Single camera techniques play a major part in the industry whether is a music video, film or even
television series. This technique is used and called during production, one camera is used per scene.
It mainly depends on the scene. Every shot and angle is is recorded by just one camera. This is
normally used.
Single camera production uses a single camera for all of the various shots. Media used with a single
camera is usually low budget and normally used for music videos and trailers. Scenes are normally
filmed all together so if there’s a dialogue scene all the lines of one persons will be shot together and
same for the other person, then edited to look like they’re having a convocation.Even though using a
single camera is more time consuming it gives directors more control of each shot.
However an alternative production method, which is more widely used is still called a "single-camera,"
but in reality two cameras are employed, one to capture a medium shot of the scene while the other to
capture a close-up during the same take, which saves time as there are half as many set-ups for each
scene. This makes filming quick and gives more editing options for the director.

Low budget as you’re only using one camera instead of multiple cameras. Don’t have to worry about
other cameras being in shot allows more flexibility with shots. Easier to gather all the shots together

the scene however some benefits would
be that the shots can be changed by
stopping the actors and moving the
camera and starting the action again. This
is suitable when the directors wants the
audience to feel more involved in the
action, or watching from a point of view of an actor however this format is more convenient as not all
crew needs to be present. Awkward shots being easier to film with single camera techniques due to
the cameraman having the availability to get right in between the actors, an advantage of single
camera shows is that directors believe it appears more reaq; to the audience. Therefore it has a
greater impact on them making it easier to relate to what is on the screen.

2. The 180 degree rule works very well along with single camera productions as it is done
very easily. This is also because the rule is not broken, for instance if you want to capture
another angle of the scene as a whole, with the use of tracking you can easily shift to the
other side. In this way you also do not have to worry about getting in the way of another
camera. Yet it also depends on the space of the set.

having a conversation with his sidekick, Rose. This shows proof of the use of single camera

Relevant info
The Conjuring 2 is a 2016 American horror film directed by James Wan and written by Carey
Hayes, Chad Hayes, Wan and David Leslie Johnson. It is the sequel to the 2013 film The
Conjuring, and is the second installment in The Conjuring film series and the third in the
franchise. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise played a role for the paranormal
investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren from the first film. The film follows the
warrens as they go to england to help the Hodgson family who are experiencing poltergeist
activity at their Brimsdown, Enfield council house in 1977 which later became referred to as
the Enfield Poltergeist. The Conjuring 2 was released in North America on June 10th , 2016.
The film received generally positive reviews and comments from critics and has grossed
over $320 million worldwide. A spin-off film titled The Nun is scheduled to be released in
2018 with Wan and Safran set to produce.
Synopsis
The main genre for this movies is horror and the subgenre is supernatural. Conjuring 2 is
horror movie based in 1977, with a family called “the Hodgsons“ situated and living in a
house of england ( Enfield) . The hodgsons started seeing paranormal activity in the house
and realised that the house is enfield was haunted by a past away man that used to live
there before (Bill), which died in the actual house ( the sofa). However the old man decided
to posses the girl who was called Janet. However they needed some help in order to help
Janet, however the local church who knew what was happening to the hodgsons decided to
call the two paranormal investigators called Ed and Lorraine. Ed and Lorraine who offered
to help the Hodgsons they was being haunted as well with the main devil was called Valak.
Ed and Lorraine contacted with Bill who was attached to janet to try and get him out of her,
throughout the film we found out that the old man was being haunted the main devil Valak as
he asks for help to the investigators by a audio tape. At the end of this movie , lorraine found
out that the mains devil name was valak and she had a hint with the scribblings she had in
her bible, she started shouting out the devil's name because she knewthat weak point of the
devil is if she pointed a cross to the devil and shouting out the devil’s name, Ed is saving
Janet from nearly falling out of the bedroom window. Finally, the movie ends as a happy
ending, Ed and Lorraine finally got the demon to stop haunting the Hodgson family and save
Janet from dying because of being possessed by the demon.

