Kia ora my name is Hoki - Moana Houkamau.
I am passionate about Leadership in the classroom, in the school,
in the community and in Te Tairawhiti.
My passion is to work with Maori and Pacifica tamariki, in order to provide them
with learning programmes that will raise their achievement levels
and help them reach their full potential.

I am particularly excited about being given the opportunity to apply for the
National Aspiring Principals Programme for 2014
as I know one aspect of the programme is to look at the leadership of
colleagues in raising the achievement of students in school, with a particular
focus on
Maori and Pacifica.
Part of my leadership journey has been to take up new challenges.
HereTe Reo Maori
are some of them....
Team Leader for the Whanau Reo Maori - Te Roopu Puhi Kaiariki.
My main responsibility as team leader for Whanau Reo Rua is the delivery of
Te Reo Maori Language programmes throughout the school. Initially this was a
challenging
prospect, as all our teachers were at different levels in Te Reo maori. To deal with thi
issue a
imahi was employed to take Ataarangi classes once a week. The success of these class
has
been amazing and we now find teachers more enthusiastic and motivated to use
Te Reo Maori in their classrooms.

For the last 3 years I have been leading the Positive Behaviour 4 Learning contract a
Kaiti.
My responsibilities have been to effectively manage school wide change for behavioral
management systems, lead a school wide review of behavior practices
and to implement new positive behavior management initiatives.

orming a relationship and partnership with local Runanga has become a necessary part

corporate side of school life. Having a strong whakapaka to the region and whanau
connections
within Te Runanga o Ngati Porou & Te Runanga o Turanganui a Kiwa
Investing in local solutions by working with the Community Police
At the beginning of this year I was co opted onto the local Neighbourhood Safety
Panel as the spokesperson for Kaiti school. This is a new initiative that has been

set up by the local police in conjunction with PKaiti residents, to deal with issues

pertaining to the Kait community. My key responsibilities on this panel are to
2012 – 2015
chair the hui and act as spokes person for Kaiti school.

Networking with local community and sporting organisations
This year Kaiti school organised the Primary school waka ama regatta.
This involved 10 local and country schools and approximately 120 tamariki.
As an executive member of the Mareikura canoe club, I was able to organise this
event. Part of my responsibility was to secure the club waka and equipment for our
regatta, and co opt club members to assist in the running of this event. Through my
community connections, Sport Tairawhiti and Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa came
on board to assist with the administration and loading of waka.
The regatta was a great success and a wonderful opportunity for local and country
schools to come together, and have a day of friendly rivalry on the water.

PB4L For the last 3 years I have been leading the Positive Behaviour 4 Learning contract a Kaiti. My responsibilities have been to effectively manage school wide change for behavioral management systems, lead a school wide review of behavior practices and to implement new positive behavior management initiatives. Iwi Partnerships orming a relationship and partnership with local Runanga has become a necessary part the corporate side of school life.   • 4. Investing in local solutions by working with the Community Police At the beginning of this year I was co opted onto the local Neighbourhood Safety Panel as the spokesperson for Kaiti school. This is a new initiative that has been 3Y S set up by the local police in conjunction with PKaiti residents, to deal with issues S W A pertaining to the Kait community. My key responsibilities on this panel are to 2012 – 2015 chair the hui and act as spokes person for Kaiti school. EAR TRATEGIC LAN FOR THE PORT OF AKA MA www.wakaama.co.nz Networking with local community and sporting organisations This year Kaiti school organised the Primary school waka ama regatta. This involved 10 local and country schools and approximately 120 tamariki. As an executive member of the Mareikura canoe club, I was able to organise this event. Part of my responsibility was to secure the club waka and equipment for our regatta, and co opt club members to assist in the running of this event. Through my community connections, Sport Tairawhiti and Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa came on board to assist with the administration and loading of waka. The regatta was a great success and a wonderful opportunity for local and country schools to come together, and have a day of friendly rivalry on the water.

Regional level Executive member on Te Uranga o Te Ra regional committee for the last 10 years. 5 years as Chairperson 4 years as Secretary 2 years as Regional representative on the national body. National level Executive member on Nga Kaihoe o Aotaeroa from 2008 – 2010. I was fortunate to be part of an executive that worked with the Hiliary Sports Commission in 2009 to help formulate the first Strategic plan for Waka ama in NZ
