1. Treatment Sheet (Camera, Lighting, Performance and Narrative)
Overview
This song is fairly fast paced with heavy guitars and drums used within. This
is the main element I would like to compliment and show off within our music
video, this has allowed me to look at their past performances analytically and
extensively to understand how they act on stage and to grasp that element of
the song.
The lighting and the use of the stage with the camera is a very helpful part of
this to show the conventions off to the audience and to show off our skills well
enough to the audience.
Performance
As the band would be expected to be shown on stage, I would use various
close ups and long shots to show off the stage size and the bands presence
on stage. This would show off the band and give them some attitude on stage
that other bands can compare themselves to. They would have to look
energetic and into the music because otherwise, things would look rather
unappealing with the genre and style of music playing. This would have to be
shown by contrasting light and various different locations used such as a gig,
an empty hall, dark room, performance in the street and the different locations
according to the narrative of the performance and lyrics.

We can see that they have got amazing presence on stage and attract the
audience’s attention amazingly. This use of presence and audience attention
would be great to use in the music promo video and to re-create that effect
would look spectacular. To do this I would start the camera looking down at
the snare drum as that is what we hear starting the song, then as the song
goes on the camera keeps switching between the stage and the crowd
coming in, also when the whole band enter the song, the stage will light up
and then we have the crowd scream and jump around in excitement as they
see the band. Then the music video will continue from there.

2. Lighting
Using a various amount of Dark and Bright lighting is often used within these
style of video’s yet I would like to vary this a little bit mainly so I can maximize
our audience because if we had flashing lights/photography and kept
switching between the Dark and Bright lighting, people with epilepsy and
people who are photosensitive may be unable to watch the video and
therefore we will lose out n our audience revenue slightly.
For example, at the beginning I would use a dark camera filter to show the
image in a grey-scale (black and white) format at first then I will change to
regular lighting that shows the band on stage to be big and exciting whilst also
slightly showing off the crowd to make the performance and music seem more
exciting. This will adhere to conventions of the genre whilst keeping the
lighting simple and help show off its effectiveness.

3. Camera
With the shot of the snare drum at the beginning I would like to use the shot of
the crowd in a slow motion blurry state to show off the crowd but adhere to the
conventions of the genre. Her is an example of what I would like to do:

With the main stage cameras I would like to use them to gain focus shots of
the band and also to use them to gain good quality video’s of the band and
their own instruments. With the handheld cameras we would like to use them
to gain various shots of looking down their instruments and up from their
pedals and so on to give a different perspective of the band on stage. Also, I
would like to use the handheld ones to gain raw, sketchy footage of the band
from the crowd’s point of view as then I would be able to give the music video
a “hand-made” and authentic feel to it and to allow the fans to be able to
relate to the performance.
I would also use the different stage cameras to film the narrative as then
during the editing process I could alter the images and footage to look a little
more sketchy but it has to be in good quality so that the audience can
understand and view it effectively.
I would also like to use the effect of slow motion to adhere to Andrew
Goodwin’s theory of the Star Image that the band are often the most viewed
element of a music video. This would also emphasize the bands presence on
stage to use within the music video and to allow the audience to become
more familiar with the band members themselves and their image.

4. Narrative
Through looking at the lyrics and our lyrics breakdown, we have decided that
we would like to use various images of a run-down neighborhood and the
images of the people in their own homes. This would be staged so as to not
invade people’s privacy and then we don’t have to go through the arguments
and ask for permission if we can use resources already available to us. This
would also help us by looking at the theory that the lyrics display loneliness
and various different thoughts that people are isolated and on their own.
This would be done using a variety of techniques and also using the lighting,
camera filters, editing filters and the camera shots to utilize these different
images and thoughts of the audience when watching the video. This has been
seen in the Black Stone Cherry video that I analyzed earlier “Lonely Train”

By looking through this narrative, the song’s lyrics can be shown to the
audience easily and therefore can be explained from our point of view. This
can help as the audience may be able to relate to the images and lyrics
presented within this music video, unfortunately the audience may have a
different idea and representation of what the lyrics could mean to them which
therefore may present problems to them as they may stop watching. To avoid
this as much as we could, we have taken samples of ideas from peoples
thoughts on the video and then compared them to our literal translations of
the lyrics and tried to come up with some ideas of how we could film them and
present them to the audience clearly.
