Learning Objectives
To understand why timing and rhythm are
important in music

To demonstrate at least 3 rhythm
notations
To identify the note values of 4 rhythm
notations
What is rhythm?
Rhythm is the beat of the music, you
usually tap along to it when you‟re
listening to music.
It is a major aspect which brings a sense
of structure to the piece of music.
What is timing?
Timing refers to the ability to accurately
“keep time” and synchronise with the rest
of the group.
Time signatures are placed at the
beginning of the piece so that the
musicians are prepared for the piece they
are about to play. It shows how many
beats are in a bar.
Why are they important?
They help build the foundation of the
principle to the sound of the music.
Without them, it would just be notes being
played without a structure.
Rhythm Notation
Rhythm notation shows the duration of a note.
They are found after the time signature.
The diagram on the board shows the different notes.
You can see that:
The semibreve lasts for 4 beats
The minim lasts for 2 beats
The crotchet lasts for 1 beat
The quaver lasts for half a beat
The semi quaver lasts for a quarter of a beat
TALK DIRTY
A good example of
rhythm notation is the
popular song „Talk Dirty‟
by Jason Derulo.

This intro –
The verse –

The pre chorus follows the same pattern as the intro, and the
chorus is the same pattern as the verse
TASK
You have 2 minutes create your own example of
rhythmic notation, be sure to use a variety of
notes and make sure it lasts for 8 beats.
