5. Book and Print Orientation
6. Comprehension
7. Fluency
As a Grade 3 Teacher, these are the things
that I put into consideration as I teach
reading.
6. 1. Oral Language
My Strategy
- refers to the
knowledge and
use of the
structure,
meanings and
uses of the
language of
literacy
For example:
I use poems as a springboard on a lesson;
and I integrate role playing or dramatization
during group activities.
Exposing my Grade 3 pupils
in:
poems, jingles, finger plays, dramatization,
dialogue, story reading activities, and
games
7. 2. Phonological Awareness
My Strategies
- involve working
with rhymes,
words and
syllables.
2. I also let them say the word and then
say each syllable or sound (segmenting)
1. Let my pupils clap the number of words
in a sentence, syllables in a word, sounds
in a word (counting)
8. 3. Phonemic Awareness
My Strategy
- the ability to
identify the
phonemes
(smallest unit of
sound) of spoken
language, and how
they can be
separated,
blended, and then
manipulated
For example:
- I let my pupil say the first sound in sit, mop
- Say an. Put /c/ in front of an. Say the word.
Pupils can use letters to manipulate
phonemes and apply their knowledge of
segmenting and blending when they
read the new words.
9. 4. Alphabet Knowledge
My Strategies
- refers to
recognizing,
naming, and
sounding out all the
upper and lower
case letters of the
alphabet
1. Let the pupils identify the letters of the
alphabet
2. Let them name each letter
3. Let them sound each letter (Filipino); sound
each consonant (English)
4. Let them write all the letters
5. Let them give an example that begins
with a specific given letter.
10. 5. Book and Print
Orientation
My Strategies
- refers to knowing
and being
acquainted with
how books and
how print works
1. Let the pupils hold a book and let them identify
the parts of a book like front and back cover and
its pages
2. Let them flip the pages of the book sequentially,
one page at a time
3. Point to them where the story begins
4. Model looking at the left page before looking at
the right page
5. Make book reading a habit during lunch break
11. 6. Comprehension
My Strategies
- an active process
of constructing
meaning from text
1. Encourage cooperative learning
practices for reading
2. Use graphic organizers that will help
them draw connections and meanings.
3. Design questions that address to their level
4. Provide feedbacking on their response
5. Allow them to elaborate on one another’s
responses
12. 7. Fluency
My Strategies
- the accurate and
rapid naming or
reading of letters,
sounds, words and
sentences For example:
1. Reading with a model reader
2. Choral reading
3. Partner reading
1. Provide pupils with opportunities for repeated
oral reading that includes support and feedback
2. Determine the pupil’s reading levels and
ensure the text are match to them.
