Beyoncé.
Music video: End of Time Genre: Dance RnB
Storyline: There isn’t a storyline to the video, instead it focuses on her performance of the
song at different venues.
How images and lyrics connect: The video is basically Beyoncé performing at a concert
so the images and lyrics connect as she is singing the lyrics whilst dancing and
entertaining her fans.
Costume: A typical Beyoncé stage costume. Glittery dress, heels, make up etc.
Performance: Performance is the most important part of the video. Dancing, energetic,
facial expressions, backing dancers.
USP: Beyoncé's performances are unique because of her stage presence. She is
known for her amazing performances because of her dancing as well as her
singing. Her best videos are when she is just performing.
Colour: The colour is based on the stage lighting and the costumes.
Sound: Fast pace, more lyrics than instrumental.
Main Location(s): Beyoncé performances. (Different venues)
Lighting
Costume. Stands out
from backing dancers.
Performance
USP: Beyoncé is loved
for her huge
performances. Picture
shows how much her
fans love her and her
music.
Up-tempo R&B, dance and funk song, "End of Time"
portrays the influence of Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti; its
bass line was inspired by her work. Afrobeat is also
displayed in this song, the song's instrumentation includes
marching band drums, percussion and horns. The high
energy level provided has similarities to several songs by
Michael Jackson from the ‘Off the Wall’ era (1979–80).
Beyoncé's song End of Time was praised by music critics,
who described it as one of the highlights on ‘4’ thanks to
Beyoncé's boldness and its dance beat that makes the song
a catchy one. Critics also commended the uplifting lyrics
and Beyoncé's confident vocal delivery.
Genre Characteristics
My video fits the conventions of an RnB video in terms of the fashion. This is
because it is common for female costumes to be minimal clothing with very
striking hair and make up and more often than not they will wear heels.
Beyoncé fits into this convention in this music video.
The lighting of this video also fits the convention as the lighting in RnB videos
tends to be bright colours. (strobe lighting etc.)
The different camera shots would be against convention as the cuts are very
fast paced; not staying on any one shot for very long at all. Where as it is
convention of an RnB video to have slow shots through the verses and speed
up during the chorus. The shots are usually faded to make smooth transitions
through shots which shows that this video of Beyoncé-End of Time is
unconventional because the shots in this video are very quick cuts from one
to another with no real transition. However, it would fit convention in the
sense that the different cuts are made on the beats of the song.
