passengers over a
distance of water so
they can enjoy the
sights, activities, and
relaxation.
• They even visit our
Port – Port Saint John
• These passengers are
visiting the Atlantic
Canada/New England
region. Can you point
out this area on a
map?

6. History of cruise
tourism in Saint
John
•Today most of the world’s largest cruise lines call
Saint John.
•Back in 1989 the first large cruise ship, Cunard
Princess, arrived here. The ship had planned to
visit the tropical island of Bermuda but it was
diverted here (on purpose) due to a hurricane
heading to Bermuda.

welcomed its first cruise ship in June 2009.

11. What attracts cruise lines to
Southern New Brunswick?
The Bay of Fundy!
• It has the highest tides in the world!
• Twice daily, 100 billion tons of seawater flows into the
Low Tide
rocky bay.
• The water height can increase and decrease by as much
as 14 metres between low and high tides! That’s about
the same as a four-storey building!
• It takes about 6 hours to go from high to low!
Low Tide

13. How do tides work?
The water in the Bay
of Fundy is pulled by
a gravitational force
created by the
movement of the
sun and moon. The
pull of water is
called a ‘tide.’
When the water is
coming in it creates
“high” tide (when it
reaches its peak).
When the water is
going out, it creates
“low” tide” (and
therefore more
beach or shoreline).
