The music video by Eminem focuses on the abandoned areas of Detroit where he grew up. It shows the decline of the local manufacturing industries and standards of living. Eminem walks through the distorted neighborhoods fighting his personal demons as referenced in the song lyrics. The video depicts the area and residents realistically without glamorization, in a style meant to match the somber mood of the song.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Plot and Messages.
There seems to be no specific plot into the
video but it has a very strong concept. It
focuses on the area of Detroit where Eminem
grew up. As we can see in the video the area’s
manufacturing industries are abandoned and
the life standards have significantly fall.
Eminem walks around his old distorted area
and fights with his own personal demons as
referred to his lyrics.

WM
4. Genre Conventions.
The Artist: Unlike most of his counterparts, he is
represented as more modest , way less glamorous
and a loner in this video. Although he is the main
subject on most of the camera shots , the way
everything is framed make them quite memorable
and it also focuses on the residents of the area in
many shots. Moreover, although the video focuses
on the hardships of the “hood life”, in the same time
does not promote the “thug life”, which has been
one of the main themes closely bound to rap and life
in urban areas. The clothing is typical to rap artists.
The singer wears baggy sport clothes and a baseball
hat( all from well known brands). He also has
several tattoos and a silver jewellery. However , his
outfits are far more modest and simple that the
typical career rapper .
5. Locations:
The video clip is mainly filmed in urban
industrial areas ( you can tell by the
gratifies and the streets), and has some
bits of performance by Eminem, which is
very common for rap music videos.
However, the urban areas there are in
complete destruction and there are
elements of depression, thus the video
lacks the glamour and glossy look other
videos of the same genre have and is
more realistic and greedy.
Lighting : The lighting is very important
for the creation of atmosphere. Is quite
low and dark and highlights the sorrow
the artist feels which is also referenced in
the lyrics.
6. Editing: The editing unlike most music
videos is not very fast paced and it simply
transits from one shot to another using
cuts. Moreover, there are no special
effects which keeps the video in the of
realism.
Camera Shots: The shots are very
significant for this music video clip. The
singer is mainly framed in extreme long
shots with very few people surrounding
him, that indicates loneliness and solitude
which perfectly ties with the lyrics.
Moreover, although in most shots the
main focus is on the artist, the area is
highlighted in the frame, and the camera
regularly cuts different people , which are
the residents of the area.
7. Representation of social groups.
The people represented are the
inhabitants of Detroit.They are
apparently working and under class,
which is very typical of this area.
However, they are presented quite
realistically as ordinary , in low incomes
and struggling for survival. The image we
get from the area is that it is very diverse.
However, the residents of colour , are not
represented as “gangstas” and they do
not seem to follow the “thug life”
archetype , which is glamorised in Hip
Hop, Rap and RnB music.
9. Plot and messages.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA8v3B1SxR0
This song is broken down into five sections:
Part I. Jesus Of Suburbia: This is an introduction of the character and tells
about his home life.
Part II. City Of The Damned: This takes place in a 7/11 parking lot where he
got into a fight and first realized he hated his friends and home: "The 7/11
where I was taught, the motto was a lie, it says home is where the heart is,
but everyone's heart doesn't beat the same." The lyric, "At the end of
another lost highway," refers to the group of kids who hang out under the
highway where once again he doesn't fit in.
Part III. I Don't Care: This is where he becomes an outcast hating everyone
and everything, and also in the story this is where St. Jimmy (a character
Jesus created to heal the pain of a lost girlfriend) ties in, saying he hates
everything now. This is where he considers leaving home.
Part IV. Dearly Beloved: Not much is known on this part. It's believed to be
the peaceful, yet hard twilight between anger and happiness where you are
content.
Part V. Tales From Another Broken Home: This is where Jesus just gives up
and leaves. He doesn't know where he's going, but he's just going far away:
"Running away from pain when you've been victimized." This is where he's
leaving everyone that hated and hurt him, sort of starting over and beginning
a new life. (thanks, Zach - Oklahoma City, OK, for above 2)
10. Genre conventions.
The artist:The band appears on live
performance, as in most music videos of
this genre. They do not interfere straight
into the video and the plot , but they are
shown through aTV screen , usually into
the main character’s room ( this indicates
his musical preferences).The artists are
dressed in typical punk rock fashion :
black clothing, colourful accessories such
as punk ties , they have lot tattoos and
they have haircuts typical of punks.
