Media Notes
Video clip (criminal justice courtroom scene):

Two shot in conversation.

Young boy: Close ups, showing his expression.

Prosecutor: Mid shot, see character in costume.( The wig and gown)

Reaction shots, showing the woman as worried and concerned

Establishing shot to show the courtroom

Getting closer to the characters showing the tension is building up.

High angle shot showing weakness of the young boy

Low angle shot showing the prosecutor’s power

See the young boy as weak and vulnerable and the camera shots make us feel sorry for him because
the reaction shots show that people are feeling that way about him.

Point of view shots

Over the shoulder shot (all blurred) to show the young boys confusion. Not aware of anything except
his own emotions.

Ben Coulter: weak, feel sympathy for him, looks nervous, powerless.

Prosecutor: Powerful, intelligent.

Parents: worried, emotional.

In this scene, the main character Ben Coulter comes across as weak, powerless and looking very
nervous. This is shown using close ups and midshots were you see his expressions and emotions. Ben
looks very teary eyed as he speaks showing he is holding back his emotions and is constantly seen
using a high angle shot suggesting his weakness. We are also made to feel sorry for Ben due to the
reaction shots that show other characters such as his parents looking worried and scared for him.

The prosecutor is portrayed as a very powerful character that is in control of the situation. While Ben
is getting angry at him, the Prosecutor stays composed and carries on questioning him.

Video clip(criminal justice, prison extract):

Low angle shots

Dark lighting

Over the shoulder shot, shows bigger and more powerful characters.
Close ups on facial expressions, important characters and props (i.e. the phone)

High angle shot when Ben is being beaten up

Sound, mysterious

Mid shots showing that it’s set in a prison

Mid shots on the policemen showing their bored expressions and their costume

Main antagonist dominant in shots.

Pan shot, showing the CCTV and the prison cell.

As Ben walks into the prison, mid shots are used to, again, show his expression and to show his
costume as he has changed from the smart suit he was wearing in the courtroom into the scruffy
prison clothes. A high angle shot is used showing Ben walking through the prison which is against
convention as this is meant to show a character as powerful, but Ben is still seen as weak due to his
body language and expressions.
