This document is a thesis submitted by Noelle Dunne for the degree of Master of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation at Trinity College Dublin. The thesis assessed the ecological quality of tidal freshwater sections of transitional waters in the Republic of Ireland using macroinvertebrate communities. A variety of rivers ranging from polluted to pristine were sampled using different methods. Widely used biotic indices were calculated and statistical analyses were performed to determine the impact of salinity on macroinvertebrate communities. The results showed that salinity greatly impacts community structure and that a multivariate index is needed to fully assess the ecological quality of transitional waters.