4. Genre:
As I mentioned earlier this movie is a horror movie. The reason it is a horror genre is because it has
all the conventions that a horror movie mostly uses. It is a horror movie as it is using elements that
mainly horror movies use such as, possessed people by a supernatural spirit, demons haunting a
family and their home, paranormal investigators and uses lots of jump scares which make the
audience feel a little bit tense and scared. This reason also suggests that there is no use of sub genre
or hybrid as there is only one main genre which is horror because the movie does not include any
types of non horror elements such as zombie or slaughter but only supernatural which is common in a
horror movie. The conventions of Conjuring 2 is that is contains many horror elements such as, low
key lighting, dark corners, and a main antagonistic that is hunting the whole family or one person, but
normally younger characters because that’s the weakest point for a adult .
For example, the scenes in Conjuring 2, use low key lighting to suggest to the audience that
something is either hiding behind the darkness or that the area or place they are in, represent evil and
unsafety as places that are not bright or with warm tone colours suggest that the place is safe and no
evilness is presence. However, there are many unconventional scenes in the movie because it shows
that no one dies in the movie as the paranormal investigators help to get the spirits and devils out of
the family in order to live a normal life, however it end with a happy ending which is really rare and
unconventional of a horror film as most horror movies show scenes of some characters in the movie
dying representing the genre as it's made to scare people and want to frighten them.
Narrative: A reason for this film being unconventional is because there is a use of hierarchy of
villains which is representing the different levels of the three villains that are in the movie such as the
demon (Valak) , the crooked man and the dead man (Bill). The reason this shows that the movie is
unconventional is due to the use of hierarchy of villains which is not convention for horror movies as in
most of horror movies.
The movie is linear as the story is explained in order, even though the show some flashbacks this
wouldn’t affect the story so this means that it’s still linear. The story is also multi-strand as there are
two stories going simultaneously , as Ed and Lorraine live in America and the Hodgson family live
in London, so the story will switch from place to place showing two stories going on at the same
time. Conjuring 2 is multi stranded, there is actually two different storylines that emerge at the end
of the story.
The conjuring 2 is very conventional in the sub genre the supernatural, as it includes dark lighting,
lots of jump scares, objects moving around the room, and the cause of it all is rarely seen unless it
wants to reveal itself. This can be seen as what you would expect in a basic supernatural movie.

5. An example of an unconventional part of the movie is when the Hodgson family sit down in the
living room to listen to Ed Warren sing Elvis. However, this is done on purpose, in order to create a
false sense of security for the audience. The ending is closed because the movie doesn't contain a
cliffhanger and it shows the ending which is when the Warren family help the Hodgson family get rid
of the spirits that were haunting their family.
Camerawork
Camerawork is the most important thing when it comes to a film, however
James Wan really likes to play around with camera shots in conjuring 2, many
examples of shots shown is this films will be shown below:
In the movie different angles are used
like high and low angles, these
emphasise dominance of each character,
for example when Lorraine and Bill is
talking bill looks up at Lorraine at a low
angle and lorraine looks down at him high
angle, this is because lorraine comes to
realisation that Bill is actually extremely
weak and not the cause of what’s going
on as he himself is terrified of the demon
that has a hold on him.
Another example of another low and high
is when, little Billy goes to let the dog out
in the neighbor's house as the bell was
ringing, but actually is the spirit which
turns from the dog into the crooked man
looking down at Billy as Billy is frightened
and scared and is trying to escape from
the grasp of the crooked man, which
ends up being janet.
A use of close in this film is at the
beginning of the film when Lorraine was
closing was closing her eyes as she
wanted to mentally see what had happen
to the murdered family how killed the
family and how they were killed.

6. Or when lorraine is confronted by the
demon in her home, there is a close up of
her face to show her scared and shocked
expressions, of the demon coming out
the painting, it also during this scene has
extreme close up on the sides of the
painting to reveal the hands coming from
behind the painting.
An example of a long shot is when janet
is sitting in the living room by herself and
the TV blurs for no reason. They use this
shot type to show the character and
what’s also going on around them, so in
this instance it’s the TV.
Another example of a long shot is when
Ed and Lorraine first come to say hi to the
Hodgsons in order to help them and get
the spirit out of janet, they use this type of
shot to show the surroundings of the
house and how Lorraine is reacting to it.
An establishing shot is used a lot to show
location and setting. For example one
establishing shot was used to show
Peggy’s house to show the state of the
house and location. Especially when they
introduce the name of the road ‘Green
Street’ to show the audience where the
setting in London is located to keep the
verisimilitude. This is as the film is based
on a true story in Green Street
In conjuring 2 there are rarely any over-
the shoulder-shot, an example of an
over the shoulder shot is when she is
getting interrogated when she is
possessed by Bill, this over the shoulder
shot makes us feel like we are in the
conversation as this type of shot is
very common when two characters are having a discussion.
Mid shots, are used in conversation, this is because the main importance is the conversation
of the characters , you want to show parts of the body, like facial hair body language of the
character when they are having a conversation , like when Ed and lorraine are talking with

