This document discusses Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). It begins with providing background on MOOCs, noting that they aim for unlimited participation through open access online and are free with unlimited enrollment. It describes key characteristics of MOOCs like large scale, no formal entry requirements, learner-centered approach, and high dropout rates. A brief history of MOOCs is then given, from early open education movements to the first MOOCs on platforms like Coursera and Udacity in 2012.
How can audience research help us design better products?100 Shapes
Understanding audiences is fundamental to user experience design and to any user-centred design process. But how do we put this into practice?
For an existing product or service there may be a wealth of user insights and feedback, but for a new product, formal audience research is invaluable.
Audience research is different from usability research in that it examines users’ behaviours and motivations rather than their usage of a particular product, although both are necessary for a user-centred design process.
Audience research for UX is also different from market research - it is not concerned with market size, pricing or how to market a particular product idea. Instead it helps us identify the problems that users are trying to solve in their lives in order that we might use design to solve them in new better ways.
This presentation explores how audience research can help us design better products.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

4. What are MOOCs?
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a
fresh innovation in educational development.
They have attracted great interest in the higher
education community.
MOOCs are aimed at unlimited participation
and open access via the web
Not only are they free, they offer essentially
unlimited enrollment to anyone interested.
Based on Stephen Downes’ connectivist theory,
MOOCs feature three aspects: open content,
open instruction, and open assessment
5. Characteristics of MOOCs
Scale of numbers – no participation limit
No formal entry requirement
Virtual Learning Environment is not the centre of the course
Use a variety of (new) social media and online tools
Learner-centred
Increased student participation and self-direction
Facilitators create the environment not way of learning
Scattered chaos
High drop out rate
Can be Community of Practice

8. My Field of Study
My field of study is English and what interests me the most in the English
language is Literature and Grammar.
I am mostly interested in British Literature as I believe it gives insight to
its readers as far as humans and human life in general is concerned.
The British literature is remarkable in its use of language which make
one not to see things on a surface level but requires them to look for a
deeper meaning that one can find as they read.
Not only that, the other reason I am interested in English literature is that
it creates critical thinkers and reflective individuals who are cautious
and thoughtful of the things they do and/or say.
9. English literature
is the literature which is
distinctly written in the English
language, as opposed to
differing languages. English
literature includes literature
composed in English by
writers not necessarily from
England nor primarily English-
10. Until the early 19th century, this
article deals with literature from
Britain written in English; then
America starts to produce major
writers and works in literature. In
the 20th century America and
Ireland produced many of the
most significant works of literature
in English, and after World War II
writers from the former British
Empire also began to challenge
writers from Britain.
11. The value of literature
It is a curious and prevalent opinion that literature, like all art, is a mere play of
imagination, pleasing enough, like a new novel, but without any serious or
practical importance. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Literature preserves
the ideals of a people; and ideals--love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom,
reverence--are the part of human life most worthy of preservation.
The Greeks were a marvelous people; yet of all their mighty works we cherish only
a few ideals,--ideals of beauty in perishable stone, and ideals of truth in
imperishable prose and poetry. It was simply the ideals of the Greeks and Hebrews
and Romans, preserved in their literature, which made them what they were, and
which determined their value to future generations. Our democracy, the boast of
all English-speaking nations, is a dream; not the doubtful and sometimes
disheartening spectacle presented in our legislative halls, but the lovely and
immortal ideal of a free and equal manhood, preserved as a most precious
heritage in every great literature from the Greeks to the Anglo-Saxons.
All our arts, our sciences, even our inventions are founded squarely upon ideals;
for under every invention is still the dream of Beowulf, that man may overcome
the forces of nature; and the foundation of all our sciences and discoveries is the
immortal dream that men "shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
12. The value of literature cont.
In a word, our whole civilization, our freedom, our progress, our
homes, our religion, rest solidly upon ideals for their foundation.
Nothing but an ideal ever endures upon earth. It is therefore
impossible to overestimate the practical importance of literature,
which preserves these ideals from fathers to sons, while men, cities,
governments, civilizations, vanish from the face of the earth.
It is only when we remember this that we appreciate the action of
the devout Mussulman, who picks up and carefully preserves every
scrap of paper on which words are written, because the scrap may
perchance contain the name of Allah, and the ideal is too
enormously important to be neglected or lost.
