Motor Ins urance Policy
 This is a pers onal ins urance contract and hence
.
propos er has to fill up the propos al form
 There are two types of ins urance
 Liability Only policy and
 Package policy
 The Liability only policy is mandatory ins urance
requirement as per the Indian Motor Vehicle Act
1988. This policy ins ures the liability of the
.
owner of the vehicle agains t the Third Party
 The Package policy covers the damage to the
vehicle apart from the mandatory liability
.
ins urance
Motor Ins urance Policy
 The fixation of the liability is governed by the
,
Motor Vehicle Act The claim is lodged with MACT
 The fixation of liability for the damage to the
vehicle is decided by the INSURERS. Surveyors
.
are the intermediary
 The policy names the perils agains t which the
ins urers as s ume the ris k of damages or the los s
.
to the vehicle

Motor Ins urance
 ,
Motor Ins urance includes Private Cars Motorized
Two Wheelers and Commercial Vehicles
excluding .
vehicles running on rails
 All the vehicles having number plates have to be
.
ins ured under the Motor Ins urance If the vehicle
us e is res tricted to premis es then CPM can be
is s ued.
 The Ins urance is applicable for vehicles plying
.
within the geographical limits of INDIA
 .
Geographical limits can be extended
Valuation of the Motor Vehicle
 Every as s et under General Ins urance s hould
.
have an ins urable value
 .
There has to be a method to value the as s et
 There are three methods of valuation of the
.
motor vehicle
4. VINTAGE CARS
5. CLASSIC CARS
6. ( )
Ins ured declared value IDV
Valuation of the Motor Vehicle
 Vintage Cars and Clas s ic Cars have the definition
of the tariff but it is the IDV method which s hould
.
be very clear to all
 ’
IDV is bas ed on the manufacturers lis ted s elling
price of the brand and the model propos ed for
ins urance with due adjus tment for the
depreciation.
 .
The tariff provides for s cale pf dep for vehicles

INSURERS & Ins ured decides the IDV
 .
There are minimum ins ured values as well
Bas is of rating
 :
There are two parts for rating For Act liability
.
s ection & for Own Damage
 Once you know the value of the as s et then in order
to ins ure the s ame there s hould be a method to
.
rate the ris k to enable collection of premium
 .
Tariff provides for the method to rate the ris k I e
.
the Motor Vehicle in this cas e
 Rating Factors : The premium rating is bas ed on
:
the following factors
  a)   Insured’
s Declared Value (IDV) of the vehicle (For


b)   CubicCapacity

 The four factors s tated earlier takes up different

meaning under the different s ection of the tariff
 The s ections are logical s ections and eas y to
.
unders tand
 Broadly you are aware that there are private cars
.
and there are commercial vehicles
 The tariff has s egmented them in the s ame
:
fas hion and hence we have

IMT Endors ements
 65
There are endors ements s ignifying the benefits and the
limitations of every extens ions or deletions made under the
policy and they actually define the coverage under the
.
endors ements
 Example – As s uming that you ins ure a CRANE under motor
policy and the cover is extended to include the ris k of
overturning then you have to us e 47
IMT .
to define the cover
 The legal liability to the paid driver of a commercial vehicle
is as per the 40
IMT .
wordings
 If the Car Tape is covered then the ins urance is defined by
24
IMT .
and hence has to be attached to the policy
-
Motor Ins urance Terminologies
:
Deductibles
 The tariff provides for compuls ory exces s to be borne by the
ins ured in the event of any los s or damage claimable under the
.
policy 21 22 .
IMT & to be us ed
:
TPPD
 .
The Act pres cribes for two Act liabilities i e TPPI & TPPD and
.6000/-.
whereas the TPPI is unlimited the TPPD is limited to Rs The
. 7.5
tariff permits the TPPD coverage upto Rs Lacs as in built
.6000/-
cover but for reducing the s ame to Rs there are dis counts
.
pres cribed
/ :
Us e confined to s ite premis es
 /
Many indus trial motors movable plants are us ed within the s ite
33.33%
only hence dis count is granted
-
Motor Ins urance Terminologies
:
Trans fer
 When the vehicle is s old the policy is trans ferred to the new
.50/-
owner and trans fer fee of Rs is collected to is s ue a new
.
certificate of ins urance
Subs titution:
 When the owner buys a new vehicle then the new vehicle
can be ins ured under the s ame policy by s ubs tituting the
.
old with the new vehicle This is done after ens uring that
.
the old vehicle has the compuls ory Liability Only ins urance
Double Ins urance:
 Occas ionally vehicles are ins ured twice and tariff provides
.
for refund of premium under one of the policy
-
Motor Ins urance CLAIMS
 The mos t tangible effect of the general ins urance product is
.
claim s ettlement
 Under the motor ins urance policy mos t of the claims are
aris ing out of vehicular accident and s econdly becaus e of
. .
theft Pure Fire los s es are rare
 All accidents do not res ult in third party claim but there is
.
definitely an own damage claim “Own Damage” means
.
damage to the vehicle ins ured
 Third party claims are handled by the des ignated court
– .
called Motor Accident Claim Tribunal MACT
 The quantum of the own damage claim have to be as s es s ed
and the job is done by the independent s urveyor which in
.
our cas e will be Cunningham Linds ay
 /
Motor claims are reimburs ement bas ed & hence repair & or
the replacement bills are to be collected for the as s es s ed
/ .
los s damage
–
Motor Ins urance Claims
 ,
There are mainly two types of los s es or damages
2. ( )/ ( )
Total Los s TL Cons tructive total los s CTL
3. Partial los s
 Total Los s means either the accidented vehicle is
irreparable or that virtually the economical repair cos t
.
exceeds the IDV of the vehicle
 CTL means that economical repair liability is in exces s of
75% of IDV and cos t of retrieval or repair is factually more
.
expens ive than IDV A comparis on between the repair
/
liability and IDV is neces s arily made to arrive at the TL CTL
liability
 The Partial Los s means the accidental vehicle can be
.
economically repaired
 Surveyor is appointed when the los s is intimated and the
.
es timate of los s is received
–
Motor Ins urance Claims
:
Important points to be kept in mind
 The driver at the material time of accident s hould have an
.
effective driving licens e
 The claimant s hould be the owner of the vehicle or the
authoris ed employee of the company whos e vehicle has
.
met with an accident
 If there is any third party injury or damage then lodging an
.
FIR with Police is mus t
 We pay for the cos t of protection and removal of the vehicle
from the s ite of accident to the place of repair hence the
ins ured s hould act immediately for the minimis ation of
.
los s
 .
In cas e of theft of the vehicle FIR is mus t
