Portfolio Requirements
Task #1: Curate Portfolio Artifacts.
An important part of reflection involves reviewing and selecting samples of your writing across the semester. “Any writing” means anything you’ve written for English 101. It might be notes you made in class. It might be all of the major assignments with rough drafts. It might be one or two homework assignments that you felt had a big influence on your learning this semester. It could even be all of the homework assignments put together in a way that you think demonstrates learning outcomes.
Of course, learning is not always captured in successes. While you will predominately select writing that illustrates success in learning outcomes in the portfolio, you will also select at least one instructive failure, one example of writing that represents an outcome you have struggled with and will continue to work on. Often a critical incident with writing, or an instructive failure, prompts the best learning. With that in mind, use the following guidelines to curate a portfolio:
· Select artifacts that demonstrate mastery of one or two learning outcomes in each goal (see below). Remember, any writing you did for class counts.
· Select one artifact that represents your struggle with one learning outcome.

In your personal, academic, and professional life, it will be important to establish and reflect on goals, to periodically examine what you have accomplished, and to ask critical questions about your learning: What did I hope to accomplish in this class/project/ experience? This project is the culminating writing and research project of the semester, building on the skills you have developed throughout the semester. In a sense, many restrictions are gone: you must define the current issue you write about, you must define the audience you are writing to, and you must determine-to a larger extent- how to best organize and present information. You should draw on the rhetorical concepts we discussed early in the semester (logos, pathos, ethos, kairos, doxa) to consider how to most effectively craft this essay.
A proposal presents a problem and a solution or solutions to that problem. For this essay, the problem must be related to a current issue of your choice; you may choose a topic from one of the class case studies or a different topic of your own. It must, however, have been relevant in the last six months. Drawing on the sources you presented in your annotated bibliography- and substituting other sources as necessary- you will persuade your audience that a problem exists and that your solutions(s) is best, at least for the time being.
The following process may be useful as you create your proposal:
· Choose an issue to research. Make sure it is timely (relevant within the last six months) and something you care about, since you will spend a lot of time working with this topic. This can be from the class case studies or be entirely different. Try to make the issue as specific as possible. For instance, instead of “refugee camps,” narrow this down to something like: “impact of U.S. medical aid in refugee camps.” This is much more specific and manageable.
· Brainstorm a list of questions you have about the topic, problems you see others defining or that you identify yourself, and possible solutions to this problem.
· Explore the topic via research in your annotated bibliography.
· Define your audience- who would be interested in this issue and why? How much new information will you be offering them? Are they likely to already agree or disagree with your perspective on the topic?
· Return to your list and define a specific problem(s) you want to persuade readers exists and a specific solution(s) you have developed to address this problem(s).
· Create an outline of your essay to map out how you will organize the information.

A rhetorical analysis assignment usually asks you to read two articles and write a paper that accomplishes
three things: 1) identifies the ideas each author is trying to communicate; 2) analyzes the techniques each
author uses to accomplish his or her purpose; and 3) compares and contrasts the authors’ approaches. The
assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. This
handout provides suggestions to assist you in the process.
Topic Selection and Research
Students are typically asked to select a topic and two articles that address that topic. Select a topic related to
your area of study or that you find especially interesting and brainstorm related issues. Take care not to make
your topic too broad, and then follow these steps:
Search the library databases to find a good selection of articles on your topic. Don’t waste time! Ask for
help if your searches yield no results. The research librarians provide valuable assistance.
It will be to your advantage if the articles you select come from sources with distinctly different
readerships (e.g., Forbes and The Nation; Audubon and The Washington Times).
Ideally, the writers of both articles should make clear, assertive arguments. Research reports, clinical
studies, or other informative writing will likely be less useful to you than more persuasive writing, as
the authors of the former tend to utilize fewer obvious rhetorical devices.
Avoid shorter articles, as they offer little for analysis.
Determining Each Author’s Purpose
Once you have selected your two articles, you are ready to begin your pre-writing activities. The
following suggestions should help you begin.
Audience analysis: For each article, examine the entire print or electronic publication. By scanning the other
articles, editor’s page, graphics, and ads, you will be able to make an informed judgment regarding the
demographics, values, and personal and political interests of the audience. Determining the overall aim of the
publication should help you consider what the article itself may be intended to accomplish.
Read with rhetorical awareness: First, read each article all the way through without making notes or
annotations. Ask yourself about the writer’s intentions, and how the writer’s choices affect you as a reader.
Often you can determine the rhetorical purpose of an author by gauging your intellectual and emotional
reactions to the presentation. If you are angry or upset, for example, the author has achieved an effect through
the use of particular rhetorical devices.
Identify the rhetorical tactics: Next, read the texts closely and make annotations with the aim of highlighting

than being a binary variable, you-attitude appears to be gradable, and an infor-
mal student assessment of the you-attitude expressed in ten versions of the same
passage suggests that the various strategies for enhancing the you-attxtude conveyed
by a text appear to have a cumulative effect, so that a greater sense of you-attitude
IS created when more strate^es are used.

