3. History of Canarsie
• Canarsie is a neighborhood in the southern part of
Brooklyn. Canarsie is surrounded by the neighborhoods
of East Flatbush, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach,
and East New York.
• Canarsie was built on swamps near Jamaica Bay. It was
a fishing village through the 1800’s, until pollution
killed the oysters and edible fish there. In the 1920’s,
Southern Italian immigrants with Jews settled in the
area.
• Canarsie means“fenced land” or “fort." in the Lenape
Native American language.
4. Canarsie 1950 - 1990
• Canarsie's population reached three thousand people,
it was a suburban community where everyone knew
everyone else.
• The Canarsie Courier is the oldest weekly publication
in Brooklyn.The Canarsie Courier was in heavy
circulation during the mid 1900's.
• During the 1990’s, much of Canarsie’s white
population left to Staten Island, Long Island, and
Queens, part of a national urban phenomenon referred
to by many as “white flight".

6. Canarsie Now
• Canarsie has many one and two family homes,
although there are three large public housing
developments and a number of small apartment
buildings scattered throughout the neighborhood.
• It is a combination of a small suburban community and
part of a major city.
• Canarsie’s population is mostly Black, Italian and
Jewish. Jewish population in Canarsie in recent years
has been steadily shrinking.
• The Canarsie Pier is still heavily used for fishing and
recreation.

• The Brooklyn Terminal is a place where
people shop for produce, seafood and live
plants.
• The Brooklyn Terminal Market opened for
business in 1942. Located on Foster Avenue
between East 83rd and East 87th Streets.
• The market has earned a fabulous reputation
for offering excellent quality at great prices.
• Recently the market was expanded to include
new retail stores such as BJ's Wholesale Club,
Planet Fitness and several franchise
restaurants.

Canarsie is the only place I have lived. I
am a student at Benjamin Banneker. In my
spare time, I enjoy writing poetry, rapping,
playing basketball and hanging out with
friends. One of my favorite places to visit in
Canarsie is Seaview Park. I love Canarsie
because the people are friendly and caring.
Canarsie is a very peaceful community.
