The Canadian government implemented a policy of assimilating Indigenous children by sending them to residential schools run by churches and funded by the government. The schools aimed to suppress Indigenous traditions and have the children adopt European lifestyles to eventually eliminate Indigenous cultures. Over 150,000 Indigenous children were removed from their communities and forced to attend the schools from the 19th century to 1996. At the schools, students faced poor conditions, abuse, and were discouraged from speaking their native languages or practicing their cultures.
