Pray For Us Sinners Film Evaluation
1. Evaluation 1: In what ways does your
media product use, develop, or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2.
3. Title of film
Pray For Us Sinners’ is the name of our thriller which we came up with as a group
due to the links which it has with religion, something that we include in our thriller
and is a main focus point as it is set around a Church. We wanted to involve sin in
our title somehow because it connotes with bad actions happening, in our thrillers
case a murder and kidnapping. We also thought that it was quite a catchy title
which people would be able to remember and would be able to link it back to the
film. An idea which we considered at first was ‘Never Ending Nightmare’ but we
decided against this because using the time phrase ‘never ending’ makes it sound
unrealistic because the nightmare will end eventually during the conclusion of the
film.
4. Setting/location
The first location we used was a house, we used this to film the very
beginning of our opening I.e. The nightmare and flashbacks. We used a
church graveyard as our main location as we believe that they are quite
a spooky place to be. Also, it fitted in well with our story line. The
church had an aged look to it which added to the atmosphere as there
is history and heritage linked to it. As churches and graveyards are
symbolic for death and funerals, we thought that this could work really
well as there is a murder in our film
5. Costumes and props
In our thriller, a knife is used in one of the flashbacks. This knife is
covered in blood showing the audience that it has been recently used
to injure or kill someone. It is used in our film to add tension to the
thriller as it grabs peoples attention and keeps them engaged. The use
of the knife shows the audience that violence is involved at some point
in the film.
6. Camerawork and editing
A variety of different shots were used in the production of our film such as high and low angle shots,
showing both power and vulnerability. We tried to include as many shot angles and types as possible to
increase the professional look we have tried to achieve. When filming, we filmed a lot more content from
different angles so that we would have a lot to choose from when it came to editing. This has helped as
now we have a finished product what has a variety of shots included.
7. Title font and style
The title font is called “monotype corisva” it is coloured white with a
black border to make it stand out from the surrounding scenery. The
white colour suggests purity and is a basic colour.
8. Story
‘Prey for us sinners’ is a film where the main character, Daisy, murdered
her partner, who then has a nightmare with flashbacks to the moment
she killed him. She wakes up and visits his grave holding a photo of
him. She then sees something that scares her and runs to try and find a
way into the church for safety. Having failed to do this, she hides and
prays for forgiveness as she fears for her life.
9. Genre and how the opening suggests it
The opening to our film shows a shot of a knife covered in blood hitting
the floor in slow motion. The slow motion adds to the tense
atmosphere and creates suspense. The blood covered knife helps
suggest a horror thriller as the blood can represent death and the knife
representing murder and violence. It horrifies the audience and creates
a feared atmosphere.
10. How the character is introduced
The main character, Daisy, played by Damita Dickerson is introduced in
the opening shots of the opening in the bedroom, experiencing the
night mare which flash backs to the murder. She is properly introduced
when she wakes up, prays, and gets ready to visit the grave. She is
introduced in this way because it sets up the atmosphere for later on,
she is introduced slowly to build up tension
