The volunteer taught English, math, and cultural knowledge to 3rd graders at a school for underprivileged children in Ghana from 2011-2012. In addition to teaching, the volunteer organized extracurricular activities like sports, fundraising events, and field trips. The volunteer helped nurse students provide vaccinations to students and assisted with health screenings by taking measurements.

My volunteer time in The Street Academy
I traveled to Ghana to do some volunteer
work in the winter of 2011. I got a job at a
school that provides education for
underprivileged children.
I taught English, mathematics and cultural
knowledge for 3th graders. We also
arranged some other extra curriculum
activities for the children in our spare time.
We for example took them to visit the
Nestle factory and arranged all kinds of
sport activities and fundraising events.
Here’s my journey in pictures.
My class
I didn’t have any educational background in teaching, but still due to my ground school
and high school education I managed to teach my class in a way that most of the local
teachers couldn’t.

Extra-curriculum activities
Besides teaching, we arranged all kinds of after
school activities for example sports, such as boxing
and yard games. We also planned and executed
some fundraising events where the kids had dance
and music performances.
We also were responsible for the food shopping.
Each week we went to the food market to collect
the ingredients for school lunch.
Before the classes begun we used to gather the kids
in the classroom and do some worshiping and the
name calls.
Other tasks
I got the privilege to work with two nurse students, Heidi and Saara. They were there to
make their thesis. Together we arranged yellow fever vaccination for the students and I
helped them to chart out the students health by taking measurements of their weight and
height.

Field trip to the Nestle factory
Most of the kids had never been on a field trip, so it was very exciting for them. We also
arranged a lunch break at the spot and in the end of our tour at Nestle the kids got to taste
hot chocolate.
