The evolution of management
thought is a process that
started since the early days of
humans. It began since the period we
saw the need to live in groups and
build civilisations. Since civilisation
began, management has been practiced
in one way or the other. Later in the
industrial revolution, which brought
drastic change and suddenly, the need
to develop a more holistic and formal
management theory became a
necessity.
A brief examination of the modern
history will reveal that companies have
been putting different management
theories into practice. Not only have
these helped to increase productivity
but they have also improved the quality
of services. In the 80s, there was an
increase in growth and competitive
level in the global economy, as a result
of convergence of economies, which
shifted focus from traditional
management theories as organisations
became non-restive as they tried to
proffer solution to newer management
issues.
Fast forward to today, a career in
management is increasingly becoming
popular. Big companies are continually
looking for management school
graduates and postgraduates. Hence it
is common for many students to face a
dilemma while choosing the right
program and the right college, as
pursuing a course in management
requires a huge amount of time, money
and energy, and your whole career
depends on it. But if you happen to
enrol in the Suryadatta Institutes of
Management (SIMMC / SIBMT /
SIMMC PGDM), you can rest assured
of receiving a world-class education of
management theories and practices at
one of the top management colleges in
the country.

environment comes within the folds of an educational
institution of higher learnings.
The first question this topic demands is: why is
management education important in the first place?
Looking around you would realize, it’s for the following
reasons that management education becomes a basic
necessity:
- Every aspect of life demands some elements of
management. You can’t escape it.
Enterprise or otherwise, management as a subject is almost
like a life skill that if learnt at the right time, can save life in
multiple ways. Be it a home, an office, a business big or
small, all these require managerial skills and talent to an
extent.
- Leading from the front isn’t an option but a requirement
for everyone.
Management is like the air around us. No entity,
human or otherwise can do without it. In its
absence, all that is left of life is but a few gasps
of air. And then it’s all over.
If you think enterprises take a different route, you could be
in for a shock. In the absence of proper management, the
best of enterprise is worth only a few breaths. It could be a
few more than humans and indicates the relative importance
that’s quite simple but can still take away the life-force of
an enterprise.
Unlike breathing which we learn even before birth as part
of our being a living entity that needs to breathe in order to
survive and function, and strangely in liquids (remember
the foetus is always covered or floating in liquids!),
management in most cases is learnt rather seamlessly
mostly from our predecessors and the environment around
us. In time, predecessors give way to teachers and the

20. be a tough task from the word go. A full simulation with the
use of videos and online means could be a better option.
3. Tackle real-life situations within the confines of a
classroom
Simulation exercises have an element of over-kill given that
they are invariably undertaken for projects with immense
significance, some of which could either be completely new
or things that doesn’t come about often. For mundane
exercises like how to get more leads, more onboarding,
better customer-service and retention etc, managerial
education in a classroom with live cases could be best for
enhanced managerial education. These could include
assistance in tele-calling, convincing, upselling and cross-
selling of products and services, and can have all the
advantages of live, on-the-job training.
4. Take up flipped and double-flipped classrooms
One of the best means of teaching these days is the open-
book flipped and double-flipped classroom. In the former, a
question is put forth to the student/ participant who is
expected to do all the possible study, both within the class
and at home and come back with comprehensive answers
that look at the problem from all angles. A further addition
to this already-unique system of managerial education is the
double-flip where the teacher is taken to be a complete
novice with the student doing the entire exercise of
understanding the topic and coming ready for a detailed
presentation to the teacher and others who could ask
questions, present arguments or even outright reject the idea
as being unfeasible.
5. Industry and field trips + lengthy videos of how
industries do what they do!
Education in certain cases is best at site i.e., completely
outside the purview of the classroom. Engineering of large
objects like boilers and other fabrications is one such
example. To enhance one’s knowledge, managerial or
otherwise, an institution can either make plans for students
to visit the right places or create elaborate videos taking
into account every important aspect of working of the
industry and the activity. The latter could be quite a task
and may call for dedicated resources including money but
stands to give students the right education once
accomplished the right way besides being a lifelong asset
for the creators.
These are but some of the innovative means to impart
management-related education in the classroom. Time,
needs and circumstances are sure to add and change this
list.
Besides the fact that management is ubiquitous, in most
cases, it has to be engaged with while being on the front-
foot (taking a term from cricket!). That said, there are those
who play defensive either out of nature or choice. That said,
there are times when coming to the fore is the only option,
and those with the right training at the right time stand a
higher chance to succeed.
- Management being a holistic science, it helps learn the
same for the sale of the overall health of organizations.
Management may come to us as a survival tool due to a
degree of animal instincts in us. But for the overall
development of the organization, it makes sense to learn it
in a more organized manner at the hands of specialists and
teachers who know exactly what they speak about, and
where best to use it.
We now come to the main part of this article. How do you
enhance management education in the classroom?
Experience like always, has shown us the way!
1. Get hold of industry experts:
Be it HR, Finance, Logistics or Production, what books
teach you may not be the exact same that one encounters in
the real world. That being so, management education in the
classroom scenario does get a shot in the arm if and when
an industry veteran is brought and placed to teach and hone
the finer points of a subject. This is especially true in
industries where the human element is strong including
human resources, training, logistics and supply chain.
2. Go for simulation-based education within the confines
of a classroom
Let’s take the case of the supply chain to explain this point.
Like the best of chains, a well-endowed and provided-for
logistics supply chain is bound to have its share of weak
and very weak links. One of the best ways to enhance
managerial education in a classroom set-up without
stepping out would be to simulate a series of likely
scenarios that may take place with one’s existing resources
and conditions. Keeping it as close to reality as possible,
managerial participants can go on to decipher and record
solutions, ways and means to address the problem including
in some cases taking an altogether different approach. For
example, take the case of equipment that may have to be
sent deep inland through high mountains. Roads being
treacherous in mountains, simulation-based management
education can stress on the use of air, including helicopters
and these days, even airships in certain cases, or barges
upstream on rivers. Trying to learn everything onsite could

