Location
Turkey is a large
peninsula that bridges
the continents of
Europe and Asia.
Turkey is surrounded
on three sides by the
Black sea,
the Mediterranean
Sea and the
Aegean Sea.
And Istanbul, the
largest city in Turkey,
is built on land in the
Bosphorus seaway.
History
• Turkey is home to one of the
earliest settlements in the world.
• About 4,000 years ago, the Hittites
created an empire in the central part
of what is now called Turkey in
Anatolia.
• The city of Constantinople was
conquered by the Ottomans in 1453
and Turkey became part of the
Ottoman Empire.
• In 1923, the Turkish Grand National
Assembly declared Turkey a republic.
The city formally became Istanbul in
1923.
Food & Drinks
 Turkish food is really famous all
around the world. The city of
Gaziantep in the South East of
Turkey is a gastronomy city and
it has delicious food and
desserts.
 Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert
pastry made of layers of filo,
filled with pistachios or
walnuts.
 Kebabs are various cooked
meat dishes, the classic shish
kebab. They consist of meat,
chicken and sometimes
vegetables.
Culture & Tradition
The Turkish Hamam
This tradition stemming from the
Roman public bathhouses and
modified by the Ottomans, has
split into two. Certain Turkish
baths are touristic orientated
because westerners prefer to
wear swimming costumes while
others cater for the local
community in the tradition way
and this is seen in the weekly
practise of women only day.
Evil Eye: The
Nazar Boncugu
In direct disbelief of Islamic
traditions, the Nazar
Boncugu, also known as
the evil eye is in offices,
homes, in transport and
businesses. Turks believe
this talisman wards off evil
and these days, as well as
featuring heavily in Turkish
culture, it is one of the top
recommended souvenirs
to buy.
Turkish's Special
Drink: Turkish Coffee
Turkish coffee is prepared in a
cezve, a special small pot with
a long handle. Traditionally,
Turkish coffee without foam
is simply unacceptable.
Served with Turkish
delight in pleasant cups.
A glass of water goes
well with it :)

Interesting Tips About Turkey
Istanbul is the only city in the world
located on two continents: Europe and
Asia.
Göbeklitepe (in the province of Şanlıurfa),
which is on the Unesco World Heritage
List, is claimed to date back to 9.600-7.300
BC, at least 11,600 years ago.
In every Turkish home, carpets and rugs
sit proudly on the floors. With elaborate
decoration, the handmade carpets have
also become popular holiday souvenirs.
A new type of plant is discovered every 10
days. And Turkey’s 10,000 plant and 80,000
animal species help rank the country
among the world’s 35 biodiversity
hotspots.
Oil wrestling is the national sport. The
spectacle of two bulky men stripped to the
waist, doused with olive oil, and grappling
under the hot Thracian sun is a 654-year-
old sporting tradition and sight to behold.
