This music video treatment proposes shooting a performance-based video of a band playing the song "Vertigo" by The Libertines. The video will include various shots of the band performing the song in a garage rehearsal space, as well as "backstage" shots showing the band hanging out together. Throughout the video, the camera work and editing will match the fast pace of the song, using quick cuts and montages. 4. Treatment
• This video will be a performance based video of my band performing “Vertigo” by The
Libertines. We’ll shoot a minimum of five takes of the song, all from different angles and
shot types in my garage which is our rehearsal space. Because the pace of the song is quite
fast, the camera will always be moving and there will be lots of quick cuts to match the pace
of the song (following the conventions of music videos in the Indie Rock genre)and capture
it’s energy. The shots themselves will be a combination of performance and like ‘backstage’
shots of us hanging about, kicking a football about and drinking etc. This will give the video a
slight narrative to it because it’s like a day in the life of the band. This will also establish the
band and their visual image and style.
• Before the song starts, there will be an establishing shot of a house from a high angle, and
then an extreme close of a needle being dropped on a record. The camera will then slowly
go out of focus and the song will begin. This is to set the scene in a way. By having a record
player in the opening shots is also a slight reference to the rise of popularity of vinyl in
recent years.
• As the guitars start, the camera will cut to a high angle shot of the band from a wall cut
quickly to a low angle mid-long shot of them in the rehearsal space. There will be a
combination of musical equipment and domestic furniture here. As the first verse starts
there will be a montage of shots (mostly low angle)of the performance and the band in-
between takes and throughout the day. This is to promote the band and the song as well as
to familiarise the audience with the group. These shots will include a medium close up pan
of them kicking a football around the rehearsal space, a long shot track of them walking to
the park and a long shot of us sitting and chatting. The montage will be fast and cut with
longer shots of the performance matching the beat of the verse until the first chorus begins.
This is to build hype and give the video a gig feel to it.

6. • As the chorus kicks in, the camera will cut to a low angle, medium close up pan of the band performing. This will cut
to a low angle close up of the singer before finally cutting to a long shot of the group. The idea here is to show the
band and promote the artist. Audiences will familiarise with the group and connect more with the music. The shots
will be edited to change in time with the song’s rhythm and pace adding to the tracks flow. Because the shots are
longer and the pace is slower, this allows the audience to focus more on the lyrics and the music.
• Then when the instrumental starts, there then will be a montage of extreme close up performance shots of the band
and their instruments mixed with shots of the band earlier in the day. The use of extreme close ups and fast editing
follows the codes and conventions of music videos in the Indie genre. The editing will be really fast because the
speed of the music is fast. This will entice the audience and keep them interested in the video.
• The Camera will then cut to a mid shot of the band performing as the second verse begins. Low angle pans of the
band will be cut quickly in-between close ups of the singer and the guitarist singing and playing their guitars. This will
happen throughout the second verse until the third line when the camera will go behind the band and show the
performance from behind. These shots will give a 360 degree feel to the video as well as show the band in a more
visually interesting way.
• As the chorus repeats, and the pace briefly slows down, there will be a slow long shot of the band talking around a
table. There will be a mixture of domestic furniture and musical equipment in the mise en scene. This is to add to
the narrative of the video with the story being a day in the life of this group. A montage of performance and the
group walking through the city will follow the lyrics through the chorus until the last line where there will be a close
up of the singer and then a long shot of the performance. These shots will help set the scene as well as giving the
band and the music and urban vibe.
• Following this will be a fast montage of extreme close ups of the guitars as the solo/instrumental starts. This is to
focus the audiences attention on the music and the energetic performance style of the band. As the instrumental
finishes there will be a long shot of the band and then a close up of the drummer before the final verse. As there are
no lyrics, the camera can focus on the instruments rather than the singers. These shots will also connote the genre of
music as well as establish the style of the band.
• As the final part of the song starts, there will be a fast combination of narrow pans of the band in the performance
space and a mixture of medium and extreme close up shots of each band member performing in time. These shots
show the performance and gives the video a gig feel to it. On the third line of the verse there will be a medium close
up of the singer in the garage cutting quickly to a two shot of the frontmen and then a long shot of the band as the
song finishes. This will be a longer cut and the camera will stay on the band for a pause before the music finishes.

7. • The camera will then cut to a long shot of the band sitting around a
table in a living room. A record will be spinning on a record player on
the table and the camera will slowly zoom and focus on the record
until it stops. These shots will round off the narrative and give a nice
end to the video.
