• Piriformis

Piriformis
Origin: Internal surface of sacrum,
sacrotuberous ligament.
Insertion: Upper border of greater
trochanter.
Nerve supply: Laterally rotates thigh,
abducts thigh.
Action: Assists with lateral rotation and
abduction of the thigh.

Iliacus
Origin: Upper two-thirds of iliac fossa,
the upper surface of the lateral part of the sacrum
and adjacent ligaments, anterior inferior iliac spine.
Insertion: Onto tendon of psoas major, which
Continues into lesser trochanter of femur (together the
two muscles form the iliopsoas).
Nerve supply: Femoral nerve (L2, L3).
Action: Flexion of thigh at hip, assists in extension
of the lumbar spine.

Coccygeus
Origin: The triangular muscle arises by
its apex from the spine of ischium.
Insertion: The base of the triangular
muscle is inserted into the margin of
the coccyx and into the side of the
lowest piece of the sacrum.
Nerve supply: Coccygeus is innervated
by a branch of fourth and fifth sacral
nerves.
Action: pulls coccyx forward after defecation,
closing in the back part of the outlet of the
Pelvis.
