With thanks for your support!

Sincerely,

Step 3: Make a Muckraker Plan for your Event
By choosing your Sponsorship option (above) you have generated a fundraising
goal for your Muckraker campaign! Here's comes the fun part! To make your
Muckraker status official and begin working toward your goal, follow these 5
simple steps over the course of the next 20 weeks.

 Invite 5 friends or colleagues to make your Muckraker status official by
donating $20 each! (Or, get your own ball rollin' with a $100 donation.)
This $100 donation will formalize your Muckraker status! (Remember, all
donations are tax deductible.) (Weeks 1-3)
 Learn more about the Press Institute and your chosen topic, reporter or
region. The next step will be to familiarize yourself with the core mission of
the Press Institute and the specific sponsorship area you have chosen. For
example, if you chose an individual reporter, you will have the opportunity
to connect with her, learn about her goals, passions and the kind of articles
she likes to produce. If you chose a news desk, you will learn about the
successes and challenges of that news desk, including local custom, laws
and societal issues. If you chose a topic, you will learn about how the Press
Institute develops Specialty Reporting Seminars to deepen a reporter's
practice in a given area. (Weeks 3-6)
 Create an event plan! By week 10, you should have the following
information in place to host your first muckraker event:
           o Event Theme:
           o Event Location:
           o Event Guest List:
           o Event Presentations:
           o Event Needs:
           o Event Goals:
Don't worry! We'll be with you every step of the way to plan an event that is low-
cost and high impact!

Here's a sample event plan assuming a Sponsorship plan was 1 reporter in Mexico
for 1 year:
            o Event Theme: Mexican Mingle
            o Event Location: Mi Casa
o Event Guest List: 10 good friends, 5 close colleagues, 2 neighbors,
my mom and 3 of my former school teachers (you will of course list
              out their names)
o Event Presentations: Photo slide show, recorded testimonial from
my reporter (previously taped), short welcome from me, video
welcome from PI Founder Cristi Hegranes (or in person if she's local
              or in town!)
o Event Needs: Invites (online), food, wine, PI materials (postcards,
brochures, sample news stories etc.) and a computer station to play
              presentations.
o Event Goals: If every person at my party (21 guests) gave $64 I
would meet my sponsorship goal! I will ask each person for $64.
 Or a general $500 goal plus gather 15 email addresses for
people to receive follow-up info from the PI

 Send Invites and Create/Assemble Materials! During weeks 10-15 we will
work together to prepare all of the amazing materials for your first event! In
the meantime, we will firm up a date and send out invites. The date you
choose should be at least 4 weeks in advance.
 Party! With all the hard work done, now it's time to party! On the day of
your party you will pick up or make food, set up your location, ensure your
computer is working with audio/video capabilities, finalize the order of
events for the evening and get ready to have a blast!
Step 4: Event Round Up
Week 16 is all about digesting your event and tallying your financial support! Did
you meet your goal at the party? If so, yippee! You're the Ida Tarbell of our
Muckrakers (a.k.a. the best of the best.) Didn’t quite get there? No worries! There's
plenty of time left. In weeks 17-19 we can take extra steps to ensure you reach your
goal.
o In week 16, make sure you – mail or deliver ALL donations made at the
party to The Press Institute. We will ensure that your donors receive thank
you letter and IRS tax receipts in a timely manner.
o Tally event costs. We have done amazing Muckraker events for less than
$100 bucks and up to $500. An important part of planning is figuring out
how much you are willing and able to spend and thinking about asking for
donated items. The cost of your event will be worked into your support total
       for your tax-deductible donation.
o If you did not meet your financial goal at the party – we have a few options:
o 1. Are you able to cover the remainder?
o 2. Are there friends, family or folks who were not able to come to the
party that you can appeal to? If so, The Press Institute will work with
you to create an email communication filled with pictures and
information so that you can electronically appeal to a new group.
o 3. Feeling tapped out? We'll talk about other options for passing the
              torch.

Step 5: Keeping in Touch – Week 20 and beyond…
As a muckraker, you have become a very important part of The Press Institute.
More importantly, you have made a lasting mark on the lives of at least one of your
reporters! Below is a suggested plan for keeping in touch.
o If you sponsored a specific reporter, please plan to reach out to her via
email at least once every month. It is important that you read her content,
look at her photos, read her blogs, watch her video posts and encourage her
       growth and development.
o If you sponsored a news desk or an editorial team, keep in touch with the
group via email. Let them know that you are out there, cheering them on!
o Help us get the word out! Did your reporter publish an exceptional story?
Use Facebook, Twitter and email to get the word out to your friends and
colleagues. Help drive as much traffic as you can to our site!

During weeks 10-15 we will work together to prepare all of the amazing materials for your first event! In the meantime, we will firm up a date and send out invites. The date you choose should be at least 4 weeks in advance.  Party! With all the hard work done, now it's time to party! On the day of your party you will pick up or make food, set up your location, ensure your computer is working with audio/video capabilities, finalize the order of events for the evening and get ready to have a blast!
  • 6. Step 4: Event Round Up Week 16 is all about digesting your event and tallying your financial support! Did you meet your goal at the party? If so, yippee! You're the Ida Tarbell of our Muckrakers (a.k.a. the best of the best.) Didn’t quite get there? No worries! There's plenty of time left. In weeks 17-19 we can take extra steps to ensure you reach your goal. o In week 16, make sure you – mail or deliver ALL donations made at the party to The Press Institute. We will ensure that your donors receive thank you letter and IRS tax receipts in a timely manner. o Tally event costs. We have done amazing Muckraker events for less than $100 bucks and up to $500. An important part of planning is figuring out how much you are willing and able to spend and thinking about asking for donated items. The cost of your event will be worked into your support total for your tax-deductible donation. o If you did not meet your financial goal at the party – we have a few options: o 1. Are you able to cover the remainder? o 2. Are there friends, family or folks who were not able to come to the party that you can appeal to? If so, The Press Institute will work with you to create an email communication filled with pictures and information so that you can electronically appeal to a new group. o 3. Feeling tapped out? We'll talk about other options for passing the torch. Step 5: Keeping in Touch – Week 20 and beyond… As a muckraker, you have become a very important part of The Press Institute. More importantly, you have made a lasting mark on the lives of at least one of your reporters! Below is a suggested plan for keeping in touch. o If you sponsored a specific reporter, please plan to reach out to her via email at least once every month. It is important that you read her content, look at her photos, read her blogs, watch her video posts and encourage her growth and development. o If you sponsored a news desk or an editorial team, keep in touch with the group via email. Let them know that you are out there, cheering them on! o Help us get the word out! Did your reporter publish an exceptional story? Use Facebook, Twitter and email to get the word out to your friends and colleagues. Help drive as much traffic as you can to our site!
