Mood Board
This is an analysis of my mood board which I will be using as a visual aid throughout the process of
planning shots and scenes further into the construction of my music video for ‘Nightcall’. I split the
board into four quadrants, as I believed that this would allow the viewer to see each image more
clearly, and would also allow me to go into greater depth per slide.
The Board Itself
This is a full view of my mood
board. For the mood board, I
primarily used my own images,
as I felt that this would serve to
be a more accurate
representation of my own
ability.
Quadrant One
This is the first ‘quadrant’ of my mood
board, with the three horizontal images
each sharing a theme of light within
them. The image furthest to the right is
taken from the film ‘Drive’, in which my
track Nightcall is featured. With the
contrasting levels of light within my
video being used as a narrative device,
I included images such as these in
order to reflect how varying levels of
light can affect mood and tone. For
example, the image to the top left is
very dark, and gives little detail to the
silhouetted figure present in it. This
provokes a sense of mystery to the
viewer, as they are unable to make out
distinct features of the observant
character.
Quadrant Two
I chose these images to depict what I
would like my nighttime scenes to
resemble in my music video. The
images towards the right are taken
from the videos for ‘Somebody Else’
and ‘The Sound’, each by The 1975.
The image at the top was chosen for its
composition, with the silhouetted figure
being positioned in the exact centre of
the screen, seeming almost foreign to
the surrounding environment. The
image from ‘The Sound’ was chosen
for the use of harsh, bold light – as this
is how I would like my phone booth
scenes to appear like. The use of light
acts as an immediate focal point for the
audience, giving connotations of a
lighthouse in a dark, gloomy
background.
Quadrant Three
These four images were chosen to reflect
the use of colour I may implement into
my video. Whilst this was not part of my
initial plan, I believe that, if possible, I
will try to include bright, neon colours –
primarily in the nighttime scenes, as the
contrast would be more apparent to the
audience. This would be achieved
through the use of lens gels and neon
lighting, both of which should be
available to me when filming. Whilst this
would not be crucial for my video, I
believe it would help to solidify my video
as part of the ‘Synthwave’ genre, as the
use of neon is a frequent occurrence in
synthwave videos (as mentioned by my
genre research post)
Quadrant Three
These images in quadrant four
were included in order to
demonstrate the naturalistic
imagery that will feature heavily
in the daytime scenes. Images
such as these will act as
transitional shots – allowing the
audience to realise that the
scene has changed, and that it
now takes place in a different
environment. The image of the
blue sky for example,
immediately informs the viewer
that the scene takes place in the
day, therefore indicating an
ellipsis of time.
Summary
By creating this mood board I have improved my understanding of what my video will hopefully
resemble. I believe I am now more prepared to begin filming my music video, as I will be able to
reference my own images when framing and filming shots and scenes. Given that many of the images
present on the mood board were taken in my filming locations, I think I have a good knowledge of how
to construct shots in these environments, as I will be familiar with the features and appearance of the
surrounding area(s).