the conversations are going on.
Sound
The sound that is mostly used is
diegetic sound. The uses of diegetic sound is sound that comes from that text world.
Which means that it is sound that emanates from a source within an actual scene.
Conjuring 2, uses diegetic sound such as, screaming, gasping, crying, banging,
tapping and heavy breathing because it is using sound that the characters are
presenting int the scenes of the movie. Diegetic sound is conventional in a horror
movie as it uses sound that comes from the characters from the movie and it uses
scenes that are made to make the audience scream and feel frightened of the scenes.
Also, the sound needs to be diegetic because it shows the sounds that the movie
uses from characters or objects
that are being used in the movie.
An example of diegetic sounds is
when the cops go inside the the
Hodgson’s house, trying to find the s
what caused this disturbance, they
find nothing until they hear the noises
from the walls and “ bang noises” ,
leading the chair to start moving,
these are all diegetic noises as it is
what the characters in the movie have
to hear so they can react to.
Another good example of diegetic
sound which took place in the movie
is when janet turns into the crooked
man scaring billy and then unleashing
her wrath and things flying about the
room and smashing as she screams these are all diegetic sounds where the actors have to
react to.

8. Non-diegetic sound is also used
throughout the movie, using long
suspenseful notes, which contrast to the
short sharp notes, making the audience
feel immediately tense. For example, in
scenes leading up to a jump scare, slow,
soft and calming music is used, to give
the audience a false sense of security
The non-diegetic slow music
foreshadows to the audience that a jump scare is coming. It is mainly used to manipulate the
audience’s feelings, in order to create a sense of tension and build suspense within a scene.

things which occurred during these times
Asynchronous sound is also used,
in order to create a scary
atmosphere. For instance, the
thunder and rain in the background
towards the end of the movie. The
rain and storm outside is used for
pathetic fallacy, for the audience to
understand that something bad is
going to happen. An example of this is when Ed and Lorraine are with the other help consulting
the information they have collected so far, there is noise in the background such as people talk,
bar games etc. this is used to add to the realism of the scene, to make the viewer believe this
happened or is happening.
Editing
There are many editing techniques that Conjuring 2 uses in the movie such as,
parallel editing, match on action, cutaways, pace of cutaways and combination of
shots. The movie mostly uses cut aways as this will show one scene of the movie but
then change to another scene of the movie which will show another scenes and
create tension as it may change from a scene to a jump scene which will make the
audience feel uncomfortable. However they wanted to add to the movie, adding to the
realism and the quality of each scene. For example combination of shots, the mixture
of shots used add to the tension, showing more emotions, facial expressions,
creating depth for the serious scene.
Slow pan is used to bring an audience in
gradually to a jump scare, giving the audience a

9. false sense of safety. On the other hand, a quick pan is used to match characters actions or head
movements. An example of this is when Lorraine finds the mirror in the beginning and the nun
appears, the camera quickly pans back and forth, which is used to jump scare the audience., this is
also a good example of a cuttaway, as lorraine looking into the mirror sees the Nun she looks away
and she is not behind her but her position has changed in the mirror, she does this again as she looks
back at the mirror the demon nun has come out the mirror and attacked lorraine, this is a perfect
example of a cutaway to build tension adding to the
suspense.
Slow cuts are used to create tension amongst
the audience in order for the audience to believe
something will appear out of nowhere such as a
demon to create a jump scare. There is also a
long cut used which is unconventional yet suits
the scene well. For example, the only long cut
used is when Ed Warren is interviewing Janet in
Bill Wilkin’s chair in the corner behind him. The
only reason it makes sense is because firstly, Bill
was comfortable to talk to them that way in Janet’s
body. This also makes sense as later on in the
film, people think Janet made it up so this scene
could have been a fake. However through the use
of CGI we can see how Janet slowly turns into the crooked man making it scary for the audience. Also
the long cut of Ed is because it adds mystery for the audience of what goes
on in the back and we capture Ed’s facial
reactions throughout the questions and answers.
Parallel cuts which is cross editing, is used
throughout the movie, especially during the
start of the movie. The movie is divided
between two different stories going on
simultaneously , which is the hodgson’s,
going about their normal lives in the UK and
the warrens, also going about their ways in the
states. The two go through their own timelines
until, like all parallel editing they meet further
down the line. The two stories were cross edited
to enable the audience to understand both stories
at the same time, making the audience see the
similarities and the differences between them.

