Editor's Notes

  • #3 Hi! This is me, Meghann Scherrer. To let you know a little about me, I’d like to share my life vision with you:- discover a more joyous life- define work/life balance- be a better global citizen through greater learning and understanding - find fun in every day- give back to my community in appreciation for all that I have been afforded- have a fulfilling career with global impact
  • #5 If you can’t tell, I’m a little silly and I enjoy a good laugh. I get energy from helping others to enjoy themselves, too. I love my life, whether I’m at a baseball game or at work. Yep, that’s a shot from work!In fact, my personal mission is exactly that: to define and discover my own personal happiness, while helping everyone I meet enjoy their lives more greatly, as well -- and have fun in the meantime!
  • #7 Despite all the fun and joy, I do have a serious side.At first, I was hesitant to take this class. I love branding in my professional life, but personal part was a little intimidating. My life is always 100 mph, 100 hrs a day, 100 days a week, so I knew that I’d have to do something I hated doing: slow down. It takes hard work to stop and reflect -- I knew it’d be a challenge to change not just my daily routine, but really change my life.
  • #8 Those fears were quickly allayed upon our first writing assignment: The biographical reflection paper . Which readings or activities had a particular impact on you and why?  Discuss at least two of the assigned readings and 2 activities.  Make mention of how they have shaped your ideas and behavior.my brand statement - acts as a new lens for greater focus for which to see things through. grants greater perspective and gives my life new energy and meaning!bio reflection paper - had epiphanies while writing it. cathartic exercise that encouraged self-reflection. discovered that it’s important to know where im going AND ALSO a deeper appreciation for where i’ve been. remembering to stop and enjoy the journey, rather than just focusing on end goalbesides, what’s the end-goal of life?!
  • #10 I also drew inspiration and motivation from many of our readings. The two that stood out to me included:Simplicity chapter of “Made to Stick” by HeathI suffer from "feature creep:" I take on too much, both personally and professionally. One a-ha moment I’ve had is that I was quantifying my success by the number of things, events or activities I was participating in or the number of projects I was working on – Now, I know to use my brand statement as a filter so I can enjoy what I’m doing, rather feel like they’re items on a checklist. Killing the shiny/orbiting the hairballIn this recent article, I felt as if Sally was speaking to me! When too many things  get mixed in  (or Heath's "feature creep"), it's hard to be productive and strategic. If I filter everything through my personal brand statement, I can reduce the chaos, and better focus my passion and energy for a more enjoyable life!
  • #11 Now, how do I do that? Let’s explore the application of My Brand Statement in my lifeFirst, let’s review the Key roles I play at EOI wear a lot of hats at EO: supporting leaders around the world, in charge of social media, branding, PR messaging, event marketing and more. boss: clear a path for, educate and help my assistant while she pursues professional excellence in the communications field- team member: be a constant in a transitional environment to provide strength an d continuity; connect my team for greater unity with each other and other departments liaison: connect with other teams, other departments, other committees – some of which are situated around the world – help them with challenges, identify resources and create sound strategiesHow can I do that? With different personalities, it can be hard to manage expectations while keeping focus on my own goals. I’ve been very lucky to have a great boss for three years who’s taught me amazing life lessons. Since I’ve had countless opportunities because of her leadership, it can be my turn to help others.Nelson Mandellah said that it is better to lead from behind. What I can do is stepping back so others can step up – opportunity to help create space for Sarah; help her develop her talents, set her up for success. Some of the social media resources I will continue to leverage:LinkedIn groups for org comms, comms leaders, fellow bosses to share ideas and gain perspective and strengthReview materials from Executive CoachingAmazing professional network that spans the GLOBE!
  • #12 3. What do see as your strengths as a communicator/leader? What areas do you still need to work on and how do you plan to accomplish this? Use SWOT analysis here: Find passions in every day work to combat frustrations of daily grindUse my energy in productive ways (define, understand and leverage my boundaries)Strengths (taken from my StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment)- Achiever: focus on getting things done; "moving the needle"- Activator: connecting people to motivate them and help them lead- Communicator: use words, actions and emotions to convey meaningful information- Focus: prioritize or multi-task to work effectively and strategically- Woo: love to energize others and help them discover their strengthsWeaknesses- Impatient: have a hard time waiting for others to act- letting things go: struggle with feelings of injustice- not taking enough time for left-brain activity- sometimes too quick on the Ladder of InferenceOpportunities- spend more quality time with my husband- really develop my listening skills to get to the true meaning of others' needs- further cultivate strengths in my assistant- find new ways to give back to my community- do more yoga/paint more/other calming activity (suggestions welcome!)- finish my Masters and pursue next step in career (VP at for-profit)
  • #13 4. What are your ongoing plans for professional development? Identify any organizations that align with your career aspirations and describe your current and ongoing level of participation. Mission/vision here:Clear space for Sarah, my assistant, so she can create, learn and grow. I want the best for her, and want to support her so she can boldly pursue her dreams.Graduate with masters. Get VP/CMO position at comms firm where communications talents are supported, challenged and are valued/prioritized.Maybe at a start up where I can create structure from chaos, put processes in place, be a great second/backbone to an up-and-coming organizationIABC-DC participation – making connections, learning about my industry/craft and giving back to a greater, international organizationCapital Pride – giving back (gays in family; supporting the local community), supporting an global movement thats personally important to me.
  • #14 Thank you to my classmates for sharing with me. Thank you to Georgiana, my learning partner, for her bravery, transparency and warmth. This has been an amazing experience– and one that has shaped my life.