tools to examine these concepts than the often fuzzy, pop-psychology

They propose an effectiveness measure for husiness letters that is
hased on the conversation maxims described in Grice (1975) and
the politeness principles developed hy Lakoff (1973; 1977) and

(1989) complain that "students aren't told how one uses language

cient detail the very politeness locutions with which linguistic

than a decade, it is still true that linguistic research has had rela-
tively little impact on business communication research and
teaching and we have little explicit advice to offer students on
how to achieve qualities such as you-attitude.
My main purpose is to suggest how the teaching of you-attitude
can be enhanced by using politeness theories, case grammar, and

This project is the culminating writing and research project of the semester, building on the skills you have developed throughout the semester. In a sense, many restrictions are gone: you must define the current issue you write about, you must define the audience you are writing to, and you must determine-to a larger extent- how to best organize and present information. You should draw on the rhetorical concepts we discussed early in the semester (logos, pathos, ethos, kairos, doxa) to consider how to most effectively craft this essay.
A proposal presents a problem and a solution or solutions to that problem. For this essay, the problem must be related to a current issue of your choice; you may choose a topic from one of the class case studies or a different topic of your own. It must, however, have been relevant in the last six months. Drawing on the sources you presented in your annotated bibliography- and substituting other sources as necessary- you will persuade your audience that a problem exists and that your solutions(s) is best, at least for the time being.
The following process may be useful as you create your proposal:
· Choose an issue to research. Make sure it is timely (relevant within the last six months) and something you care about, since you will spend a lot of time working with this topic. This can be from the class case studies or be entirely different. Try to make the issue as specific as possible. For instance, instead of “refugee camps,” narrow this down to something like: “impact of U.S. medical aid in refugee camps.” This is much more specific and manageable.
· Brainstorm a list of questions you have about the topic, problems you see others defining or that you identify yourself, and possible solutions to this problem.
· Explore the topic via research in your annotated bibliography.
· Define your audience- who would be interested in this issue and why? How much new information will you be offering them? Are they likely to already agree or disagree with your perspective on the topic?

· Create an outline of your essay to map out how you will organize the information.

assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. This
handout provides suggestions to assist you in the process.
Topic Selection and Research
Students are typically asked to select a topic and two articles that address that topic. Select a topic related to
your area of study or that you find especially interesting and brainstorm related issues. Take care not to make
your topic too broad, and then follow these steps:
Search the library databases to find a good selection of articles on your topic. Don’t waste time! Ask for
help if your searches yield no results. The research librarians provide valuable assistance.
It will be to your advantage if the articles you select come from sources with distinctly different
readerships (e.g., Forbes and The Nation; Audubon and The Washington Times).
Ideally, the writers of both articles should make clear, assertive arguments. Research reports, clinical
studies, or other informative writing will likely be less useful to you than more persuasive writing, as
the authors of the former tend to utilize fewer obvious rhetorical devices.
Avoid shorter articles, as they offer little for analysis.
Determining Each Author’s Purpose
Once you have selected your two articles, you are ready to begin your pre-writing activities. The

Audience analysis: For each article, examine the entire print or electronic publication. By scanning the other
articles, editor’s page, graphics, and ads, you will be able to make an informed judgment regarding the
demographics, values, and personal and political interests of the audience. Determining the overall aim of the
publication should help you consider what the article itself may be intended to accomplish.
Read with rhetorical awareness: First, read each article all the way through without making notes or
annotations. Ask yourself about the writer’s intentions, and how the writer’s choices affect you as a reader.

passage suggests that the various strategies for enhancing the you-attxtude conveyed
by a text appear to have a cumulative effect, so that a greater sense of you-attitude
IS created when more strate^es are used.

tools to examine these concepts than the often fuzzy, pop-psychology

They propose an effectiveness measure for husiness letters that is
hased on the conversation maxims described in Grice (1975) and
the politeness principles developed hy Lakoff (1973; 1977) and
Brown and Levinson (1978). Similarly, Hagge and Kostelnick
(1989) complain that "students aren't told how one uses language

cient detail the very politeness locutions with which linguistic
diplomacy is conveyed in the real world" (p. 334). After more
than a decade, it is still true that linguistic research has had rela-
tively little impact on business communication research and
teaching and we have little explicit advice to offer students on
how to achieve qualities such as you-attitude.
My main purpose is to suggest how the teaching of you-attitude
can be enhanced by using politeness theories, case grammar, and
information structure. This article begins.

Tesla's stock has a positive trend over the past year. The stock has ranged from a low of $187.06 a year ago to a high of $883.09 on January 26, 2021 (Yahoo, 2021a). Tesla's shares have skyrocketed more than 20,000% since it went public in 2010, with its price rising more than 700% over the last year (Levin, 2021). This growth has made Tesla the most valuable car company in the world. There are many reasons for this epic growth. After years of not turning a profit for years, Tesla has finally shown a profit for the last 6 quarters. Tesla also beat estimates by producing more than 500,000 vehicles and selling its fifth vehicle, Modle Y, ahead of schedule (Levin, 2021). In addition, Tesla was added to the S&P 500 on November 16th, 2020, which helped the share price spike. These are the main drivers of the success of Teslas stock over the past 12 months.
