Naberezhnye Chelny has a rich history dating back to 1172 when it was first a village called Chelny. It was granted town status in 1930 and renamed several times before taking its current name in 1988. Today it is one of the largest towns in Tatarstan, known for being home to the massive Kamaz vehicle factory, which has made it a major industrial center. The population is nearly 600,000 people.
