5. Biography
• Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is the Bangladeshi international cricketer
with the role of All-Rounder, and the current captain of the One
Day Internationals for Bangladesh national cricket team.
• Mortaza was born in the district of Narail in south-west
Bangladesh. He also loves playing football and badminton besides
cricket.
• In between playing cricket, Mortaza got himself admitted into
Department of Philosophy at the Jahangirnagar University in
2003-04 session for his bachelor's degree.
•His bowling is now his main attribute and his pace has gained him
the nickname of the "Narail Express".
6. Biography
• Mortaza has been described as an open and animated character
who enjoys motorcycling.
• He is very popular in his home town, leading to him being dubbed
their "Prince of Hearts".
• At Govt. Victoria College, Narail, Mortaza met Sumona Haque
Shumi, whom he married in 2006. He has a daughter and a son.
His daughter's name is Humaira Mortaza. He also becomes the
father of a son on 5th October 2014 named Sahil Mortaza.
8. Career
• Mortaza is one of the most successful pace bowlers to have
emerged from Bangladesh. Under the recommendation of Andy
Roberts (a former West Indian fast bowler), Mortaza was drafted
into the Bangladesh A team.
• After one match for Bangladesh A Team, Mortaza made
his Test debut on 8 November 2001 against Zimbabwe in
the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
• In 2006, Mortaza was the world's highest wicket taker in ODIs,
collecting 49 wickets. The haul was the most ever in a calendar
year by a Bangladeshi, and 17th most for anyone.
9. Career
• He became the “Man of the Match” in his side's shock victory
over India in the 2007 World Cup taking 4/38.
• Although primarily a bowler, Mortaza is an aggressive batsman as
demonstrated by his high Test match strike rate of 67.25.
• Mortaza was appointed captain after the T20 World Cup in the
Caribbean.
10. Career
• Mashrafe had suffered a lot of injuries throughout his career,
especially on both of his knees and ankles.
• During the Bangladesh Premier League T20I Tournament in 2012,
Mortaza was made the captain of Dhaka Gladiators where he took
ten wickets from eleven matches and lead his team to victory.
• After the 2015 World Cup, Mashrafe led his team to ODI series
wins against Pakistan (3-0) and India (2-1) at home.
• Because of his tremendous performance and captaincy,
Bangladesh Cricket Team is now standing at 6th Position in ICC
World Rankings.
14. National Team Captain
• In June 2009, the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) relieved
Mohammad Ashraful of the captaincy so that he could focus on
his batting and so, Mortaza was appointed captain for the tours of
the West Indies and Zimbabwe.
• In July 2009, Bangladesh toured the West Indies. Mortaza's
captaincy was off to a winning start in his first Test in charge when
Bangladesh beat the West Indies.
• Mortaza's injury prevented him from taking part in the remainder
of the tour and his replacement, Shakib Al Hasan, led Bangladesh
win the Test and ODI series respectively.
16. Playing Style
• Mortaza uses his aggressive bowling to challenge
batsmen. Although a naturally aggressive player, his accurate
bowling has led to comparisons with Australian fast-bowler, Glenn
McGrath.
• He has been described by commentators as having "a strong
sturdy physique ... sheer pace and stamina with an aggressive
frame of mind“.
• Mortaza's batting is characterised by a reluctance to get in line
with the bowling and he prefers to take a step towards square leg
to facilitate his powerful shots.
17. Injuries
• He has suffered a plethora of injuries since 2007.
• Since then he has suffered further injury, and has undergone four
surgeries on his left knee and three on his right, and three on his
ankles. In total, he has undergone ten surgeries.
18. Mashrafe Mortaza got severely injured on his knee during
the Bangladesh vs West Indies Test Series in 2009.
19. International Awards
• Mashrafe bin Mortaza had been awarded as “The Man of the
Match” in only one test match against India where the result was
drawn. Furthermore, he won more “The Man of the Match” awards
in 12 ODIs and 1 T20I.
• Also, he was awarded “Player of the Series” awards in two series
– Bangladesh in Kenya and Bangladesh in Zimbabwe – in the
season 2006/07. Bangladesh won both the series 3-0 and 3-1
respectively.
21. Conclusion
• On 4th April 2017, Mashrafe announced his retirement from
twenty20 internationals after Sri Lanka tour.
• Mashrafe played his last T20I on 6 April 2017 against Sri Lanka
in R. Premadasa Stadium.
• Though he was dismissed for naught, Mashrafe took a wicket in
the match and still guided his team to victory in his last T20I outing.