11. Locations:The action is set in urban
locations , which very common for
punk rock videos.The people featured
in the video are all young , so they are
framed in their “natural” spots, such as
house parties , the streets or chilling in
urban places skating and drawing
gratifies on the wall.
Lighting:The lighting is quite bright
from times to times and usually its not
natural but superficial, coloured in acid
shades , which fits with the punk rock
genre conventions and fashion.
12. Editing:The editing has a very fast pace and
frequently cuts the shots with blades , some
times is deliberately using fast motion
accompanied by the appropriate lighting to
indicate edgy mood or the use of drugs and
disraption. Apart from special lighting , edgy
shots and editing , no further special effects
have been used.
Camera shots:The camera uses many high
and low angles, uses some fast paced pans
and edgy and steep movements , again it fits
with the reasons mentioned in the editing
section . Moreover there are quite a lot of
close ups , usually to connote the character’s
emotional state.
13. Representation of Social Groups.
The vast majority of people represented , are
white young people of not clear class
background , but all of them belonging the
punk movement.They are stereotypically
represented as reckless and irresponsible
teenagers, that abuse alcohol and drugs,
partying or skating, chilling in urban areas
and drawing gratifies. However, like typical
punks they are anti conformist and do not
comply with social norms and values.
Moreover, male gaze is used in a few shot
sexualising women and this is supported by
their clothing which is quite provocative.

GKrE6E8
A music video for the trip hop song
features two lovers or friends, one
played by Jaime King and the other
played by Lana Del Rey. As the storyline
progresses, one of the lovers
commit suicide by jumping from a cliff .
It explores themes of homosexuality ,
depression, suicide and love bounds.
16. Genre Conventions.
The Artist: Lana Del Rey , embodies the
main theme of the music video and
focuses on self projection. There are also
bits of performance which is only her
singing. She is dressed in a simple but also
stunning way ,mostly in white, which
connotes innocence and fits with the
dressing of angels as portrayed in most
art forms ( she is committing suicide in the
video so she is about to pass in the
afterlife) , it also fits the alternative indie
fashion archetypes.
17. Locations: The locations are quite
simple, mostly woods, gardens ,
streets, bridges etc…which are the
norm for low budget indie videos, it
also resembles heaven in a few
aspects.
Lighting:The lighting is low and quite
atmospheric ,fitting the general mood
of the song and the lyrics “dancing in
the dark and pale moonlight”.
18. Editing:The editing is really significant in this video
and a major factor for the creation of atmosphere
and artistic innovations, related to indie pop. Lot’s of
shots are filtered to a special colour, such as sepia
and others. The images harmonically change places
the one after the other and many times they are
replaced by hand held camera shots resembling
those of home videos. Moreover, special effects such
as artificial smoke are provided.
Shots:We have a variety a variety of close ups, long
shots and medium long shots on Lana Del Rey,
which apart from the artist also embodies the main
character of the video. There are also extreme long
shots of her indicating loneliness and the emotions
of the two characters are further revealed in the
close ups. Also there are some shots on the cloudy
sky and some religious symbols, indicating death
and the western notion of the afterlife.
19. Representation of social groups.
There are two interpretations of the song . The first one
is that the two women are lovers and the second is that
they are friends. If we consider the first theory , we notice
that the women are quite feminine which doesn’t fit with
the manly lesbian image , however it still fits the
stereotypical sexualisation of female homosexual
women , for the shake of the male gaze. However, they
are represented as quite innocent and pure and not in a
hideous way.
On the other hand, if we consider the second theory, we
can argue that female friendship is represented quite
positively . The two women are seen as loyal and kind to
each other, there are no elements of jealousy or “back
stabbing” , which is a common representation of female
friendship. On the contrary, they have a strong bound
and show affection to each other.
