You can run, you can hide, but you can’t escape the digital
workplace. However, unlike those scary movies we prefer to
watch with one eye closed, the digital workplace is nothing to
fear. In fact, many experts believe that the digital workplace
only makes workers more produc)ve and eﬃcient. We asked
Fernando Chiquiza Ramos, expert of collabora)on and
produc)vity, for his thoughts on the latest trends.

some way. If all the equipment relates to the eﬃciency of soWware

The digital workplace isn’t merely about
technological change. That’s part of it, of course, but for
Ramos, just as signiﬁcant are the cultural dimensions. This oWen overlooked
aspect of the digital workplace can be understood in two ways.

First, the culture of the companies themselves change, as they increasingly
appreciate the value of digital technology. Historically, companies viewed
technology as an expense. Today, Ramos believes that they are star)ng to
change their perspec)ve and invest in technology that makes room for more
collabora)on and communica)on between team members. This creates a
workplace that is less top-down and more democra)c.

Second, collabora)on is more global, as companies are able to communicate
with people in diﬀerent countries. Ramos calls this the “global tendency” of
the digital workplace. Geographic barriers and )me zones lose meaning, as
the input of digital workers across the globe gains ground in decision-
making. This transforma)on creates a workplace that is less hegemonic and
more culturally diverse.
