stores
• The use of removable drives and media for long-
term storage
• Inconsistent naming conventions, information
control and security, retention policies, and
insufficient metadata
- ARMD needs a tool to collect and distribute test
data, for NASA personnel to remotely access, that
is searchable, accessible, extractable and can be
downloaded for further analysis

Solution
- Develop secure flight and ground test data storage and retrieval system,
authorized to store Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) data, to support
multi-center researchers.
- Implement zero trust architecture.
- Develop an ATDP Metadata Specification (AMS) for standardized use
• Ensure compliance with existing government and industry standards and
requirements
- Work towards compliance with NASA-STD-2831 Metadata Standard for Data
Discoverability:
• Map test data articles to a standardized NASA Data Catalog
Next Steps
Support flight and ground research collaboration among NASA centers and
partners through secure, searchable, and accessible data archive efforts.
Results
The ARMD Test Data Portal (ATDP) is a data archive that allows NASA personnel
to remotely upload and register ARMD test data, as well as to quickly search,
access, extract, time slice, and download test data for further analysis.
- ATDP is a secure system, authorized to store Controlled Unclassified
Information (CUI) data.
- ATDP Login requires multi-factor authentication.
- ATDP Metadata Specification (AMS) provides capabilities for cataloging,
search, and data discovery.
- ATDP is a replacement for the NASA Flight Data Archive (FDAS) system.
- ATDP currently supports HDF5 data
- ATDP will soon support other test data formats such as pdf, docx, csv, yaml,
TIFF, JPEG, PNG, Raw, MP4, WAV, etc.
