Sustainable preservation of environment is essential for the protection of future generation. These slides discuss the causes and consequences of the environmental movements in India.
The Chipko movement began in 1970s in rural Uttarakhand as a forest conservation movement where villagers embraced trees to prevent logging. It was inspired by earlier movements protecting sacred trees. In 1973, villagers in Gopeshwar protested the felling of 300 trees awarded to a company by hugging the trees, forcing the loggers to retreat. The movement spread with more protests, most notably in 1974 when 27 women confronted and embraced trees to stop logging. Their four-day standoff was successful, leading to a logging ban in the area. The movement emphasized non-violent protest and spread environmental awareness among villagers dependent on forests.
EVS, green business, green consumption, major environmental movements in indiaChirag Patel
This document provides an overview of environmental movements and green initiatives in India. It discusses several prominent environmental movements in India such as the Chipko movement, Narmada Bachao Andolan, and campaigns to protect the Silent Valley forest and the Taj Mahal. It also covers topics like green consumption, encouraging the use of environmentally-friendly products, and the roles of government and industry in promoting sustainable development and green business practices. Overall, the document outlines the history of environmental activism in India and different approaches to promoting environmental protection and conservation.
The Chipko movement began in the 1970s when villagers in Uttarakhand, India hugged trees to prevent deforestation by logging corporations. Led primarily by women, the non-violent protests stopped logging in certain areas. Over 260 years earlier, the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan sacrificed their lives hugging trees ordered to be cut, inspiring the name "Chipko" meaning "tree huggers." The movement brought attention to sustainable forestry and local control over forest resources.
Karnataka's traditional artisans in India have adopted more environmentally friendly practices, such as using natural dyes and avoiding toxic materials. An exhibition increased their market success. Home builders in Bangalore are utilizing eco-friendly techniques like rainwater harvesting and using mud bricks. A seed ball scattering event involved villagers and students in restoring habitats. Religious institutions in India are also going green, with one temple installing a large solar cooking system and selling carbon credits. Effective ways to spread environmental awareness include news, celebrity endorsements, and informative advertisements.
The Chipko movement was a forest conservation movement started in the 1970s in India to protect trees from being cut down. Local village women would literally hug trees to prevent loggers from felling them. The movement was non-violent and sparked by the need to preserve forests for livelihoods and maintain ecological balance. Key leaders included Chandi Prasad Bhatt and village women who led protests by embracing trees. Through non-violent civil disobedience, the movement successfully slowed deforestation and raised environmental awareness in India.
The environment plays a vital role in human living. The environment comprises of all the natural resources such as air water, land, forests, and minerals. It is responsibility of populace to protect the natural resources. Nonetheless, due to technical advancement and other reasons, there is a lot of misuse of these natural resources, in the form of land degradation, water pollution, air pollution, and deforestation. All these factors lead to worsening of environment. Great efforts are being made in order to regain the environment by people through voluntary organizations, which have concerns about the environment. There are cases where people have revoked and adopted non-violent action movements to protect their environment (Arne Kalland, Gerard Persoon, 2013).
The document discusses the important role of women in agriculture and the environment globally. It outlines how colonialism disrupted traditional female farming systems and introduced divisions between men and women. It then describes several women-led environmental and social movements across India and Kenya that protested issues like displacement, deforestation, and loss of land and livelihood. These movements aimed to preserve local ecosystems and involve communities in sustainable management and conservation of forests and natural resources.

1. Mountain Cleaners
Current Projects
Triund
The Mountain Cleaners initial project, the Triund Waste Collection
Program has been running continuously since March 2010.
Volunteers are recruited to go up to the mountain camp (a four
hour hike from Mcleod Ganj) every Monday to segregate and sort
the trash at the tea shops and guest houses en route to and at
Triund. On Tuesdays the volunteers scale the slopes as they clear
the back log from previous years.
Guna Devi Temple
Every Saturday Mountain Cleaners and their volunteers hike 3
hours to the sacred Gaddi temple cleaning the trail as they go.
Hundreds of pilgrims visit the temple every week leaving behind
huge amounts of garbage. The temple area is cleaned and the
waste is segregated and sorted ready to be bought down by the
mules.
Kareri Village and Lake
A road to Kareri village has been under construction for several
years and its completion will transform this idyllic location into a
tourist hotspot. Thousands of people visit the campsite each
year with all the waste being burnt or thrown into the forest.
The hike up to the lake is becoming increasingly littered.
Mountain Cleaners have done 3 clean up hikes to clear the trash
and are planning to set up a waste management system and an
environmental education program in the local school.
Interactive Education
We do Children’s Days on the last Sunday of every month. We
teach the kids about the environment through activities, games,
artwork and ‘garbage crafts’ using discarded items. These
events are a great way for us to teach children about civic pride
and the importance of taking care of nature.
2. Campaigning and Publicity
Mountain Cleaners know that the key to change lies with
education and by enlisting the support of Bollywood stars and
cricket players to convey the message that our communities
should be clean like our homes. Players from Kings XI Punjah
recently attended a painting competition held by Mountain
Cleaners. The group are also planning to campaign for recycling
facilities in Himchal Pradesh. Jodie recently met Anurag Singh
Thakur (the president of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association to
discuss this.
Recyclables Collection and Dustbins
We have just purchased and painted 10 dustbins that have been
distributed around Bhagsu. They are emptied by Mountain
Cleaners on a daily basis. A waste station has been set up at Galu
with further recycling drop off stations planned for Bhagsu.
Approval for improvements to the towns’ waste container area is
being sought from the municipality. We are also collecting
recyclables from 40 businesses in Upper Bhagsu.
Manimahesh Yatra
We conducted a 6 week clean up and recycling campaign at the
popular Hindu pilgrimage last year and will be there for 2 months
this year. We are running a waste management program and aim
to bring back as much waste as we can to maximize recycling
and minimize dumping and burning. We will continue to work
with the local schools and Panchayat to introduce a waste
disposal system in Bharmour.
Special Events
We organise special activities, mass cleanups and events in the
community and schools to celebrate occasions such as World
Environment Day, Earth Day, etc. We’ve undertaken several art
projects to improve unsightly areas and to convey a Clean ‘n’
Green message while raising awareness about the importance of
‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’.
