waiting Murasaki Shikibu published The Tale of Genji, widely renowned as the world s first
novel. The work is set in Shikibu s contemporary Heian period of Japan, in which political and
social ranks dictated society s functioning and heavy prejudices were placed on those deemed

to live primarily behind screens and closed doors only to be seen by their father and husband. It

The Fire
She smelled the ashes before she heard the screams fill the building. Burning red flames quickly

but can be applied to the audience s personal experiences. The song explores the ideas of love and
death as it illustrates the grief of losing a friend or loved one.
Throughout the song, winter is shown as a continuous metaphor used to symbolise misery. It s the
salient metaphor of the song as it is repeated and constantly referenced. The composer chose to
display winter in a more cold, lonesome and depressive manner. The surrounding cold of winter that
seems to never disperse illustrates the lack of warmth and happiness in his life. This is further
reinforced with the lack of sunlight in the winter.
The line There s no darkness or season that s in store where there will never be an end directly

Set in the 1960 s, The Help, emphasizes the societal issues affecting African Americans in the
past and shows eerily similar parallels to our society today. The 1960 s consisted of a multitude
of protests and movements preaching civil disobedience and resistance. This attitude and
behavior, led to the rise of the Civil Rights Movement which is also a major aspect of the film.
The Help, delivers a message that stresses the dangers and paranoia that may be associated with a
changing society that is focused on retaining it s original values regardless of what may be
occurring around them. Eventually change does take charge and while acceptance is not
immediate, slowly but steadily toleration does begin to take root. Released in 2011, the film
reflects the alterations in society but also displays the changes that have yet to occur. The Help,

aided African Americans in their fight to gaining full civil rights while others did not bother to
hide their disapproval and continued to believe that African Americans were inferior therefore did
not deserve civil liberties. While as a society, we have come far, there continue to be many aspects
that have yet to change and African Americans continue to face discrimination and inequality today.
