Quick referencing with QR codes

Sarah Munks, University of Huddersfield, s.l.munks@hud.ac.uk
Nicola Howorth, University of Huddersfield, n.howorth@hud.ac.uk

Recent research has suggested that the rise in the use of mobile technology is
resulting in more and more learning taking place outside the traditional classroom or
lecture theatre. Students want more choice with regards to when and how they learn
and increasingly want to be able to use their own mobile device to access teaching
and learning materials. Using QR Codes is an ideal way of utilising technology to
engage and support learners and sits well with the key themes of the conference.

Two Subject Librarians at the University of Huddersfield have been working on a
small scale project that uses QR code technology to provide students with text
specific help on referencing, an element of study that students often struggle with. As
part of the TeachMeet we will demonstrate how QR codes have been used to provide
text specific guidance on producing in-text citations and references for two cohorts of
students. We will briefly discuss the QR Code referencing project, including how it
has enabled collaboration between Computing & Library Services staff, Academics
and other Support staff at the University.