ver the last few decades, the
Odevelopment of professional
competencies has come into
sharp focus in higher education. As
emphasized by industry experts, the
level of academic proficiency does not
always correspond to capabilities for
operational tasks in industry. But the
tasks are well achieved by the
professional competencies developed
and the industry exposure received as
part of the course curriculum.
The students should be able to plan
activities, set goals, make decisions,
but this is impossible without
inculcating the concept of self-
organization and independent learning.
Creative and independent learning,
which involves implementation of a
skill-based approach and components
such as individualized approach,
subject interaction, and activity-based
approach are one of the many
solutions. In addition, creative abilities
and competencies of the graduates are
in demand for today’s international

27. The present Covid -19 pandemic, has a very severe
impact on long-term social and economic
consequences. Looking into some of the statistical
data-driven surveys, it is seen that the world’s poorest
countries have opted to close schools, both with reference
to normal children and more so to disadvantaged children.
It is always seen that when there is an utmost necessity to
create new alternative methods to tackle any challenges, we
as human beings have tremendous ability to adapt and
invent. The prolonged closure of schools due to the Covid-
19 has resulted in making life manageable with trial and
error in “Embracing the Technology” to its best. All the
stakeholders, who could afford this kind of online learning
environment with sound financial facilities to invest in
gadgets and tools are still managing well with technology
support and understanding the SAMR model to the best of
one’s abilities.
Now, this pandemic prevailing for more than one and a half
years has taught many of us to get used to the demands of
staying connected virtually. In a country like India, there
are several issues to be addressed:
Food For Thought
With
reference to
providing ‘inclusive
education’
Free