10. A common convention in editing of horror films is quick cuts to something scary, this is used to
catch the audience off guard and give them more of a jump scare. This is used throughout the
Conjuring film

scene to be shown as a long shot then cuts
away to the next scene of Lorraine walking to

a close up of Lorraine’s face to show her facial
expression. There a lot of cut aways used in the
movie because when there is a scene, the scene
will then be cut to another scene which will be
cut in a slow or fast pace depending on the
tension of the scene. It will also show to
emotions the characters are feeling as if the
scene is showing a close up of a character's
face like in the images above.
Match on action is something you expect in
every movie, but the transitions of shots need
to be clean and perfectly timed. Match on
action is used many times in the conjuring, for
example in the beginning of the movie when
the 4 are walking out of school, and another
group of boys try to bully billy, the angle
changes as Janet’s friend pushes him away,
this transition is smooth as the editing of the
shots was transition together smoothly and
perfectly, this is an example of match on
action, this shot type is used constantly lots of
times throughout the movie.

11. The last technique i will be talking about is
superimposition Superimpositions are
used to to establish a scene once a
change takes place, for example when
they cut back and forward between
different locations, for example when they
cut back from Lorraine and Ed after their
interview to the hodgsons residence, the
first shot in this scene is of the hodgsons
house. This is a superimposition,as it shows that the setting has changed back to the hodgsons
residence
Establishing a new scene.
MISE ON SCENE
In Conjuring 2 shows how the decor of the
homes are showed and how characters are
dressed like. For example, the decor in the
house of the Hodgson family is presented in
the style of the 60s even though it should be
shown as in the 70s. This is because the
Hodgson family are portrayed as poor and
cannot afford to buy new furniture for their
home so they live with the previous family’s
old furniture. The juxtaposition between the
Hodson family with the Warren family
because the hodgson family are portrayed as
poor as they cannot afford to buy new objects
whereas the Warren family are shown to be rich and wealthy and can afford modern furniture
and clothing.
Costume: Valak’s costume signifies the
representation of horror through the black
nun’s outfit this is because the colour black
connotes the darkness to the audience.
Furthermore, the with the nun’s outfit it
symbolises spiritless to the audience in
which today’s society are less educated in
this means that the audience would be in
the unknown which is fear to our culture
the fear of the unknown stranger.
The location: Enfield, London makes the narrative
realistic to the audience because of the city area the
audience would feel more threatened because the
antagonist is real and living with the society therefore
the audience are able to relate with the location of the
area as it is well known from the real paranormal

moved/lived in location similar to the Enfield house.
Lighting: In the film, the conjuring 2 throughout the film in the main location is low key lighting
which means it very dark and glum therefore the antagonist the demon nun is shown with a darker
shadow and with sudden jump of the
glow when the antagonist appears in the frame.
Props: The crooked man as with the toy therefore is the
main prop within the film which represents the fear of
the antagonist to the audience. The crooked man was a
smaller antagonist to the demon nun however it was
possessed by the main antagonist. The crooked man
nursery rhyme Saussure to the audience the fear through
the creepy pan of the toy. Secondly the fire engine
moving on its own presents the fear to the audience as it
gives the effect of the unknown which is a common fear
within society.
The hodgson residents, looks dull, its
decaying, the rooms are very dark and cold
reflecting the atmosphere, clearly showing
that the family does not have a lot of money,
which many didn't during these times, the house
clearly needs renovation, but the family cannot
afford it. Whereas you have their neighbour’s
residence, whose house is warmer and brighter,
The house is cleaner and looks like it has been
refurbished, as the couple living there have good
money.
Another household we look at is the
warrens house, which is also very bright,
warm and comforting, revealing that they
have good money. Which is a juxtaposition
between the neighbours and the warrens to

comfortable homes, whereas the hodgson’s reflect poverty dark & dull emotions.

