This document summarizes a study measuring the vulnerability of small farmers to climate change across villages in Gende Rigie Rural Kebele, Dire Dawa Administration. Measuring small farmers’ vulnerability to climate change2

This study analyzes the climate change vulnerability of small holder farmers in Genderighe kebele of Dire Dawa Administration. The purpose of the study was to generate a baseline data on the overall vulnerability of HHs in the kebele and rank/prioritize villages based on their respective level of vulnerability. In so-doing, data was collected from a total of 69 households in the 8 villages of Genderighe kebele, employing a proportionate random sampling technique. According to Temesgen et al., (2008), vulnerability to climate change in Ethiopia is highly related to poverty. Hence, the Head Count Ratio (HCR) method of poverty analysis was used in measuring the absolute level of HHs’ vulnerability to climate change in the study area. Results from this analysis revealed that 48%of the sample households in the kebele live below the poverty line implying that about 574 households were estimated to be poor and/or vulnerable to climate change. The HCR indices were also estimated for each of the 8 villages in the study kebele and were used as relative measure of vulnerability based on which villages were ranked. Thus, out of the 8 villages in Genderighe kebele, Halele, Eyidu arba and Kiyero villages have shown an HCR value of 0.78, 0.75 and 0.75 respectively. On the other hand, Haloli, Goro guda and Dieyno villages have shown a relatively smaller value of HCR (0.50, 0.43 and 0.33 respectively), while Wechali and Gend rieghie proper villages had the smallest value, that was 0.25 and 0.23 respectively. However, since these rankings are based on the relative value of HCR indices, which relied only on HHs’ level of consumption, the research team has employed a more inclusive method of vulnerability ranking, by applying a Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) that enables controlling for other socioeconomic and biophysical factors. Hence, applying a simeltaneous analysis of different vulnerability indicators classified into five classes (availability of technology, wealth, Infrastructure, Irrigation potential and frequency of drought and flood), the MCA has constructed vulnerability indices for each village, based on which villages were prioritized once again. Comparing the outcomes from the two ranking methods employed, it appears that some villages keep the same positions or successive positions, which shows almost the same output in both methods. Thus, investing in the development of the relatively underdeveloped villages, irrigation for villages with high potential and production of drought-tolerant varieties of crops and species of livestock can all reduce the vulnerability of small farmers to climate change in the study areas.

Despite the popularity of chill method in mitigating human-elephant conflict (HEC) in crops fields of areas adjacent or within unfenced protected areas ecosystem in Africa countries, there are some challenges facing application of the method resulting to food insecurity. The study aimed at examining limitation of chill method in mitigating HEC using Western Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania as a case study. Data were collected by using Survey and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods. Collected data were analysed by using statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) software. The study revealed that human elephant conflicts were a big problem in two selected villages (namely Nyamburi and Bonchugu) for about 97%. In trying to solve the problem different mitigation measures were used by the local people to prevent elephants (Loxodontaafricanaafricana) from crops fields whereas chill method despite of its challenges seems to be effectives for about 83%. Major challenges which limit/hinder chill method in mitigating human elephant conflicts includes pepper types, availability and their effectiveness in producing chocking smell; weather conditions; and changing behaviour of elephants (Loxodontaafricanaafricana).

The study analyzed female-headed and male-headed households’ participation in public agricultural extension services: The Case of Meskan Woreda, Gurage Zone, Ethiopia. The objectives were to assess participation of female-headed and male-headed farmers in major crop and livestock extension packages, and to identify determinants of participation. A multi-stage purposive sampling technique was employed to select Region, Woredas, and Kebeles. Samples were taken from four Kebeles: Wita, Yimariwacho third, Mesrak meskan and Welansho second based agro ecology using probability proportional to size sampling technique. Finally, a total of (143) sampled male (92) and female-headed households (51) were selected by using systematic random sampling method. Sampled household heads survey data were collected using pre-tested structured interview schedule, focus group discussions and key informants interview. Descriptive and Binary logistic were employed to analyze the collected survey data. Among 14 explanatory variables included in to the logit model: land size, Development agent contact frequency, and mass media exposure had positive and statistically significant while sex, age and market distance had negative and statistically significant on Farming household head’s in crop and livestock extension services. The study recommends that, enhancing efficient delivery of services and increasing young age of household head farmers in terms of equal sex participation, farm size, Development agent contact, and mass media access would improve household head farmers’ participation in public agricultural extension services.
