Under his leadership, ISRO launched numerous communication and remote sensing satellites that benefited India by providing telecommunication links across the country. Rao initiated the development of launch vehicles like PSLV and GSLV that allowed India to launch satellites independently. He received several national and international awards for his contributions to India's space program including the Padma Vibhush