1. 2. 3.
Need for

6. 7. 8.
For a country like ours, especially with a huge population, it
becomes essential to see both the pros and cons of the rise
in the online education system. Very clearly the rural-urban
divide is very long and broad in our country. “This brings in
a stigma attached to the online learning that many children
go without education and resort to daily wages, to help
acquire the requirements for a minimal livelihood.”
However, the huge impact created by many socio-economic
factors can also be positively looked at.
There are potential opportunities to utilize this crisis, to
‘Create Opportunities for Virtual Integration and
Development’ (COVID).
Let us look at some of the basic areas where there can be
potential improvement:
I. Improving Curricula
And the four trends identified are -
1. Competency-based logic
2. Socio-constructivist perspective
3. Increased focus on learners
4. More emphasis on authentic learning situations
There is always a greater possibility for a significant
disconnection between the above-prescribed curricula and
classroom reality (Ref: The Council of Ministers of
Education, in Canada)
II. How to prioritize and create learning opportunities
for authentic learning
This pandemic has made us all reflect on one question and
that is “How to decide on the necessity, importance, and
usefulness of choosing a certain curriculum content?” A
major factor to be considered under authentic learning even
before choosing the content of a curriculum, it becomes
imperative to preserve students’ readiness level to learn
even in a remote manner.
To develop, maintain and celebrate the bonding of students
with teachers and schools during this mode of online
learning pattern becomes very challenging and takes the
utmost priority even more than the transfer of knowledge. It
becomes the responsibility of all the stakeholders to
understand the importance of preserving students’
motivation, engagement and interest while staying
connected to school, especially when the schools are closed
for more than one year.
www.theknowledgereview.com | 25 | August 2021
28. Then comes choosing varied, flexible, and authentic
learning activities, an activity which is comfortable doing
even in an online environment. Teachers need to become
“Agile Thinkers”, to use available minimum tools and apps
and make themselves efficient online teachers. Teachers can
refer to the UN’s 2030 agenda-Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) to create authentic and contextualized
learning situations. UNESCO Chair in Curriculum
Development suggests many ways as means to achieve this.
By placing students at the centre of their learning, there is a
need to draw on various internal and external resources, that
would result in contextualizing the students’ return to
school and the connection can be drawn faster when they
return to school after a long gap.
III. Maximizing the use of learning outside the
classroom
It has been and is being witnessed by all of us that this
Covid-19 crisis, has shown us great pathways to stay
virtually connected and still take care of one’s well-being
and continue learning through distance education. Even
while preparing to get back to hybrid learning, blended
learning, flipped learning, etc., it is going to pose a big
challenge to follow the standard. Operational procedures
like reduced class size, spacing out desk spaces between
students preferring to take outdoor class, etc. Outside the
classroom initiatives, outdoor learning and in-classroom
learning experience have to be complementary and
supplementary.
IV. Self-paced and independent learning
The facilities with many learning platforms, apps, and tools,
interspersed with a clear implementation of the SAMR
model, has provided plenty of opportunities for self-paced,
individualized learning – this is a great boon to address
differentiation too. With the available tools, skills, and
attitude the learning can be as fun-filled as possible without
compromising on the final outcomes and standards to be
achieved.
Students learn:
Ÿ To organize their work better
Ÿ Take more initiative
Ÿ Think more critically
Ÿ Become more involved, and
Ÿ Responsible
Teachers can try out learner-centred teaching models with
ways and means to suit the individual learner needs, their
ability to seek information and analyse and solve problems
in practical and innovative ways.
V. This leads to equipping teachers with digital skills
How to enhance the Digital Literacy skills among teachers?
There are many online courses Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOCs) on distance and online education. This is
made available by many universities and even in India,
teaching platforms like Swayam and Diksha provide such
opportunities to adapt and enhance digital literary skills.
Many students also cannot handle technologies alone.
(Especially the children from Pre-primary and Primary
levels). For example, the Universitie’ de Quebec ‘a
Montreal (UQAM) developed several training modules on
its Carrefour technopědagogique platform to help teachers
adapt to the lockdown.
How do we remove the stigma attached to such a
phenomenal growth of online teaching patterns? This
pandemic has taught all the stakeholders in the field of
education to take challenges and convert them into
educational opportunities, for learning progression. There is
also a constant doubt prevailing over a healthy teacher-
student relationship. If one has to remove the entire stigma
attached to the increased online learning scenario, one
needs to ensure that we embrace such a traumatizing
situation with a deeper understanding of the above-
mentioned opportunities to provide better supportive roles
as teachers, parents and organizations.
It is the question of adjustment and adaptation, fulfilling
roles and responsibilities as an educator to become better
facilitators to prove that there is always a beautiful butterfly
fluttering after a hard transformation.
Let us jointly create opportunities for virtual integration and
development and try to minimize the rural-urban divide by
all means to achieve some of the SDGs of UNESCO.

35. Focal Point
1. Communicate warmth and a sense of purpose
A learning environment should have a sense of happiness,
humour, honesty and most of all, humility to learn. With
any of these missing, the learning environment becomes a
drag which starts to grate the patience of both the learner
and the teacher. While it may take time to come
successfully on top with experience, there are a few things
in people’s born and learnt qualities that help make the
environment warm and purposeful. Of these, the following
remain pertinent:
- Patience. Students, irrespective of age come with
baggage that may be inimical to learning. With patience,
the teacher and the environment can get students to keep
their baggage aside and open up to newer possibilities
and work towards making those a reality.
- Making objectives clear. Grey areas remain inimical to
the growth of a learning irrespective of environments
and institutions. One of the best ways to engender the
learning environment is a strange place. Unlike
Aother places including a family, peer groups and
employments where the norm includes two-way
communication with either or both parties having the
responsibility of taking steps for a positive outcome, here
despite the process having equal contribution from both
sides i.e., the student and the teacher, when it comes to
creating the right learning environment, the needle points
firmly at the teacher. And that’s because the student for the
length of the time he or she is in the environment remains a
recipient, and to an extent a mute spectator who is only to
imbibe and learn.
Strategies to Create a Supportive Learning Environment
thus remains the exclusive preserve of the teacher and the
institution, and the mark of a good teacher and learning
environment can be judged by the way they go about setting
the structures that go toward forming a supporting learning
environment. Some of the established strategies that
promote the right learning environment include:
STRATEGIES
to Create a
Supportive
Learning
Environment