Television reporter Angela Vidal and her cameraman are assigned to spend
the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes
them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the
scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the
apartment units. They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been
infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously
attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the
CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone
access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those
locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what
took place is the news crew's videotape.
Quarantine was released on October 10, 2008. On its opening day, the film
grossed $5,379,867 ranking #1 in the box office,Its total gross is $41,319,906
worldwide.
Genre:
The movie Quarantine is a horror genre but with a sub genre that is zombies because even
though the movie is horror, there is a subgenre that shows that there is more than one genre
that links together. The movie is mainly horror zombie as the movie is based on zombies and
this suggests that the movie’s genre is a subgenre of horror zombies. The style of the movie
is shown as found footage as the movie is supposed to give the impression of raw footage
found but someone else who is watching the scenes the reporter’s cameraman has
filmed.This means that to try and make the movie as realistic as possible, a member of the
cast is part of the filming crew and they film the movie the whole time. Due to this type of
filming the actors in the production were really put to the test, unlike movies with normal
filming, the actors in this production had to memorise big chunk of their lines and remember
them as the camera was constantly rolling, until during the film the camera was turned off or
there was an ellipse during the movie to show some time had passed. This all adds to the
verisimilitude of the movie as the main object of the production was to make the movie as

make it as like someone eventually found this tape and released it in a movie form for the
rest of the world to see.
The movie is unconventional as the zombies are more aggressive and more faster than
other zombies on any other movies as they are suppose to be slow and just want to eat
whereas the zombies in this movie, they are shown to be more fast and desperate for blood
Narrative
The narrative for Quarantine is linear as is is showing the storyline in chronological order.It is
shown in chronological order because it is found footage, meaning that it is meant to be like
someone has found the camera and started watching the footage in the order it has been
recorded in.The movie is not in non linear as it shows the storyline in order and it doesn't
confuse the audience because they know that the movie has started with a scene that
explains how the rest of the scenes will happen.Therefore, it is linear because it is meant to
be as realistic as possible for the audience to experience.The movie is closed narrative as
there is no cliffhanger at the end of the movie and it doesn't leave the audience questioning
what will happen next and if a next movie will be made to finish of the previous movie telling
the audience what happened after the final scene, however Angie has died when she is
dragged off into the darkness by the man. Finally the movie quarantine in single stranded as
it follows one story line with a specific number of people that’s why it doesn't switch back and
forth from a location to a location. It is a good use of Single strand as it won’t be confusing
the audience because it will make more sense if it's only one storyline going on and it’s
found-footage.
Camerawork
The camera work was very simple in quarantine, as most of the filming was done from
an over the shoulder shot as the filming was done as found footage, the over the
shoulder shot was used to show that the cameraman was filming the whole time and
was involved in the cast.
Many high angle shots are used, to show bodies,
which have splattered onto the floor, showing they are
weak now that they are dead and low angle shots, are
also used to show the old woman in the apartment,
portraying to the audience that she is powerful and
scary. However, the majority of shots used were mid
shots, at eye level, due to the cameraman
Quarantine shows in the movie that there is no use of
tripod throughout the whole movie as the movie is based on
found footage and later on in the scenes, the scenes are
shown to be shaky as it is meant to be looked like someone
is holding the camera whilst recording everything they see

15. therefore Tracking and panning were two of the most important shot types used on the
production of quarantine. As tracking showed there was a lot of running from the cast and
the cameraman had to move around to stay with the rest of the crew when something was
going on.
Close ups are used in order to show how
small and claustrophobic certain areas of
the building and are also used to
emphasise the emotions of characters and
how scared they are of the events
unfolding. An example of a close up in
Quarantine is in towards the end when
angie is trying to stay quiet so she doesn't
create attention to the zombien however in
this scene we can see what emotions she
had and what her facial expression which is

