Narrative theory suggests that stories follow a pattern of equilibrium being disrupted by an event, then the protagonist working to regain a new equilibrium, as described by Todorov. Barthes identified 5 codes that help readers make sense of narratives. Levi-Strauss's theory of binary opposites, such as good/evil, also informs narrative analysis. Genre theory categorizes media texts by their content and style, such as films being horror or comedy genres, with each genre having distinguishing codes and conventions. More information on audience theory is needed.