36. adhered to in the right spirits, this could open ways to a new
form of teaching called “flipped classrooms” where the
whole idea of educating is flipped. The teacher becomes the
student and the students use all possible resources,
including open books, libraries, real-life experiences and
the likes to come up with answers that the teachers may put
forth. Collaboration, doing projects, moving out, meeting
people, all these engender teaching in ways that remain
with students for the longest of time. A life-changing
experience, it may not be possible for every subject.
Nevertheless, the learning environment ought to incorporate
the same to the extent possible for the long-term good of
students and learners.
5. Take charge of laggards
A learning environment is as successful as its most laggard
of learners. And when the laggards make up the most, the
environment doesn’t have an option but to slow down and
cater to the slowest. While this may seem slowing down the
whole order, in the larger scheme of things, it teaches the
brightest learner an important lesson. That you don’t move
ahead if you have among you those who either pull you
back or don’t let you move ahead. If learning isn’t a race,
teaching and helping laggards could possibly be the best
teacher for the brightest of students. The ancient way of
education worldwide saw to it that everyone moved at the
same pace, which sometimes was the pace of the slowest.
6. Remember, your best efforts will still be offset by
laggards and failures. Don’t take it to heart. Use it to do
better.
And when one is done with formulating strategies for the
creation of a supportive learning environment, it is time to
understand that in every learning order anywhere in the
world, there shall be those who can be counted as the black-
sheep and who despite the best efforts of the environment
and the teachers are destined to go out of the system as
failures. That is nature and one has to live with it without
getting disturbed in any way!
Learning is a never-ending activity. The most learned also
get to learn something new every day. It’s for this reason
that strategies to create a supportive learning environment
can never be a static activity with little change. On the other
hand, to cater to the widest audience of learners, it ought to
remain dynamic that changes and adjusts with times and
circumstances.
right environment is by making objectives clear at the
earliest. That said, it should be done in ways that don’t
overwhelm or scare the learners into submission or leaving.
- Building the confidence in learners that resources exist
to create the right environment. Key result areas and
defining goals can overwhelm a new learner. It’s then
entirely up to an efficient and concerned teacher to
create confidence in learners that they shall never be left
along and that their abilities shall never be found
wanting. On the contrary, the learning environment
should make efforts to take everyone along.
2. Include contemporary topics to gain and retain
interest
Unless the subject itself is history or learnings that
necessitates looking back in time, there shouldn’t be a
reason for the learning environment to teach dated things.
These are times when things and more so technologies go
extinct in the blink of an eye, and one is forced to stay
abreast with the latest so as to stay relevant. It’s for this
reason that a supportive learning environment should aim at
teaching the latest and what’s likely to come up in the near
future. Remaining contemporary is thus an important
requirement to retain a supportive learning environment. In
fact, it could be too much of a coincidence when one sees
that the leading economies of the world invest their time
and efforts in teaching the latest there while leaving just the
needed amounts of efforts on what’s gone in the past.
Dwelling too much in the past is a sure way of creating a
disgruntled, disparate environment that leads its learners
nowhere meaningful.
3. Be realistic about the end-result
Don’t grow apple trees if you desire mangoes. It could be a
sheer waste of time, money, patience and most of all, an
institution’s goodwill. Not all learning environments are
designed to produce the same kind of output. That said,
with a certain clarity of purpose, and understanding of
ground realities, one can produce better than expected
results. This in fact has been a worldwide phenomenon,
especially when one sees poorer nations. They may not
have produced world-class brains. But in some cases, they
have produced adequate numbers of those who know how
to use their brains with a view to bring change that could be
slow but steady.
4. Use important means including flipped classrooms
A teacher should ideally be there to guide and not goad. If
