Cleft lip and palate is the most common birth defect affecting the facial region, occurring in about 1 in 800 births in India which amounts to around 45,000 new cases per year. In Karnataka, it is estimated that between 4000 to 4200 new cleft babies are born annually, with around 800 born in Mysore District alone. Cleft lip and palate can cause physical issues like difficulties with feeding, speech, and dental function as well as social stigma, and requires comprehensive treatment from birth through adulthood to address these challenges.
