2. BRIEF OVERVIEW AND PLOT
‘Monsters’ is a 2010 British Science Fiction film written and
directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by Allan Niblo, and
James Richardson
Monsters premiered at South by Southwest on 13th March
2010. It had released in North America, beginning on 29th
October 2010, follow by a theoretical release in the United
Kingdom on 3rd December 2010. The running time was 94
minutes, followed by the budget of $500,000, Box office: $4.2
million.
The main plot is After a NASA deep-space probe crash lands
in Mexico, life forms spread throughout the Mexico-United states
boarder, leading to the quarantine of the northern half of Mexico.
US and Mexican troops battle to contain the creatures, and a
huge wall stretching along the border ostensibly keeps the US
protected.
3. FINANCE
The overall budget for the making of the film ‘Monsters’ was $500,000. The producers pitched how much
they would need for the film to a bank and got the money from there, the bank wanted 50% bonus back
plus 5% from the producers profits. They then worked out a prediction on how much money they would
need, which is the budget, that was scaled in to $500,000. this should cover all the costs of developing
the film from start to end. They made 5 times more in the box office than what it cost to make, bringing in
a massive amount of $4.2 million. Gareth Edwards took a loan out from the bank, he admits that this
was a risk for him because the film might get hi in debt, and he may lose money and he would have to
pay the bank back in interest which was costing him more money and cutting more into his profit that
he’d made from the film; all though he was making money form the film, having to pay the bank back
form the money he had borrowed will have cost him a lot more money than he actually borrowed in the
first place.
4. LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS SUCH AS
DEADLINES AND RECOURSES
Filming took place in 5 countries and many locations were used without permission, this way they had no
waiting to use the locations. Men of the extras were people that lived in those countries so they didn't’t
have to pay them any amounts of money.
Photography lasted 5 weeks, and it only had a crew of 6 people for producers.
The overall making of the film was from December to May, which is 6 months. They only filmed for 3 weeks
and the only reason it took them this small amount of time was because they didn’t have permission to use
any locations otherwise it would have taken so much longer. They filmed in Belize, Mexico, Guatemala,
Costa Rica, and the US and they didn’t pay to film in any of these locations, meaning they didn't’t have to
wait so they could get filming straight away and this saved a lot of time. Another reason is that it would
have taken a lot longer and this meant that they saved a lot of time, They planned to spend most of the
money on location, this is because without these important locations that they filmed in the film might not
have been as successful which is why I think not getting permission to film in these locations was a good
effective choice, however they could have also cut down on the amount of locations they used and only
used the locations that were necessary.
5. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
Film censorship is carried out by various countries to differing degrees, films are
regulated to decide what age the viewers should be to be able to watch the film and to
make sure it’s appropriate for certain audiences. Film and video releases in Britain are
amongst the most tightly-regulated in the western world. The film monsters was
certified as a 12 rating. BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification.
Health and safety regulations also comes across as stunt doubles, and stunt moves
through out the filming production.
I think making the film restricted for 12 year olds and plus reliable because because it
does contain some disturbing scenes, which might not be viewable for any younger
audiences.
6. PLANNING OF EDITING
Gareth Edwards who is the Director of the film, ‘Monsters 2010’ edited the
on screen filming in his own bedroom using off-the-shelf Adobe Software,
Zbrush, and Autodesk 3d’s max. He had 5 months to create all 250 shots,
he managed to produce 2 shots a day until he reached the first creature
shot, when suddenly two months went by and he still didn’t finish a single
creature shot.
