INTRODUCTION
 Mumps is an acute viral infection of the
paramyxoviruses family.
 Mumps is contagious disease that is caused
by mumps virus.
 Some times called "epidemic parotitis"
DEFINATION
 Mumps is a viral infection caused by mumps
virus that primarily affect the parotid glands
situated below and in front of ears.
 lt can cause swelling in one or both parotid
glands.
CAUSATIVE AGENT
 The causative agent is myxovirus parotiditis, a
RNA virus of the myxovirus family.
 This virus is found in saliva, blood, human milk,
and urine. Occasionally found in cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF)
 Secondary attack rate accounts for 86%.
EPIDEMIOLOGY
RISK FACTOR
 Common among children between the age of 5-
15 year. No age is exempted.
 Disease tends to be more severe in adults.
 Single attack gives lifelong immunity.
 Infants below 6 months are immune due to
maternal bodies.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
 Humans are the only known natural host for
mumps virus, which is spread through direct
contact or by airborne droplets from the upper
respiratory tract of infected individuals.
INCUBATION PERIOD
 Varies from 2 to 3 weeks usually 18 day.
COMPLICATION
 Spontaneous abortion
 Sensorineural hearing loss (uni or bilateral)
 Mild form of meningitis
 Encephalitis
 Myocarditis
 Polyarthritis.
 SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
 Presented by chart
DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION
 History collection
 Physical examination
 Confirms the presence of swollen parotid
glands
 Blood test
TREATMENT
 Bed rest
 Plenty of fluids
 Paracetamol to reduce pain and fever
 Cold compress held against the parotid glands
 Soft and easy to swallow foods such as a soup,
porridge or pured vegetables
PREVENTION
 The MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella)vaccine is used to
immunise people against mumps.
 lt is also provide immunity from measles and rubella.
 The MMR vaccine was introduced to the UK in 1988.
 The MMR vaccine is included in the England and
wales "immunisation schedule" and is given first
around 12 months and booster is given between 3
and 5 years before starting school.
CONT…..
 A single dose of monovalent live attenuated
mumps vaccine 0.5 ml is administered
intramuscularly or subcutaneously to children
over the age of 1 year.
 In some countries the second dose is given at
the age of 4-6 years.
 Pregnant women, patient on immunosuppressive
therapy should not be given mumps vaccine.
HEALTH EDUCATION
 Presented by flash card
NURSING DIAGNOSIS
1)Acute pain related to Face swalling
 Goal:- Reducing pain
 Intervention:- Give hot and cold application of
patient.
 Give gental massage of patient.
 Use and apply diversional therapy of patient.
 Provide psychological support of patient.
 Provide comfort device of patient
 Give analgesics to the patient
2)Hyperthermia related to viral infection
Goal:- Reducing fever.
 Intervention :- check the vital sign of patient.
 Give the cold application of patient or Provide
Sponge bath of patient.
 Maintain the room temperature of patient.
 Assess patient condition every 2 hourly.
 Prevent shivering Use of blanket
 3) nutrition deficiency related to less intake of
food
 Goal- to maintain nutrition deficiency
 Intervention-assess the patient condition
 Assess the patient’s body fluids
 encourage the patient to take food in small
amount
 Provide medication as per doctor’s order
 4) knowledge deficiency related to disease
condition.
 Goal- improve knowledge related to disease
condition
 Intervention- teach the patient about the disease
and treatment
 What to take in diet understand the patient
 Use of chart and flash card understand the
patient.