In this picture we see Angie breaking the
4th wall by looking straight at the camera,
however that scene was the last scene
that we could see proper light in the
background and a happy mood
atmosphere, and a safe place, this is also
a method to scare the audience, as she
asking for help although the aren't there.
She also breaks the 4th wall in the
beginning and throughout the movie as
her character is a reporter and she is
supposed to talk to the audience informing
them what happens throughout the night.
By using a long shot of characters running,
this adds to the pace of the movie. An
example of a long shot is again, towards the
end of the movie when all the events are
unfolding. We see Angie and the cameraman
searching for the keys and then running up the
stairs to open the door. Which portrays to the

16. audience how rushed and nervous the characters are, and how desperate they are to
escape from the building.
During the movie the main establishing shot used was right at the beginning of movie
where you see Angie introduce herself in her the movie, setting the scene behind her
revealing that it is a fire station. This also one of the only times that a tripod would be used
in the production.
However, the majority of shots used were mid shots, at eye level, due to the cameraman
holding the camera and filming events from his perspective. Due to the majority of shots
being mid shots, the audience can see both the characters facial expressions and their
upper body language, so the audience can relate to how the character is feeling and
example of a mid shot is when angie and jake are just having a look at the old ladder back,
this shows the object as well as the character.

interviewing the little girl, you have a
close up to emphasise her facial
expressions to show she is not
well.During this also there is lots of
extreme close ups and the camera
moves focusing on different features of
angies face showing her facial features

Editing
Hardly any editing is used throughout the movie, as the footage is raw, meaning that nothing
has been cut, the camera has just been turned on and off. When the camera is switched on
and off, this symbolises a jump forward in time, known as an ellipsis. It is using found
footage to present the whole film because it is made to show the audience that it is found
footage as the movie is based on a reporter who is filming their whole experience and needs
to record everything to show people what they are seeing, due to hardly any editing used
within the movie, scenes would be performed in one continuous shot, meaning that the
actor’s skills were tested. However if they stop recording at one scene, they will need to
have the same positions as they were in the previous scene so no errors will occur and that
the time needs to be filmed properly and on time to make sure that continuity is kept the
same throughout the movie.If there was more uses of editing techniques,it would make the
movie seem less real and take away from verisimilitude. Parallel editing is not used, as the
movie is single stranded, meaning that there is no other storyline to watch with the main
storyline in the apartment building.There are hardly any cuts used in the movie as they
cannot edit any scenes because of the style of the movie and cannot edit the scenes
because the movie has been made for a person to pick up the camera and watch the
footage as it just is.
An example of when the camera is switched off is when Angie is in shock after the old
woman has been shot, and she wants to see the footage. In the next scene, the cameraman
switches the camera on again and the next scene begins with the woman and her dog

18. Sound
The sound in Quarantine is used as diegetic because as the movie is recorded as found
footage, there will be no use of non diegetic sound because it would defeat the purpose of
the movie being found footage is all of a sudden uses of non diegetic sound as non diegetic
sound is mainly used for scenes in movies to add extra music in the background to make the
audience feel more attached to the cnes and make tension rise in the scenes. In the other
hand , if there is use of non diegetic sound this will confuse the audience because the movie
is shown as found footage and it will make the movie less real and mess up verisimilitude.
However, there is some uses of asynchronous sound such as the gunshots, helicopter and
sirens in the background which has an effect as it makes the scenes more realistic and it is
expected to be heard as the characters are entering a building that required help from public
services and gunshots are heard as there are people who die from being shot.There is no
incidental music as there is no use of non diegetic sound. The obvious form of diegetic
sound is dialogue and there are many scenes of
people speaking to one another.
There is use of synchronous sound such as,
screaming and shouting as it used for a purpose
because people in the movie are scared and are panic
because of the situation they are in. For example. The
police man starts shouting at people to get them to
listen to him and people start screaming when they see the people who have been infected
turning into zombies.
There are different accents between the characters, the tone that some of the characters
speak are different, for example the policeman speaks in an authoritative manner, another
example of an character,s tone would be jake the fireman who always says it’s going to be
alright and speaks in a more calm tone.
Narrative

19. The narrative for Quarantine is linear as is is showing the storyline in chronological order.
The movie is not in non linear as it shows the storyline in order and it doesn't confuse the
audience because they know that the movie has started with a scene that explains how the
rest of the scenes will happen. The movie is closed narrative as there is no cliffhanger at the
end of the movie and it doesn't leave the audience questioning what will happen next and if
a next movie will be made to finish of the previous movie telling the audience what happened
after the final scene.
The final scene ends with Angie being
dragged back into darkness buy another
subject, this shows that the movie has ended
as she has been taken away and not seen
her anymore.
Finally, the narrative is single stranded as there is only one storyline which shows only one
main storyline. There is no other storyline apart from showing the scenes of the building with
infected people and the fire station. It is good that Quarantine only uses a single strand as it
will not confuse the audience if there are many different storylines and it will make the movie
seem more real as it is in the style of found footage.
Mise on scene
The mise en scene of the movie is about the locations used, the lighting, makeup, costumes,
colours and props used in the whole production there are only two locations throughout the
movie apart from the travelling between the two locations, these locations are the fire station
and the apartment block, the juxtaposition between the two is the lighting, the lighting shows
the mood of both scenes, in the beginning of the production the setting is very bright
reflecting the mood of the characters involved in the production, which is happy with laughter
as Angie begins her journalist report, with the two fireman jake and fletcher, from that point
onwards the lighting starts to descend from the they leave the building and reach the
apartment blocks the lighting decreases. When they reach they apartment blocks the
atmosphere has already changed and the audience can already tell it’s not right from the
lighting and atmosphere from the building and other characters in the production, from then
onwards the lighting also decreases until the very end where it reaches pitch black, reflecting
on how important the lighting was reflecting the atmosphere in the production.

20. In this three pictures we can see that throughout the productions there,s three different
atmosphere and changes in the environment, in the first picture we see a happy and friendly
mood as we can see a lot of light which represents the word ‘ safe ‘. In the second picture
we see a darker background which represents confusion, uncomfortableness and danger,
and the last picture we see a pitch black background and green light needs to be used to
enabled the audience to see what’s happening around, this represent death and no hope at
all.
Props are also used in the scenes as they are
used for a purpose by a character. An
example of this is, when the policeman pulls
out his gun. The reason he pulls out his gun
is to threaten the other characters in the
movie to listen to him as he thinks he is
incharge of everyone, but it also suggests
that he is scared as he thinks that by having a
weapon, he can control everyone and
thinking that he has all the power. The
weapon symbolises power authority and also
protection, which suggests to the audience that he can control people because of the
weapon he has.
There were many other props used in the production such as a hammer used by jake then
main weapon used to defend the group, and other props such as a drill and syringe used by
the CDC to try control and understand the virus being released, the syringe can be related to
a cure or some sought of concoction to control another in containment, props also keys in
reflecting the mood and atmosphere in the particular scenes in the movie.

21. This image shows people wearing hazard suits as
they come into the building. The use of the hazard
suits suggest that the area is either in danger or
infected as hazard suit are only worn if people need
to be protected from a dangerous subject. You can
also see that the colours of the area they are in are
dull and cold colours as it suggests that there is
something wrong and there is no light to show some
sort of safety.
The juxtapose between these two locations is that one location is safe whereas the other
locations isn't. The image on the left shows the location of the fire station, the warm and
bright colours suggests that the area the characters are in are safe and the lighting is very
bright representing safety and no evilness presence as they are no dark or low key lighting.
In contrast, the image on the right shows the location of the old building, you can see that
even when the characters enter the building, the lighting is very low and dull as it represents
grey, blue cold colours to show unsafeness and suggests to the audience that something is
wrong with that location and feel sinisterly because of the different vibe from the fire police
station.
The colour schemes also are another key in reflects the moods of the setting such as the
building you see a lot of grey and blues reflecting a very dull and dark setting of the
scenery, which suits the movie as the movie itself is very dark and dull as all the
characters die in the end.
The colour scheme is also important as it sometimes reflects the characteristics of the

22. characters in the movie for example: jake and fletcher wore the colour blue under their
fireman suits which represents bravery and loyalty which jakes displays throughout the
movie. Another example is Angie she wears white underneath her jacket to display purity a
if she is the innocent one in the movie, another example is the colour grey worn by the
apartment manager and the vet living in the building, this colour represents wisdom as
they both are very wise in their own particular topics.
